For a 2024 action watchlist, start with Dune: Part Two, then choose among six films whose styles range from martial-arts intensity to stunt-driven comedy and disaster spectacle. This is an editorial ranking, not a definitive industry consensus: Rotten Tomatoes named Dune: Part Two its Best Movie of 2024, while Monkey Man won its Best Action & Adventure category. Those awards help frame the picks, but they do not determine this order.
How this ranking works
The order weighs how central the action is, the inventiveness of the set pieces, storytelling clarity and momentum, stylistic identity, and available awards recognition. Those are editorial criteria, not measured scores. Rotten Tomatoes says its 2024 movie rankings reflect Tomatometer and Popcornmeter scores as of December 31, 2024, and that its awards winners and nominees use an adjusted formula that accounts for differences in review counts. That methodology is a useful cross-check, not a definitive measure of action-film quality. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 Golden Tomato Awards named Dune: Part Two Best Movie and Monkey Man Best Action & Adventure.

The 7 best action movies of 2024
1. Dune: Part Two
Denis Villeneuve’s science-fiction epic is the strongest overall pick for viewers who want action on an expansive scale. Its placement also has a notable awards signal: Rotten Tomatoes named it Best Movie of 2024. That award is not action-specific, but it supports its standing as one of the year’s most prominent films.
2. Monkey Man
For a more physically grounded action choice, put Monkey Man near the top of the list. It won Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 Best Action & Adventure category, the clearest genre-specific recognition among these seven. The award does not make it an objective number two, but it makes the film an especially strong starting point for viewers prioritizing action.

3. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Furiosa is the franchise-scale option in this lineup. Rotten Tomatoes nominated it for both Best Movie and Best Wide Release, recognition that places it among the year’s prominent theatrical releases. Those nominations do not establish an exact rank, so its position here reflects this list’s editorial balance rather than an awards result.
4. The Fall Guy
Ryan Gosling plays stuntman Colt Seavers, who returns to a film set and gets pulled into a conspiracy after the movie’s star goes missing. The premise makes The Fall Guy a natural choice for viewers who want action alongside comedy and a film-industry setting. Rotten Tomatoes nominated it for Best Action & Adventure. Universal lists the 2024 film as PG-13 with a runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes. Universal Pictures At Home lists 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions, including a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital edition.
5. Rebel Ridge
Rebel Ridge gives this list a streaming-film pick alongside its theatrical releases. Rotten Tomatoes included it among both its Best Action & Adventure nominees and its Best Streaming Movies nominees for 2024. Those nominations establish recognition in both categories, but do not by themselves settle how it compares with the films above.
6. Deadpool & Wolverine
Choose Deadpool & Wolverine for a superhero entry with broad fan recognition. Rotten Tomatoes nominated it for Best Action & Adventure and Fan Favorite Movies. The awards are a useful indicator of visibility and audience appeal, rather than a direct measure of action choreography or storytelling quality.

7. Twisters
Twisters rounds out the list as a large-scale disaster-action option. It received Rotten Tomatoes nominations for Best Action & Adventure and Fan Favorite Movies. Its inclusion broadens the lineup beyond superhero and franchise combat films, while the nomination signals recognition in the year’s action category.
