A Christmas Story is set in Indiana, but it was filmed in Ohio and Canada. The 1983 comedy also draws on writer Jean Shepherd’s own literary work—and Shepherd himself provides the adult Ralphie’s voice. Here are six documented details about the film, from its source book to its homemade-looking holiday effects.

1. The story is set in Indiana, but filming took place elsewhere

Ralphie’s story unfolds in an Indiana town, yet the production locations were in Ohio and Canada. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) reports that the film was shot in Cleveland, Ohio, and Toronto. The American Film Institute (AFI) catalog also lists St. Catharines, Ontario, among the production’s geographic locations.

The NEA’s 2021 account names Cleveland and Toronto; AFI’s catalog record includes all three cities.

2. Jean Shepherd’s book supplied the literary roots

The film draws on Shepherd’s writing, rather than being an entirely invented holiday story. AFI identifies his 1966 book In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash as the source. The NEA describes the film as based on Shepherd’s own life and points to that book as the place where he chronicles it.

That connection makes the film a meeting of two forms: Shepherd’s stories and recollections, adapted into a feature screenplay by Shepherd, Leigh Brown, and director Bob Clark. Turner Classic Movies lists the screenplay credits.

3. Shepherd is also the voice of adult Ralphie

Shepherd does not appear only behind the story. AFI notes that he is heard intermittently as the voice of adult Ralphie, who narrates memories of his childhood. The voice links the grown narrator to the writer whose work inspired the film.

4. The snow was made for the production

The wintry setting did not rely entirely on natural snowfall. In its December 17, 2021 article, the NEA reports that the film’s snow was artificial, made from soap and foam. That practical-effects detail is reported by the NEA; it is not an AFI catalog specification.

5. The soap in the infamous gag was a prop

The NEA also reports that the Lifebuoy soap used in the film was a wax mold. The gag’s memorable bar, then, was a prop rather than ordinary soap used as-is.

6. Ralphie’s wish has a very specific name

Ralphie’s coveted present is identified in the dialogue as an “official Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle!” AFI records that wording in its catalog. It is the film’s phrasing of Ralphie’s request, not confirmation that a retail product with that exact name or specification was sold.
