These six series put grief, trauma, tragedy or emotional upheaval near the center of the experience—not just in one sad scene. The ranking weighs how persistent and intense that feeling is, and how much consolation or hope the story offers. It is an editorial judgment, not a measurable sadness score: the available descriptions do not compare the shows on a shared scale. The evidence supports six entries, not a defensible top ten, so this list does not pad itself with unverified picks. No major plot outcomes are discussed.
How the ranking works
Sadness takes different forms across these shows. Some focus on grief and recovery; others on trauma, historical tragedy or the damage a crisis causes to a family. The order below reflects three questions: what kind of sadness the series explores, how sustained and intense it is, and whether it makes room for hope or relief. The descriptions cited here support those distinctions, but they do not establish a universal ranking.

The saddest shows of the 2020s
1. Baby Reindeer
Baby Reindeer is a particularly intense, emotionally complex watch. Netflix describes the series as drawing on creator Richard Gadd’s real-life experiences and autobiographical one-man show; that origin helps explain why its difficult material can feel so exposed. Rotten Tomatoes has called it a “punishing watch.” That is a critical description, not a promise that every viewer will respond alike. Netflix Tudum’s series guide provides the autobiographical context, while Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 TV guide characterizes its emotional complexity.
2. Expats
Among the shows here, Expats is the starkest fit for emotional devastation without much warmth to soften the experience. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 critics’ consensus describes the limited series as “emotionally devastating and icy.” The pairing matters: this is not simply a tragedy framed to offer easy comfort. The description supports its place high on a list about difficult viewing, but it does not prove it is the saddest series of the decade. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 TV guide.

3. Adolescence
Adolescence centers on the devastating effects of a crisis on a boy’s family and community. Netflix’s description calls the limited series absorbing and devastating, making its emotional reach broader than one character’s suffering. Its single-take production is a documented formal choice, but technique alone is not a measure of sadness; the reason it belongs here is the story’s impact on those around the boy. Netflix frames it as a 2025 limited series. Netflix Tudum’s 2025 season-finale guide describes its emotional stakes, and Netflix Tudum’s series guide covers the show.
4. We Were the Lucky Ones
This limited series is described by Rotten Tomatoes as both “harrowing and life-affirming.” That combination places its sadness in a different register from Expats: the historical tragedy is central, while perseverance remains part of the emotional picture. Hope does not erase suffering, but it changes the texture of the viewing experience. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 TV guide.

5. Somebody Somewhere
Somebody Somewhere is a grief story with room to breathe. The Atlantic describes Sam returning home to care for her dying sister, becoming mired in grief, and finding unexpected solace in her small-town community. That movement from loss toward friendship and rebuilding keeps the series from being unbroken misery, but does not make its grief less central. It ranks below the more punishing entries because consolation is part of its emotional design. The Atlantic’s 2024 television list.
6. Shōgun
Shōgun is a historical epic with intimate emotional arcs, rather than a series built around unrelenting sadness. The Atlantic’s discussion of the 2024 FX drama supports its inclusion for those personal stakes, even though the source does not frame it as a grief-centered show. Its lower placement reflects that distinction: tragedy and emotional intensity are present, but sadness is not the sole lens through which the series works. The Atlantic identifies the adaptation’s source as James Clavell’s 1975 novel, also titled Shōgun; the book is a companion for readers curious about the source material, not a prerequisite for watching. The Atlantic’s 2024 television list.

Which one should you watch if you want a sad series?
For grief complicated by community and recovery, start with Somebody Somewhere. For a harsh, emotionally difficult experience, Baby Reindeer and Expats are the clearest fits in the descriptions cited here. If you want tragedy paired with perseverance, We Were the Lucky Ones offers that balance. These are differences in emotional register, not a guarantee of how any individual viewer will feel.
