There is no single definitive ranking of mecha anime: the genre ranges from military science fiction to psychological drama, political intrigue, comedy, and stories about everyday technology. These six picks are selected for their influence, distinct storytelling, accessibility as starting points, and the different roles their machines play. The order is a practical watchlist, not a quality score.
What mecha anime should you watch first?
Choose by the kind of story you want, not just by the size of the robots. For military science fiction, start with Mobile Suit Gundam; for intense character drama, try Neon Genesis Evangelion; for political maneuvering, pick Code Geass. The remaining shows widen the range with high-energy super-robot spectacle, music and romance, and grounded civic robotics.
| Show | Best fit | How the mecha function | Starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile Suit Gundam | Military science fiction | Weapons within a larger conflict and world | Start with the original Mobile Suit Gundam series for a foundational entry; the franchise has multiple entry points. |
| Neon Genesis Evangelion | Psychological, character-focused drama | Part of a story centered on young pilots’ inner lives | Begin with the TV series. |
| Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion | Political plotting and vengeance | Mecha action within a plot-driven drama | Begin with the original series, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. |
| Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann | Comedy, action, and dramatic escalation | Super-robot spectacle that grows increasingly outsized | Start with the TV series. |
| Macross | Transforming fighters, romance, and music | Variable fighters, known as Valkyries, are central to the action | Try the original Macross TV series as a first entry. |
| Patlabor | Grounded near-future robotics | Robots as civic and workplace technology | Start with the original Patlabor OVA series. |
1. Mobile Suit Gundam: military science fiction with a world beyond the cockpit
Gundam is a foundational choice if you want giant robots to matter as military technology rather than as isolated spectacle. Its mobile suits belong to a wider conflict, with the politics and human cost of war shaping the story around them. The Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Japanese Animation Guide treats Gundam as a major representative of the genre.
It is a franchise, not one continuous series that every newcomer must watch from beginning to end. For a clear first step, choose the original Mobile Suit Gundam TV series; other entries offer separate settings and entry points. This pick suits viewers who want military strategy, factional conflict, and a science-fiction setting that extends beyond the machines.

2. Neon Genesis Evangelion: giant robots and the pilots’ inner lives
Choose Neon Genesis Evangelion if you want the pilots’ psychology to carry as much weight as the battles. Its young characters’ inner lives are central to the story, alongside unusual robot designs, popular characters, and a complex plot. The Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs’ guide notes the series’ continuing influence, while A Kid’s Guide to Anime & Manga highlights its focus on the pilots’ inner lives.
Start with the TV series to follow the original character drama as it unfolds. This is a better fit for viewers interested in pressure, relationships, and psychological tension than for those looking only for straightforward robot action.
3. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: political maneuvering and revenge
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion combines mecha action with a plot about political maneuvering, vengeance, and betrayal. It is a strong choice if you want plans, reversals, and character ambitions to drive the viewing experience. Both A Kid’s Guide to Anime & Manga and Crunchyroll’s beginner guide to mecha anime identify it as a familiar genre title.

4. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: high-energy super-robot spectacle
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is the exuberant option: its robotic comedy has dramatic depth, and its scale and energy make it a natural pick for viewers who enjoy bold escalation. A Kid’s Guide to Anime & Manga describes the series in those broad terms. The official site dates the TV series’ broadcast to April–September 2007 and identifies it as director Hiroyuki Imaishi’s first TV anime series.
Start with the TV series. Its comic, high-energy approach gives it a very different rhythm from the military and psychological dramas elsewhere on this list.

5. Macross: variable fighters, romance, and music
Pick Macross if you want mecha action intertwined with romance and music. The official MACROSS site describes the franchise through the combination of variable fighter mecha called Valkyries, dramatic love triangles, and music—three elements that define its identity rather than sitting at the edges of the story.
Macross spans multiple series, films, and OVAs, so it is useful to name an entry instead of treating the franchise as one long watch. The original Macross TV series is a straightforward starting point if you want to see the foundational mix of transforming fighters, relationships, and songs.

Patlabor offers a more grounded near-future angle: its robots are part of civic and workplace life, giving the series a different scale and rhythm from war epics or stories of ever-growing super-robot spectacle. The Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs includes Patlabor works in its historical survey of Japanese animation.
