56 Days Review: Prime Video’s Thriller Changes the Book’s Best Twist

Prime Video’s 56 Days keeps Catherine Ryan Howard’s central setup—a new couple, a 56-day relationship timeline and a murder investigation—but changes the setting and the ending. Those changes do more than update the story: they alter the pressure that brings Ciara and Oliver together and recast what their relationship means. The series is a slick, bingeable thriller; readers who want the novel’s particular reveal and moral reckoning will find a substantially different story.

What is Prime Video’s 56 Days?

Prime Video lists 56 Days as an eight-episode first season. Its synopsis starts with an unidentified body found in a luxury apartment connected to Oliver Kennedy and Ciara Wyse. Detectives Lee Reardon and Karl Connolly reconstruct the couple’s relationship over the 56 days before the killing. The US listing names Dove Cameron, Avan Jogia and Karla Souza among the cast, with episodes beginning February 17, 2026. Dates and availability can differ by territory; consult the local Prime Video listing.

The adaptation is based on Catherine Ryan Howard’s novel, published in 2021. Blackstone Publishing lists a 320-page edition, though page counts vary across formats. Atlantic Books says the novel won the 2021 An Post Irish Book Award for Crime Fiction. The premise and available formats are described by Blackstone Publishing and Atlantic Books.

How does the series differ from the novel?

Boston replaces lockdown-era Dublin

Howard’s novel opens with Ciara and Oliver meeting in a Dublin supermarket as COVID-19 reaches Ireland. With lockdown approaching, they move in together. The pandemic is not just background: it supplies an external reason for rapid cohabitation and intensifies the couple’s isolation. The series relocates the story to present-day Boston and drops lockdown as a plot point, so the relationship’s compressed timeline no longer has the same historical pressure behind it. The publishers’ novel descriptions establish the Dublin and lockdown premise; TheWrap’s review discusses the screen version’s changed setting.

The investigation-and-romance structure remains

Both versions move between the relationship’s past and the discovery of a body in Oliver’s apartment. The series retains that split timeline, setting the unfolding romance against detectives’ reconstruction of the crime. Prime Video’s press announcement, reproduced by Pressparty, called it a story intercutting “an intense single day in the present investigation” with the lovers’ past; that is promotional framing, not independent criticism. Pressparty reproduces the announcement. TheWrap likewise describes the show’s juxtaposition of the couple’s story and the murder timeline.

The screen version changes the relationship’s resolution

The series does not simply condense the novel’s reveal. It adds Troxler, a character absent from the book, and changes how the final crime is resolved. That is the consequential adaptation choice: the same couple and investigation lead to a different account of what Ciara and Oliver are to one another. The ending details below are spoilers.

Spoilers: what happens at the end of each version?

Spoiler warning: This section reveals the central truth and ending of both the novel and the series.

In the novel, Ciara learns the truth about Oliver and kills him. Its resolution centers on that discovery and the act that follows, turning the relationship’s accumulated secrets into a final rupture. Troxler is not part of Howard’s book.

The series takes a different route. Time reports that it adds Troxler and ends with Oliver and Ciara together after further violence and concealment. Rather than concluding with Ciara’s decisive break from Oliver, the adaptation leaves the pair bound together by what they have done and hidden. Time’s ending analysis details the change.

That is why “loses the book’s best twist” works as a critical judgment, not a neutral description. The novel’s ending makes the revelation reorganize the relationship and end it through violence; the series makes the aftermath of violence part of the couple’s continued bond. It changes not only the final surprise but the moral shape of the story.

Is the series worth watching if you have read the book?

Yes, if you are open to an alternate version rather than a faithful retelling of the book’s final movement. The shared framework—the 56-day relationship, secrets, investigation and shifting timelines—gives the adaptation recognizable DNA. But the move from pandemic-era Dublin to present-day Boston removes one of the novel’s strongest pressures, and the altered ending changes the payoff. Read the novel for its lockdown-driven isolation and sharper final rupture; watch the series for a reworked relationship thriller.
