The 50 most anticipated movies of 2025 were not defined by one official ranking. Audience interest, recognizable franchises, celebrated directors, major stars, literary adaptations, historical subjects, and festival buzz all shaped the conversation. This guide brings those different forms of anticipation together, with the 50-film editorial selection at its center and IMDb’s audience-driven ranking as a useful comparison.
Because the 2025 calendar year is now complete, this is best read as a retrospective of the films people were watching and waiting for during the year—not as a claim about which movies were ultimately the best, most profitable, or most widely seen. Dates below are U.S. theatrical or announced-release context from the original source list. Several projects had no firm date or limited public plot information when that list was compiled.

What counted as an anticipated movie in 2025?
Anticipation is not the same thing as quality, box-office performance, or critical reception. IMDb’s January 2, 2025 list measured repeated page-view behavior among its users, which naturally favored major franchises, familiar characters, and heavily marketed releases. The 50-film selection used for this guide was more editorial: it also included auteur films, festival projects, awards-oriented dramas, adaptations, biographies, and unusual genre movies that had strong interest among cinephiles even when their mass-market visibility was lower.
That difference explains why a broad audience list and a critic- or cinephile-oriented list can look very different while both being reasonable. A film can be highly anticipated because millions of people are checking for information about it, because a major filmmaker has been away for several years, because its source material has a devoted readership, or because its subject matter connects with a larger cultural conversation.

IMDb’s audience snapshot of the 2025 movie calendar
IMDb’s January 2 ranking provides a useful picture of the titles that attracted the strongest page-view interest among its users. It placed Superman first, followed by the following nine films:
| IMDb position | Film |
|---|---|
| 1 | Superman |
| 2 | 28 Years Later |
| 3 | The Fantastic Four: First Steps |
| 4 | How to Train Your Dragon |
| 5 | Thunderbolts! |
| 6 | Captain America: Brave New World |
| 7 | Snow White |
| 8 | Jurassic World: Rebirth |
| 9 | A Minecraft Movie |
| 10 | Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning |
Only some of those titles appear in the 50-film editorial selection. That is not an error; it reflects two different ways of measuring anticipation. The IMDb list leaned toward recognizable intellectual property and large-scale releases, while the broader selection made room for films such as Peter Hujar’s Day, Blue Moon, The History of Sound, and Father, Mother, Sister, Brother.
The 50 most anticipated movies of 2025
The entries below retain the numbering of the 50-film source selection. A listed date should be understood as the U.S. date or release context supplied at the time, not automatically as a worldwide release date or proof of a broad theatrical run.
- 28 Years Later
Danny Boyle returned to the 28 Days Later universe with a story centered on survivors of the Rage virus and the dangers beyond their isolated island. The project combined the pull of an established horror property with Boyle’s return to the world that began with 28 Days Later. The source list gave it a U.S. date of June 20, 2025.

Kogonada’s imaginative drama follows two strangers whose lives become connected through an extraordinary journey. Its appeal came from the director’s distinctive visual reputation and the promise of an emotionally ambitious story built around an unusual connection. The listed U.S. date was May 9, 2025.
- After the Hunt
Luca Guadagnino’s academic drama places a professor between an accusation against a colleague and secrets from her own past. The premise suggested a story about institutional pressure, moral uncertainty, and the ways personal history can complicate a seemingly straightforward allegation. Its director and serious subject matter made it a natural prestige title.
- All-Star Weekend
Jamie Foxx’s comedy follows two friends whose sports loyalties create a rivalry. The film drew anticipation primarily from its high-profile ensemble, including Foxx, Gerard Butler, Robert Downey Jr., and Benicio del Toro. The source list included it without supplying a firm U.S. release date, so it belonged among the year’s anticipated projects rather than a guaranteed calendar release.
- The Alto Knights
Barry Levinson’s crime drama portrays Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, with Robert De Niro playing both central mob figures. That dual performance gave the film a clear hook, while its subject placed it within the continuing audience for organized-crime history and American gangster dramas. The listed U.S. date was March 21, 2025.

Michel Gondry’s musical was inspired by Pharrell Williams’ childhood in Virginia Beach. The combination of a celebrated visual filmmaker, a music-centered story, and a real-life cultural figure made it one of the more distinctive projects on the list. The source supplied May 9, 2025 as its U.S. date.
- Black Bag
Steven Soderbergh’s espionage thriller focuses on a married pair of intelligence agents whose loyalties become divided. The central relationship gives the spy genre a domestic and psychological angle: the danger is not only what the agents know, but whether they can trust the person closest to them. Its listed U.S. date was March 14, 2025.
- Blue Moon
Richard Linklater’s biographical musical drama centers on composer and lyricist Lorenz Hart. Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley were among the principal cast, adding star appeal to a project rooted in American musical and theater history. It was particularly attractive to viewers interested in artist biographies rather than conventional music-industry spectacle.
- Bugonia
Yorgos Lanthimos’ conspiracy comedy follows two men who kidnap a corporate executive because they believe she is an alien. The premise combines paranoia, absurdity, and social satire in a way strongly associated with Lanthimos’ filmmaking. The listed U.S. date was November 7, 2025.

Lynne Ramsay’s psychologically intense rural drama follows a mother struggling with psychosis. Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson lead the film, which was anticipated as a difficult, performance-driven work rather than an easy genre watch. Its subject suggested an examination of isolation, mental illness, parenthood, and the fragility of domestic life.
- Eddington
Ari Aster’s darkly comic pandemic-era story is set in a small New Mexico town. Its ensemble included Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone. The setting made the film a potentially sharp examination of the social tensions and political divisions associated with the pandemic period, while Aster’s name brought substantial genre and auteur interest.

- F1
Joseph Kosinski’s motorsport drama follows a retired Formula One driver who returns to mentor a younger teammate. The film was aimed at the intersection of sports drama and large-format spectacle, with racing providing a natural theatrical draw. The listed U.S. date was June 27, 2025.
- Father, Mother, Sister, Brother
Jim Jarmusch’s family drama follows estranged siblings confronting unresolved tensions with their parents. Its anticipation came from Jarmusch’s long-standing reputation for independent filmmaking and the promise of a carefully observed family story. The project was among the more intimate titles on a list otherwise crowded with action, horror, and franchise films.

Guillermo del Toro’s personal adaptation of the Frankenstein myth features Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Ralph Ineson, and Christoph Waltz. The combination of a filmmaker closely associated with monsters and fairy-tale imagery and one of literature’s most enduring creations made this a major auteur event. It was anticipated as an interpretation of the myth rather than simply another effects-driven monster film.
- Good Fortune
Aziz Ansari’s body-swap comedy involves a struggling man, a wealthy friend, and a mystical intervention. The setup offered a familiar comic mechanism through which class, privilege, and personal dissatisfaction could be explored. The source list gave the film a U.S. date of October 17, 2025.
- Hamnet
Chloé Zhao’s historical drama focuses on Agnes, William Shakespeare’s wife, and the grief surrounding the death of their son. Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal were among the cast members who drew attention to the project. Rather than treating Shakespeare as the sole center of the story, the premise foregrounded family, mourning, and the woman whose life has often been pushed to the margins of Shakespearean biography.
- Hand of Dante
Julian Schnabel’s crime drama is built around a supposedly authentic Dante manuscript moving through clerical and criminal worlds. That premise links literary history to a thriller structure and creates two kinds of intrigue: whether the manuscript is genuine and what people are willing to do to possess it. For readers who want to follow that literary thread, the original Dante poem is a natural companion to the film’s manuscript-centered premise.

Gareth Evans’ action-crime film follows a wounded detective fighting through a corrupt criminal underworld to rescue a politician’s son. Evans’ reputation for forceful, close-quarters action made the project attractive to viewers looking for a physically intense crime thriller. The film’s premise also placed one compromised law-enforcement figure against a much larger system of corruption.
- Honey Don’t!
Ethan Coen’s pulpy crime comedy stars Chris Evans, Margaret Qualley, and Aubrey Plaza. It was positioned as another entry in Coen’s planned lesbian B-movie trilogy, giving it a deliberately offbeat genre identity. The combination of crime-comedy elements, an unusual creative framework, and a recognizable cast made it one of the list’s more idiosyncratic offerings.
- Hurry Up Tomorrow
Trey Edward Shults’ musical thriller stars The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan. Plot details were initially kept limited, making the cast and musical connection more important to its early anticipation than a clearly publicized story. The listed U.S. date was May 16, 2025.
- In the Grey
Guy Ritchie’s action drama follows extraction specialists arranging an escape route for a senior negotiator. The setup promised a mission-driven thriller built around criminal logistics, shifting alliances, and a difficult rescue operation. Its inclusion reflected the continuing appeal of Ritchie’s fast-moving action and crime projects.

David Sandberg’s expanded feature continuation of the Kung Fury universe had Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Fassbender, and Sandberg attached. Its appeal came from the exaggerated, retro, deliberately unconventional tone associated with the original short film and the prospect of expanding that world into a feature. The source list supplied limited release information, so its status was less certain than that of dated studio releases.
- Long Day’s Journey Into Night
Jonathan Kent’s adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s family drama focuses on addiction, resentment, and a volatile confrontation among relatives. The material is rooted in one of the major works of American theater, making the film relevant to viewers interested in literary and stage adaptations. Its anticipation depended more on the strength of the play and the filmmakers than on franchise recognition.
- Love Child
Todd Solondz’s dark comedy-drama follows an 11-year-old boy attempting to reshape his mother’s romantic life. The premise suggests the uncomfortable blend of family dysfunction, manipulation, and bleak humor associated with Solondz’s work. It was one of the list’s smaller, more provocative character pieces and did not have a firm date supplied in the source selection.
- Marty Supreme
Josh Safdie’s sports-comedy project stars Timothée Chalamet. Plot details were kept under wraps, but the director’s reputation for volatile, high-pressure character stories and Chalamet’s star power made it a significant late-year title. It was presented at the time as an expected December 2025 release rather than a fully detailed, widely dated production.

Christopher McQuarrie’s next Ethan Hunt adventure was framed as a global conspiracy thriller and as a major continuation of the long-running action series. It also appeared at No. 10 on IMDb’s audience-interest ranking, illustrating the difference between the editorial list and the behavior-based list: this title had both filmmaker and franchise anticipation. The listed U.S. date was May 23, 2025.
- Mickey 17
Bong Joon Ho’s science-fiction satire follows an expendable worker sent to colonize an ice planet. The premise creates room for questions about labor, identity, exploitation, and the value assigned to replaceable workers, while Bong’s record as a filmmaker made the project a major draw for viewers seeking ambitious genre cinema. The listed U.S. date was March 7, 2025.
- Mother Mary
David Lowery’s music-industry drama centers on a fictional musician and a famous fashion designer, played by Anne Hathaway and Hunter Schafer. The project combined a creative-industry setting with Lowery’s interest in memory, performance, and emotionally heightened storytelling. It appealed to viewers looking for an original music drama rather than a direct biography of a real performer.
- Nouvelle Vague
Richard Linklater’s film recreates the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless. Its subject matter places it squarely within film history, exploring the people and circumstances behind a landmark of the French New Wave. Linklater’s long-standing interest in cinema history gave the project particular appeal to viewers who enjoy films about filmmaking.

James Vanderbilt’s historical courtroom drama is based on Jack El-Hai’s book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist. The story’s focus on the Nuremberg proceedings and the psychological dimensions surrounding them gave it an obvious connection to historical nonfiction and documentary-minded audiences. Readers who want the factual foundation can look for the book behind Nuremberg, Jack El-Hai’s The Nazi and the Psychiatrist, as a companion to the film’s courtroom subject.
- Outcome
Jonah Hill’s comedy-crime drama follows a Hollywood star forced to confront his past after being threatened with damaging footage. The premise combines celebrity culture, blackmail, and personal reckoning. Its appeal rested on the tension between a comic surface and a potentially darker story about reputation, public image, and the consequences of buried behavior.
- Peter Hujar’s Day
Ira Sachs’ chamber drama reconstructs a 1974 conversation between photographer Peter Hujar and Linda Rosenkrantz. The film was listed with a January 27, 2025 U.S. date. Its deliberately confined structure and historical-artistic subject made it a natural choice for audiences interested in portraiture, literary conversation, photography, and the reconstruction of cultural history.
- Rebuilding
Max Walker-Silverman’s drama follows a rancher displaced by wildfire who finds community in a FEMA camp. The story connects personal loss with disaster recovery, displacement, and the practical work of rebuilding a life after catastrophe. The source list gave it a January 26, 2025 date, though dates of this kind should not automatically be read as a universal theatrical release.

The listed U.S. date was October 3, 2025.
- Sinners
Ryan Coogler’s period horror thriller follows twin brothers returning home and encountering a greater evil. The film combined period setting, family ties, and supernatural horror, making it one of the most prominent original genre projects in the selection. Unlike an established superhero or dinosaur property, its anticipation was driven primarily by Coogler’s name, its stars, and the promise of a new horror world. The listed U.S. date was April 18, 2025.
- The Actor
Duke Johnson’s mystery drama follows an actor who loses his memory after an attack and becomes stranded in 1950s Ohio. The premise turns identity and performance into the central mystery: the protagonist must navigate an unfamiliar life while lacking a reliable connection to his own past. It was one of the more conceptually unusual dramas on the list.
- The Battle of Baktan Cross
Paul Thomas Anderson’s high-profile crime drama featured Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, and Alana Haim. Plot details were kept under wraps, which made the filmmaker and ensemble the main sources of anticipation. The source supplied August 8, 2025 as the U.S. date, but the limited public information meant it should be described as an anticipated project rather than summarized with invented story details.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein-inspired musical drama is set in 1930s Chicago and stars Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, and Jake Gyllenhaal. By combining a familiar Gothic premise with a period setting and musical form, it promised a substantially different approach to Frankenstein than a conventional monster adaptation. The listed U.S. date was September 26, 2025.
- The Chronology of Water
Kristen Stewart’s adaptation of a memoir deals with bisexuality, addiction, and political commitments. Its anticipation came from Stewart’s move behind the camera and from source material that promised a candid, challenging account of identity and self-determination. It belonged to the group of projects whose literary and autobiographical foundations were as important as their cast or genre.
- The History of Sound
Oliver Hermanus’ World War I romance follows two young men recording the voices and music of their countrymen. The film connects intimate romance with the preservation of sound and memory during wartime. Its premise offered both a historical setting and a meditation on what recorded voices can preserve when people and communities are under threat.
- The Lost Bus
Paul Greengrass’ wildfire drama was inspired by California’s Camp Fire and the people who helped others escape. The real disaster context gave the project a clear documentary-adjacent dimension, while Greengrass’ filmmaking suggested a tense, human-scale account of crisis and survival. The source list did not provide a firm date in the same way it did for several major studio releases.

- The Roses
Jay Roach’s relationship comedy-drama follows professional rivalry and resentment inside a seemingly perfect marriage. Rather than relying on a high-concept fantasy or action premise, the film drew interest from the uncomfortable familiarity of competition within an intimate relationship. The source list gave it a U.S. date of February 28, 2025.
- The Running Man
Edgar Wright’s science-fiction adaptation draws on Stephen King’s dystopian premise and stars Glen Powell. Its central appeal was the combination of recognizable source material, a filmmaker known for energetic genre work, and a story built around spectacle, media, and survival. The listed U.S. date was November 7, 2025.
- The Smashing Machine
Benny Safdie’s biographical sports drama follows UFC and mixed-martial-arts champion Mark Kerr, with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt in the leading roles. The subject brought together combat-sports history and a character study of a highly physical professional world. Safdie’s involvement suggested that the film would be interested in the person behind the public athletic image, not only the competition.

Cooper Raiff’s crime drama follows garbage-industry figure Jimmy Galante and his connections to organized crime. The project drew from a real-life criminal and business story, placing it alongside the year’s other films interested in the overlap between legitimate public life and illicit networks.
- The Way of the Wind
Terrence Malick’s historical-religious film retells episodes from the life of Jesus. Its inclusion reflected the continuing interest in Malick’s contemplative, visually ambitious approach to history and spirituality. As with several of the director-driven projects on the list, anticipation was based more on the filmmaker’s artistic identity and subject than on a conventional commercial formula.
- Voyagers
Sebastián Lelio’s biographical romance focuses on astronomer Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan. The film offered a story about science, partnership, and intellectual collaboration, using two real figures whose personal and professional relationship became central to its appeal.
- Warfare
Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s Iraq War drama is based on Mendoza’s experiences as a former Navy SEAL. The project had a direct connection to lived military experience, making it especially relevant to viewers interested in how combat memories are translated into dramatic cinema. Its anticipation came from both Garland’s filmmaking profile and Mendoza’s firsthand basis for the story.

David Michôd’s comedy follows two unlucky beach-bar operators who discover stolen loot. The premise promised a collision between low-level bad decisions, criminal trouble, and farce. It rounded out the list with a scruffy crime-comedy concept rather than a major franchise or traditional prestige biography.
The four kinds of anticipation represented by the list
1. Recognizable franchises and high-concept genre films
The broadest audience interest gathered around titles with familiar worlds, established filmmakers, or immediately legible premises. 28 Years Later revived a recognizable horror universe; Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning continued a major action series; Frankenstein, The Bride, and The Running Man drew on well-known literary or mythic foundations; and Mickey 17, Sinners, and F1 offered high-concept original or genre-driven hooks.
IMDb’s list made the franchise-heavy side even clearer by placing Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, How to Train Your Dragon, Thunderbolts!, Captain America: Brave New World, Snow White, Jurassic World: Rebirth, and A Minecraft Movie in its top ten. Those titles were part of the larger 2025 release landscape even when they were not included in this particular 50-film editorial selection.
2. Director-driven projects
A second group was anticipated because of who was making the film. Danny Boyle, Luca Guadagnino, Steven Soderbergh, Bong Joon Ho, Guillermo del Toro, Yorgos Lanthimos, Ari Aster, Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater, Terrence Malick, Alex Garland, and others each brought a distinct creative identity. For these films, the director’s previous work could be as important to the audience as the plot.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This group also demonstrates why a release-calendar article cannot be reduced to blockbuster titles. A film such as Nouvelle Vague could attract cinephiles through its engagement with film history, while Peter Hujar’s Day could matter to viewers interested in photography and cultural memory. Their audiences may be smaller than those for a superhero sequel, but their anticipation can be intense.
3. Biographies, true stories, and historical subjects
Several projects were built around real people or historical events: The Alto Knights addressed organized-crime figures; Blue Moon focused on Lorenz Hart; Nuremberg drew from Jack El-Hai’s historical book; Roofman centered on Jeffrey Manchester; The Smashing Machine followed Mark Kerr; The Trashers concerned Jimmy Galante; Voyagers portrayed Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan; and Warfare was based on Ray Mendoza’s experiences as a former Navy SEAL.
Best Value
The Lost Bus also had a direct connection to a real disaster, drawing inspiration from California’s Camp Fire and the people who helped others escape. Atlantis was inspired by Pharrell Williams’ childhood, while Hamnet approached the Shakespeare story through Agnes and the family’s grief. These films show the overlap between documentary interests and dramatic cinema: they are not documentaries, but they invite questions about evidence, memory, interpretation, and the ethics of turning real lives into entertainment.
4. Literary, theatrical, and artistic adaptations
The slate also contained a strong adaptation current. Long Day’s Journey Into Night adapted Eugene O’Neill’s family drama; The Running Man drew on Stephen King; Frankenstein and The Bride reworked the Frankenstein tradition; The Chronology of Water adapted a memoir; and Hand of Dante used the mystery of a Dante manuscript as its narrative engine.
Other films engaged directly with artists and art history. Nouvelle Vague recreated the making of Breathless, Peter Hujar’s Day reconstructed a conversation involving a photographer, and The History of Sound used recording as part of its historical and emotional subject. These are the films most likely to send viewers toward books, plays, biographies, archival material, or earlier films after watching.
Why documentary viewers may find this list useful
DocumentaryTube readers may be especially drawn to the films that turn nonfiction subjects into dramatic forms. The most obvious starting points are Nuremberg, Warfare, The Lost Bus, Roofman, The Smashing Machine, The Trashers, The Alto Knights, Voyagers, and Blue Moon. Each is connected to real people, events, or historical contexts, although the films should not be treated as documentary records without checking their underlying sources.
The source-work titles create a second route. Nouvelle Vague points toward the history of Breathless and the French New Wave. Long Day’s Journey Into Night points toward O’Neill’s play. Nuremberg points toward The Nazi and the Psychiatrist. Hand of Dante points toward Dante’s work and the long cultural history surrounding the manuscript tradition. Hamnet invites questions about what can and cannot be known about Shakespeare’s family. In each case, the film is a starting point for research rather than the final word.
Release-date caution
The original list mixed several kinds of release information. Some entries had a specific U.S. date, such as Black Bag on March 14, 28 Years Later on June 20, F1 on June 27, and The Running Man on November 7. Others were described as expected 2025 films, festival-oriented projects, or titles with limited distribution information. A date appearing in a contemporary anticipation guide did not guarantee that every territory received the film on the same day, or that the date represented a wide theatrical release.
| How to interpret an entry | What it means |
|---|---|
| Specific U.S. date listed | The source supplied an announced or reported U.S. date at the time of publication. |
| Expected in 2025 | The project was part of the year’s anticipated slate, but the timing was not necessarily firm. |
| Festival-oriented or limited-detail project | The title may have been circulating through festival, prestige, or industry conversation without a fully defined mass-market release plan. |
| No date supplied | The film should be described as an anticipated project, not as a guaranteed 2025 theatrical release. |
This distinction matters especially for films such as All-Star Weekend, Kung Fury 2, Love Child, Marty Supreme, The Actor, The Battle of Baktan Cross, and The Lost Bus, where the source information emphasized the project, cast, filmmaker, or premise more than a firm release plan.

What this list does—and does not—tell us
The list captures the range of expectations surrounding 2025 cinema. It includes the recognizable properties that dominated audience attention, but it also preserves the less predictable projects that generated excitement through a director, a performer, a historical subject, or a connection to literature and art.
It does not establish a definitive ranking of the year’s quality. It does not prove that every title received a broad U.S. theatrical release, and it does not provide current streaming or rental information. Those details vary by territory and change over time. The most accurate way to use the guide is as a map of the year’s pre-release conversation: a set of films that audiences, critics, festival programmers, and cinephiles had reasons to watch closely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was this an official ranking of the 50 best movies of 2025?
No. The 50-film selection was an editorial anticipation guide, not an objective industry ranking. IMDb’s separate January 2, 2025 list reflected page-view behavior among its users and favored recognizable franchises and major releases. The two lists measured different forms of interest.
Recommended Free Tools
Did all 50 movies definitely come out in 2025?
No. The source list mixed films with firm U.S. dates, projects expected during 2025, festival-oriented titles, and films whose distribution or timing was less certain. A listed date should not be treated as a worldwide release date or proof of a wide theatrical run.
Which films on the list were based on real people or events?
Examples include The Alto Knights, about Vito Genovese and Frank Costello; Blue Moon, about Lorenz Hart; Nuremberg, based on Jack El-Hai’s The Nazi and the Psychiatrist; Roofman, about Jeffrey Manchester; The Smashing Machine, about Mark Kerr; The Trashers, about Jimmy Galante; Voyagers, about Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan; and Warfare, based on Ray Mendoza’s experiences. The Lost Bus was inspired by California’s Camp Fire, while Atlantis drew on Pharrell Williams’ childhood.
Which titles are most relevant to documentary and film-history audiences?
Nuremberg, Warfare, The Lost Bus, Roofman, The Smashing Machine, and The Trashers have strong real-world or historical connections. For film-history interests, Nouvelle Vague revisits the making of Breathless, while Peter Hujar’s Day and The History of Sound explore photography, recording, memory, and cultural preservation.
The Bottom Line
The 50 most anticipated movies of 2025 formed a conversation rather than a single scoreboard. IMDb showed where broad audience attention concentrated, while the wider editorial selection revealed the year’s mix of franchise films, auteur projects, adaptations, biographies, historical dramas, and difficult independent work. For documentary-minded viewers, the richest titles may be the ones that lead beyond the screen—to books, archives, real events, artists, and the history behind the dramatization.
