Remember the tune but not the words? Google Search and SoundHound are clear places to start: both explicitly accept a melody you hum. Deezer SongCatcher, AHA Music, and YouTube’s Android song search are other documented options, each with a different route to results. These are five verified choices—not seven: the available official information does not establish two more humming tools, so adding them would risk confusing humming search with recognition of a recording that is already playing.

How to choose a humming search tool

First check that the service explicitly accepts humming. Some music identifiers listen to a song playing nearby or analyze an uploaded recording; those capabilities are not the same as searching from a tune you sing yourself. The options below are distinguished by access route and what happens after a match appears, not by a ranking of accuracy.

  • For a straightforward search: try Google Search or SoundHound.
  • If you use Deezer: SongCatcher can add a found track to your favorites or a playlist.
  • If you want YouTube results: use YouTube song search in the Android app.
  • For browser-based workflows: AHA Music advertises humming search alongside other input methods.

No comparable, independently validated success rates are established for these services. Treat a result as a candidate and verify it against a chorus, artist, lyric, or recording you recognize. If nothing convincing appears, try again with the clearest, most recognizable melodic phrase.

Five tools that document humming search

Service Humming support and access Useful distinction What to keep in mind
Google Search Google documents humming, whistling, or singing through its song-search flow in the Google app or Search widget. Instructions are available for Android and iPhone and iPad. Returns potential song matches through Google Search. Google’s October 15, 2020 announcement recommends humming for about 10–15 seconds. Check current app controls and availability.
SoundHound SoundHound’s support instructions explicitly describe starting a hum search. A dedicated music discovery app with voice-based search. SoundHound recommends that one person hum or sing for at least 10 seconds. This is guidance, not a promise that a match will appear.
Deezer SongCatcher Deezer describes identifying a song by humming, singing, or whistling with its in-app SongCatcher feature. Found tracks can be saved to Deezer favorites or playlists. The feature was announced on September 27, 2022; check access in your current app and region.
AHA Music AHA Music advertises a “Hum to Search” option on its product page. Its site also describes recording, file upload, video URL search, and browser-extension workflows. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent comparison of recognition performance.
YouTube song search YouTube Help documents humming or recording a song in the YouTube app on Android. Results can lead to related videos, Shorts, and official music content on YouTube. The cited instructions specify Android; do not assume the same feature is available on every device or in every region.

How to get a useful result

  1. Choose a service whose instructions accept humming. Open Google Search, SoundHound, Deezer SongCatcher, AHA Music, or YouTube song search on Android, depending on your device and preferred destination.
  2. Hum a recognizable phrase clearly. Google’s announcement suggests about 10–15 seconds; SoundHound recommends at least 10 seconds from one person. Follow the service’s current on-screen prompt if it differs.
  3. Check the candidates rather than assuming the first result is right. Compare a suggested title with a known chorus, artist, lyric, or recording. Google’s announcement describes results as potential matches.
  4. If needed, retry with the strongest part of the tune. Use the clearest melodic phrase you remember, rather than changing tools based on an assumed accuracy ranking.

Google’s original announcement explains the purpose of the feature: “Today at Search On, we announced that Google can now help you figure it out—no lyrics, artist name or perfect pitch required.” The announcement is dated October 15, 2020; current controls and availability can change.

Why Shazam is not on this humming list

Shazam’s reviewed official app page describes music identification, but does not document humming as an input. That is not proof that every version lacks the feature; it means the available documentation does not verify it as a humming-search option. A tool documented for identifying audio that is already playing should not be presented as a confirmed way to search from a remembered tune.
