The Austin–McMahon rivalry began in late 1997, when WWE storyline authority figure Vince McMahon stripped Stone Cold Steve Austin of the Intercontinental Championship. Austin answered with a Stunner at Madison Square Garden. That clash between McMahon’s attempts to control Austin and Austin’s defiance powered some of WWE’s most memorable televised confrontations.
This retrospective covers five documented moments, not a definitive or ranked list of ten: the exact ten choices implied by the original title are not established by the available sources.

Why Austin and McMahon became such a potent on-screen pairing
WWE’s official biography dates the rivalry to late 1997 and identifies McMahon as one of the men Austin is best remembered for battling. The dynamic was simple and legible: McMahon represented authority, while Austin resisted being managed or restrained. Their conflict could play out as a physical attack, a humiliation, or an audacious entrance that turned the arena into Austin’s territory.
Five defining moments
1. The Madison Square Garden Stunner
After McMahon stripped Austin of the Intercontinental Title, Austin stunned him at Madison Square Garden. The moment established the central pattern of their feud: McMahon could make decisions from a position of authority, but Austin would answer on his own terms. WWE describes this as the first direct confrontation in their rivalry.

2. Austin’s hospital-bedpan attack
WWE’s Raw history retrospective recalls McMahon being struck with a bedpan while in the hospital. The setting made the humiliation part of the point: even away from the ring, McMahon was not beyond Austin’s reach. The retrospective does not supply an exact date, so it is best remembered without assigning one.
3. The Zamboni arrival
On September 28, 1998, Austin drove a Zamboni into the arena and attacked McMahon before being led away in handcuffs, according to ESPN. The vehicle made the entrance as striking as the confrontation itself: Austin did not wait for the show to bring him into McMahon’s orbit.

4. The cement truck and Corvette
On October 12, 1998, McMahon arrived in a white Corvette; later, Austin drove a cement truck and poured cement into the car, WWE recounts. As a staged storyline, it turned McMahon’s prized arrival into the target of an elaborate act of retaliation—and escalated the feud beyond a straightforward ring-side attack.
5. The beer-truck spray
On March 22, 1999, Austin drove a Coors Light truck to the ring while McMahon, Shane McMahon, and The Rock were there, then sprayed them with beer. WWE reports that the truck held 30 gallons. The scene combined an unexpected vehicle entrance with a public humiliation of McMahon and his allies, making Austin’s rebellion impossible to ignore.

What these moments reveal about the feud
The five scenes show how the rivalry changed its form without changing its central conflict. The Madison Square Garden Stunner was a direct answer to McMahon’s authority; the hospital attack and vehicle stunts carried the antagonism into settings and spectacle beyond a conventional match. In each case, the story turned on the same question: could McMahon control Austin, or would Austin find another way to upend the show?
