The Diplomat earned a strong case for being one of 2024’s best dramas with its sharp central performance, fast-moving political thriller plot, and unusual blend of diplomatic tension and relationship comedy. That is a critical judgment, not an objective ranking; the show’s appeal is how those elements work together.
What season two is about
Keri Russell plays Kate Wyler, a crisis-tested U.S. diplomat sent to London as ambassador. There, she has to navigate international crises and a political conspiracy while managing a difficult marriage to fellow diplomat Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell. Season two picks up directly after the bombing cliffhanger at the end of the first season.
Five reasons the series stood out in 2024
1. Keri Russell gives the political story a compelling center
Kate is capable under pressure but never removed from the personal costs of her job. Russell makes the character’s shifting mix of confidence, irritation, and uncertainty the audience’s route into a tangle of competing motives and alliances. Critics repeatedly singled out her performance, and The Guardian’s Jack Seale described Kate as the show’s central figure in his 31 October 2024 review.
2. The plot keeps producing consequences
The season does not treat crises as self-contained episodes: one decision or revelation can change what the next conversation means. The bombing cliffhanger supplies immediate momentum, while the unfolding conspiracy keeps the characters moving through reversals rather than simply explaining events. Seale praised the way scenes push the story forward and consequences accumulate.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Diplomacy has high stakes and a human scale
Negotiations and international maneuvering share the story with the practical absurdities of ambassadorial life and the Wylers’ strained marriage. That combination gives political developments personal consequences without making every scene a briefing. It also makes the series more of a political thriller with relationship drama than a procedural about diplomatic work.
4. Tension and comedy occupy the same rooms
Formal diplomatic settings provide room for sideways humor, while cliffhangers and comic banter keep the pace lively. The Guardian and Vanity Fair both noted this tonal mix in reviews published 31 October 2024. It is not a universal hit: Vanity Fair observed that some jokes do not land, and one Rotten Tomatoes critic excerpt rated the season 3 out of 5, finding its early episodes gloomy before Allison Janney’s character arrives.

5. Allison Janney adds a new force to the ensemble
Janney joins season two as Vice President Grace Penn, bringing a consequential new political presence into a cast led by Russell and Sewell. Critics highlighted her alongside the returning ensemble. Her arrival also changes the shape of the show’s political relationships, rather than simply adding another figure to the background.
Is The Diplomat realistic?
It is fiction informed by practitioners, not a documentary or a record of actual diplomatic procedure. Netflix Tudum reports that the production consulted former ambassadors, diplomats, CIA officers, and former White House staff. Executive producer Janice Williams said realism matters to the show, while consultant Jonathan Powell cautioned that dramatic choices sometimes diverge from real-world practice. The useful expectation is plausible detail in service of entertainment, not a lesson in exactly how a negotiation or government decision would unfold.

At the time of access on 4 October 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed season two at 95% on the Tomatometer from 44 reviews and 85% on the Popcornmeter from more than 500 ratings. Metacritic listed a score of 76 from 23 critic reviews, classifying 19 as positive, four as mixed, and none as negative. These are changing aggregator snapshots, not fixed measures of quality; the mixed reviews also show that the season’s tone and early pacing did not work for everyone.
