The clearest film connections to Taylor Swift’s 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl are visual references in the “The Fate of Ophelia” music video: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Cabaret, and the screen legacy of swimming star Esther Williams. All About Eve is a useful critical parallel, while Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl is the album’s own companion film—not another historical influence.
How the films connect to the album
The evidence is not the same for all five picks. Vanity Fair identifies images associated with Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Cabaret in the “The Fate of Ophelia” video, and says the story in “Father Figure” calls All About Eve to mind. Variety describes an Esther Williams-inspired swimming sequence but does not identify a specific Williams film. Vogue describes the release-party film as a companion to the album.

Swift described the video as a journey through changing kinds of showgirl roles: “The idea I came up with for this music video was sort of a journey throughout all these different ways in which over time periods, historically, you could be a showgirl… Like, how you would be in the public eye back during the 1800s, when you’d sit for a Pre-Raphaelite painting. Or you could be a showgirl by being a cabaret burlesque club performer. You could be a theatrical actor putting on a performance. You could a Vegas showgirl.” Variety reported the remarks from The Official Release Party of a Showgirl. [Variety]
Five movies and film connections to watch
1. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953): Hollywood glamour
This is the strongest classic-film pick. Vanity Fair connects Marilyn Monroe imagery in “The Fate of Ophelia” with the film and its “Sequins Are Forever” framing. Watch for the particular screen image of Monroe as a glamorous performer; the connection is a visual wink, not evidence that Swift’s album retells the film. [Vanity Fair]

2. Cabaret (1972): a cabaret-stage register
Vanity Fair also identifies Liza Minnelli in Cabaret among the video’s visual references. It offers a distinct performance setting from Monroe’s Hollywood musical image: cabaret, with a performer addressing an audience from the stage. The documented link is to the video’s imagery, not a confirmed influence on every song or the album as a whole. [Vanity Fair]
3. An Esther Williams swimming musical: an illustrative companion
Variety reports that a sequence with bathing caps and life preservers celebrates swimming star Esther Williams and also works as an Ophelia reference. It does not name the movie being evoked. For a watchlist, choose a recognizable Williams swimming musical as an illustrative companion, but do not treat that particular title as the confirmed source of Swift’s scene. The connection established by the reporting is to Williams’s screen persona, not to a named film. [Variety]

4. All About Eve (1950): ambition behind the performance
Vanity Fair says the ingenue-and-mentor story in “Father Figure” calls All About Eve to mind. That is a critic’s comparison, not a confirmed Swift influence. The film makes a worthwhile thematic companion for thinking about ambition, mentorship, power, and the competition surrounding a performer’s place in the world. [Vanity Fair]
5. Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl (2025): the album’s companion film
This is not an older movie informing the album’s visual language. Vogue announced it as an album-concept film featuring a new music video, lyric videos, and behind-the-scenes footage. Its original theatrical dates were October 3–5, 2025; those dates do not establish current theater or streaming availability. It belongs on the list as a way to see Swift’s own accompanying material, not as a fifth external influence. [Vogue]

Which should you watch first?
- For the most direct classic-film visual connection: start with Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
- For the cabaret-performance side: choose Cabaret.
- For backstage ambition and mentorship: watch All About Eve, keeping in mind that the link is a critical parallel.
- For Swift’s account of the video and album visuals: look for the release-party film, while checking current availability separately.
The album itself is Swift’s 12th full-length release, following the Eras Tour. In an Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, she described it by personality as “a funnier album.” [Apple Music]
