Only Tron literally pulls a person into a digital game world. The five films in this list explore different crossings between games and reality: immersive play, simulated worlds, a game that recruits its best player, and a computer war simulation that threatens the real world.
The list follows Adil Husnain’s January 22, 2023, TechAnnouncer article, while clarifying what “trapped” means in each story.
What does “trapped in a video game” mean in these films?
These stories do not share one premise. Some put characters inside a digital environment; others use a game as a gateway to a mission or as a model for a simulated reality. WarGames is the furthest from literal entrapment: its danger comes from a computer treating a simulated conflict as a possible real one.
The five films
Tron (1982): Pulled into a digital game world
Computer programmer Kevin Flynn is drawn into a computerized world where he must survive its contests and find a way out. Of these five films, Tron is the clearest match for the idea of being physically trapped inside a video game.

- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
WarGames (1983): A game simulation with real-world stakes
Young hacker David Lightman accesses WOPR, a military computer, and starts a simulated global thermonuclear war. The crisis is not that David enters a game world: it is that the computer may treat the simulation as a real attack and launch one.
The Last Starfighter (1984): A high score becomes a real mission
Alex Rogan’s skill at an arcade game earns him recruitment to fight in an actual interstellar conflict. The game is a selection test, not a world that holds Alex inside it.

eXistenZ (1999): Immersive play and uncertain reality
Allegra Geller and Ted Pikul enter an immersive game using organic game pods and bio-ports. The story layers play and reality in a surreal way, so it is better understood as a game-within-a-game than as a straightforward escape-from-a-level adventure.
The Matrix (1999): A simulated world mistaken for reality
Thomas Anderson discovers that the world he experiences is a virtual simulation. Unlike Tron, the premise is not simply that someone has been transported into a conventional game; the film turns on the possibility that perceived reality itself is simulated.
