For a relaxed New Year’s Day at home, choose a film to match the mood: A Very Merry Pooh Year for a story that actually reaches New Year’s, A New Hope for a midnight countdown ritual, or one of three picks with a looser seasonal or wish-themed connection. The recommendations below come from a list updated January 1, 2025; Disney+ availability varies by region, so check your local catalogue before you settle on a movie.
Choose by mood and how closely you want the film tied to New Year’s
| Movie | New Year’s connection | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| A Very Merry Pooh Year (2002) | Its story begins at Christmas and reaches New Year’s Eve. | Cozy family viewing |
| Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) | A movie moment can be timed to land the Death Star’s destruction at midnight. | An active countdown |
| Cruella (2021) | Parties and fashion-forward spectacle, rather than a New Year’s plot. | Glamorous, stylish viewing |
| Lego Star Wars Holiday Special (2020) | A wintry Life Day celebration offers a seasonal, not specifically New Year’s, feel. | Playful franchise fun |
| Wish (2023) | A story about wishes suits a resolution-minded mood. | A hopeful, reflective watch |
Pick a film for the kind of New Year’s Day you want
For a cozy family story: A Very Merry Pooh Year
The 2025 recommendation list describes this as its only Disney+ pick actually about New Year’s. The story starts at Christmas and ends on New Year’s Eve, with Rabbit reconciling with the others before a celebration. That makes it the most direct holiday-story choice here, rather than simply a movie that feels wintry or hopeful.

For a midnight countdown: Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
Disney Experiences’ New Year’s Eve countdown guide suggests starting the film at 10:02:43 p.m. so the Death Star’s destruction lines up with midnight. It is a playful way to turn a familiar space adventure into a countdown event. The timing is tied to the guide’s viewing setup; playback and edition differences can affect synchronization, and the timing has not been independently tested here.
For fashion, parties, and spectacle: Cruella
If the appeal is a glamorous night-in rather than a holiday plot, this origin story centers on fashion and parties. The recommendation list also notes the film’s costume-design Oscar win and Emma Stone’s Golden Globe nomination. Its New Year’s connection is atmosphere: it suits a celebratory, stylish mood.

For a playful seasonal franchise watch: Lego Star Wars Holiday Special
This animated special is about Life Day in the Star Wars universe, not New Year’s. Its wintry holiday setting and jokes make it a light seasonal option for viewers who want franchise characters without making the movie itself a countdown or resolution story.
For a hopeful, resolution-minded mood: Wish
A film about wishes can pair naturally with the custom of making New Year’s wishes or resolutions. That is a thematic match, not a New Year’s storyline, so choose it when you want a hopeful tone more than holiday-specific scenes.

The five recommendations were published in a list updated January 1, 2025; that does not establish that every title is currently available in every country. Disney+ says viewers can browse Originals, Movies, and Series in the app, while its discovery page notes that content availability varies by region. Check your local catalogue on the day you plan to watch:
- Open Disney+ and browse the Movies section, or search directly for the title.
- Confirm that the movie appears in your market’s catalogue and is playable on the profile you plan to use.
- If it is unavailable, choose another title from the list that appears in your local results.
See Disney+’s app navigation guidance and its discovery page for those browsing options and the regional availability note. The recommendations and their New Year’s framing come from Keith Langston’s Digital Trends list, “5 great Disney+ movies to watch this New Year’s Day”, updated January 1, 2025. The countdown timing comes from Disney Experiences’ New Year’s Eve movie countdown guide, published December 28, 2023.
