There is no official WWE top ten for these two Undertaker personas, so this is a subjective double ranking: five matches that best capture the theatrical Deadman and five that show the more grounded biker-era brawler. The labels overlap. Retrospective coverage often groups “Biker Taker,” “American Badass” and the later “Big Evil” presentation together; that broader era ran from 2000 to 2003, before Undertaker returned to his classic persona at WrestleMania XX (WWE profile; 2020 retrospective).
The selections weigh match format, stakes, opponent chemistry, storytelling and how clearly each bout expresses the character—not just spectacle or fame. WWE records Undertaker’s final WrestleMania record as 25–2 and his retirement at Survivor Series on November 22, 2020, exactly 30 years after his WWE debut (WWE profile).
Five best Undertaker matches as The Deadman
These bouts lean into the character’s mythic presence: supernatural rivalries, elaborate stakes and the sense that a match is part of a much larger story.
1. The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels — WrestleMania 25 (2009)
This is the defining showcase of Undertaker’s Streak-era run: two iconic performers, a major WrestleMania setting and a contest built around the question of whether Michaels could end the streak. WWE lists it as Undertaker’s longest WrestleMania match, lasting 30:41 (WWE match record). Its scale and suspense make it the strongest single example of the Deadman as a WrestleMania attraction.

2. The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels — WrestleMania 26 (2010)
The rematch works because it changes the stakes rather than simply repeating the previous year’s formula: Michaels puts his career on the line against Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak. That career-versus-Streak premise gives their rivalry a conclusive emotional payoff and makes the bout feel like the final chapter of a story, not just another high-profile match.
3. The Undertaker vs. Mankind — Hell in a Cell, King of the Ring (1998)
This match remains a defining collision between the Deadman’s horror-movie aura and Mankind’s willingness to endure punishment. The Hell in a Cell setting amplifies the sense of danger and spectacle, making it a natural pick for the character’s most memorable supernatural-era work. Its place here is about impact and atmosphere as much as conventional match structure.

4. The Undertaker vs. Edge — WrestleMania XXIV (2008)
Edge brought a calculating, opportunistic foil to Undertaker’s imposing presence, and the WrestleMania stakes were substantial: WWE’s official profile notes that Undertaker defeated Edge to win the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXIV (WWE profile). The match captures the Deadman-era blend of a long-running rivalry, championship consequence and the pressure of a Streak match.
5. The Undertaker vs. Kane — WrestleMania XX (2004)
The brothers’ history made this less a first encounter than a confrontation with the Undertaker’s own mythology. WWE says the victory over Kane at WrestleMania XX extended the Streak to 12–0 (WWE Brothers of Destruction history). The return to the familiar Deadman presentation gave the rivalry a strong symbolic dimension alongside the personal conflict.

Five best Undertaker matches as The American Badass
This list follows a 2020 retrospective’s selection of notable bouts from the biker-era presentation. It is one critic’s set of choices, not an official WWE ranking (2020 retrospective). The matches show a more direct, physical Undertaker, with championship stakes and brawling often taking precedence over supernatural staging.
1. The Undertaker vs. Jeff Hardy — WWE Championship ladder match, Raw (July 1, 2002)
Hardy’s speed and risk-taking provided a sharp contrast to Undertaker’s power in a ladder match for the WWE Championship. The retrospective highlights Hardy’s ability to push the champion and describes the bout as a star-making performance. It is an especially revealing choice for this persona: Undertaker is a forceful champion, but the younger challenger’s daredevil style makes the match’s central tension work.

2. The Undertaker vs. Ric Flair — WrestleMania X8 (2002)
This is a strong character-story pick from Undertaker’s shift toward the Big Evil presentation. Flair’s experience and emotional investment make him a compelling opponent for a more aggressive, grounded Undertaker; the match’s appeal lies in the contrast between Flair’s veteran resolve and the biker-era character’s blunt menace.
3. The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar — Hell in a Cell, No Mercy (2002)
The retrospective frames this as a brutal clash between an established veteran and an apparently unstoppable rising champion. The enclosed setting suits the match’s hard-edged tone, while the contrast in career position gives the violence a clear story: Undertaker is meeting a new kind of threat, not another supernatural rival.

4. The Undertaker vs. The Rock vs. Kurt Angle — Vengeance (2002)
A triple-threat match changes the rhythm from a direct one-on-one fight: every competitor has to account for two opponents, and alliances can shift in an instant. The retrospective singles out the finish as a strength. Its inclusion also shows that the American Badass persona was not limited to straightforward brawls; Undertaker could hold his own in a faster, more tactical format.
5. The Brothers of Destruction vs. The Two-Man Power Trip — Backlash (2001)
This Winner Take All tag match expands the list beyond singles competition. Undertaker teamed with Kane as the Brothers of Destruction against the Two-Man Power Trip, with the titles held by the teams at stake, according to the 2020 retrospective. The tag format makes the bout a useful counterpoint to the other selections: the biker-era Undertaker is still a dominant individual presence, but the story depends on partnership and collective stakes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What separates the two versions of Undertaker?
The Deadman matches tend to draw power from presentation and accumulated mythology: the Streak, supernatural rivalries and WrestleMania-scale storytelling. The biker-era choices tend toward physical directness, title stakes and opponents whose styles or reputations test Undertaker in a more grounded setting. These are interpretive categories rather than official WWE divisions. The labels themselves are flexible: “American Badass,” “Biker Taker” and “Big Evil” are commonly grouped in retrospective coverage of the 2000–03 period, which ended when Undertaker returned to his classic persona at WrestleMania XX (2020 retrospective).
