Rotten Tomatoes’ 47 Best Shark Movies Ranked is ordered by Tomatometer, the site’s measure of critics’ reviews—not by a universal verdict on which film every viewer will enjoy most. Its leading entries range from suspense thrillers to documentaries, an expedition adventure and deliberately campy creature-feature fun.
The ranking was published by Alex Vo on July 21, 2025. Rotten Tomatoes’ positions and scores can change as reviews are added or updated, so treat the figures as a snapshot rather than a fixed list.

What the ranking measures
The guide’s 47 numbered films are ranked by Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer. That makes the order useful for seeing how critics’ scores compare within this collection, but it does not measure personal taste, audience preference or how frightening a film is. The list’s promotional invitation to “see every shark movie ever” should not be read as evidence that it includes every shark film ever made.
At the time the page was retrieved on October 4, 2026, Jaws was ranked #1 with a 97% Tomatometer. That is a dated Rotten Tomatoes score snapshot, and the page may show a different score or ordering later. Check the Rotten Tomatoes guide for its current ranking.

Choose by mood and format
For serious suspense
Start with Jaws or The Shallows if you want a fictional shark-peril thriller. The Reef, also among the first 10, is another entry in that mode. Their high placement in this guide reflects Tomatometer ordering, not a promise that their style or intensity will suit every viewer.
Rank #2
- Factory sealed DVD
For documentary storytelling
Choose Playing with Sharks for a documentary Rotten Tomatoes frames around a shark expert’s legacy and environmental advocacy. Sharkwater, Sharkwater Extinction, and After the Bite are also documentaries in the guide’s leading 10. This is the clearest path through the list if you want nonfiction rather than a fictional survival story.
For an adventure
Kon-Tiki offers a different kind of shark-film experience: an adventure based on a historical expedition, rather than a conventional shark attack thriller.
Rank #3
For camp
Sharknado is the pick if you want knowingly outlandish creature-feature entertainment. Rotten Tomatoes’ description “so bad it’s good” signals a very different aim from the suspense of Jaws or the advocacy focus of a documentary.
How to use the full 47-film list
- Choose a format first. Decide whether you want fiction or a documentary; the opening entries alone include both.
- Set the mood. Narrow the options to suspense, documentary advocacy, historical adventure or camp rather than assuming every title is horror.
- Read the score as critics’ reception. A higher position means a stronger Tomatometer standing in this guide, not a guarantee that you will prefer that film.
- Check the live page before relying on a rank or percentage. Rotten Tomatoes can update scores and ordering as reviews change.
Where to find the guide and Jaws editions
Rotten Tomatoes’ July 21, 2025 guide says, “And we’ve teamed up with Fandango at Home for a shark movie sale page!” That statement establishes a partnership mention at publication, not that a sale remains live or that any particular terms apply now.
Rank #4
- Sharks 3D (3D & 2D)
- Sharks 3D
For viewers who want a physical edition of the guide’s #1 film, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced the Jaws 50th Anniversary Edition for June 17, 2025, in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and Digital formats. Universal’s official product page lists a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital edition as well as Blu-ray and DVD formats. These details establish edition formats and release availability, not current retailer stock or prices; buying a disc is not necessary to use the ranking.
