The shape’s return taps into 1990s and 2000s nostalgia, but it is also a versatile canvas: sheer neutrals, milky polish, burgundy, dark colors, French tips and graphic details all suit the outline. What makes a nail square—and how does squoval differ?
A square nail has straight sides that meet a flat, straight tip at defined corners. Squoval keeps the broadly squared outline but rounds those corners. As manicurist Julia Diogo put it to Vogue, “The main difference is created by the corners.” Square looks more structured; squoval is a softer alternative if sharp edges feel too severe or catch on things.
Square can work on short, medium or long nails. Vogue’s March 2026 feature said medium-to-long lengths were then trending, while its examples and British Vogue’s 2026 feature show the shape across a range of lengths. These are editorial observations, not a measured popularity ranking.

- Medium square in burgundy: Use a rich opaque shade to make the length feel intentional.

How to file nails into a square shape at home
Vogue’s professional guidance is to start with some length, file straight across in one direction and buffer the corners after shaping. A fine nail file creates the edge; a buffer can soften corners without removing the square character. A manicurist also noted that the shape can suit narrow, uniform nail beds, but that is styling guidance—not a rule about who can wear it.
- Choose the outline: Decide whether you want crisp square corners or a slightly softened, squoval-leaning edge.
- File across the tip: Move the file straight across the free edge in one direction rather than sawing back and forth.
- Check the sides: Make sure the sides remain straight and the free edge is level.
- Soften if desired: Lightly buffer the corners. This changes the feel of the edge but does not guarantee that nails will not chip, snag or break.
What to know about wear, snagging and gel polish
Square’s sharp corners give it definition, but the tradeoff is practical: manicurists quoted by Vogue say square tips can break more easily and that corners may catch or snag. They describe the shape as a better fit for stronger nails; this is professional advice, not a controlled comparison of nail shapes. If catching is a concern, soften the corners or choose squoval.

The shape itself is separate from the effects of the polish. The American Academy of Dermatology Association says gel manicures can contribute to brittleness, peeling and cracking. It also warns that repeated gel use can increase risks of skin cancer and premature skin aging on the hands. Its guidance includes asking whether salon tools are sterilized, avoiding cuticle pushing or cutting, applying broad-spectrum water-resistant SPF 30 or higher before a gel manicure or wearing dark opaque gloves with the fingertips cut off, and not picking off gel.
