The 2026 Year of the Horse began on February 17. You can mark it by reconnecting with someone, sharing a sincere wish, learning about the horse’s cultural associations, or joining a local celebration. Lunar New Year customs vary among communities, families, and individuals, so treat these as adaptable ideas—not a universal checklist.
1. Reconnect with family or friends
A visit, shared meal, or phone call can make the new year an occasion to give someone your attention. The Shanghai Municipal Government’s English-language Spring Festival customs guide describes New Year visits as a way to welcome the year and exchange heartfelt wishes.
Make the gesture fit your relationship
- Visit or invite someone for a meal if that suits both of you.
- If distance or schedules make a visit difficult, arrange a call or send a personal message.
- Follow the preferences and customs of the people you are reaching out to; there is no single required way to observe.
2. Share a sincere wish
Instead of relying on a formula, say what you genuinely hope for the person: health, harmony, progress, or more time together. The Shanghai guide describes heartfelt wishes as part of New Year visits and notes the horse idiom “ma dao cheng gong,” used to express timely success. A greeting can be simple and personal; no particular phrase is required.
Keep it personal, not prescriptive
Choose a wish that feels appropriate to your relationship and the recipient’s circumstances. A handwritten note, spoken greeting, or message can all carry the same thought. Red envelopes are mentioned in the Shanghai guide’s description of Lunar New Year celebrations, but gifting practices differ; giving one is optional, and buying anything is not necessary to take part meaningfully.
#1 Best Overall
- Meaningful Chinese symbolism: This horse carries a traditional fortune bag, representing prosperity, progress, and good fortune. A distinctive decorative accent inspired by Chinese culture.
- Compact tabletop size: Measuring 3.54 inches long and 2.76 inches high, this small horse figurine fits easily on an office desk, bookshelf, nightstand, windowsill, or living room display.
- Detailed resin construction: Made of durable resin with carefully sculpted details, this lightweight statue is easy to display and move without taking up much space. Designed for indoor display only.
- Decor for many spaces: Add a culturally inspired accent to a home office, study, entryway, bedroom, or workspace. Its compact design works especially well in small display areas.
- A thoughtful good luck gift: A meaningful choice for housewarmings, birthdays, business openings, office celebrations, Chinese New Year, or everyday gifting for family, friends, coworkers, and horse lovers.
3. Learn what the horse represents
The Shanghai Municipal Government’s English-language Spring Festival customs guide says, “The horse holds a special place in Chinese culture, symbolizing strength, speed, vitality, and an enterprising spirit.” The guide identifies the horse as the seventh animal of the Chinese zodiac. Lingnan University’s February 2026 discussion also examines the sign’s cultural meanings in customs, classical texts, history, and contemporary greetings.
Approach symbolism as culture, not prediction
These are cultural associations, not guarantees about a person’s character or future. Reading about how the horse appears in different contexts can be a thoughtful way to engage with the holiday without assuming that every celebrant interprets the zodiac in the same way.

4. Join a local celebration or cultural activity
If you prefer a public gathering, look for a local Lunar New Year event, performance, museum program, or cultural activity. Public celebrations can bring people together through performances and community events: New Zealand’s Ministry for Ethnic Communities reported those elements at a Parliament celebration in February 2026. The National Museum of China reported a Year of the Horse exhibition in April 2026. These are dated examples, not recommendations for events that are currently open or upcoming.
Choose an event that works for you
- Check the organizer’s current listing for dates, location, access information, and any attendance requirements.
- Consider whether you would rather join a large public event, a museum activity, or a smaller community gathering.
- If no suitable event is available, reading or learning about the holiday can be a meaningful alternative.
Some customs are specific to particular families or communities. For example, the Shanghai guide describes a folk belief against sweeping on New Year’s Day because it is thought to sweep away wealth and good luck. That is a reported belief, not an instruction that all readers or celebrants must follow.
