3I/ATLAS is no longer approaching Earth: it made its closest pass on December 19, 2025, at about 1.8 astronomical units (AU), or roughly 270 million kilometers (170 million miles). NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) say it posed no threat. To follow its trajectory, use NASA’s Eyes on the Solar System visualization; it is a trajectory display, not necessarily a live telescope image.
Where is 3I/ATLAS now?
As of October 4, 2026, an independent 3I/ATLAS tracker’s date-indexed ephemeris lists the comet at right ascension 14h 20m 35.5s and declination −12° 46′ 49″. It gives an Earth distance of 1.8234 AU, a distance from the Sun of 2.5162 AU, and a predicted apparent magnitude of 12.45. These are the tracker’s predictions for that date, not an official NASA or ESA instantaneous position or a confirmed observation. See the tracker’s ephemeris for its date-indexed data.
For an authoritative overview of the object’s path, NASA’s Eyes on the Solar System lets you explore a modeled trajectory. A simulation or ephemeris can show where an object is predicted to be without showing a live image of it through a telescope.
Is 3I/ATLAS approaching Earth?
No. The closest Earth approach has already happened. NASA dates it to December 19, 2025, at about 1.8 AU—roughly 270 million kilometers or 170 million miles. ESA also reports a closest distance of about 270 million kilometers. Both agencies say the comet posed no threat to Earth; ESA notes it was on the far side of the Sun at closest approach. NASA’s later post-encounter figure is the appropriate one for describing what happened, rather than the earlier discovery-era forecast of a minimum distance of 1.6 AU.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What is 3I/ATLAS?
3I/ATLAS is the third known interstellar object discovered passing through the Solar System. NASA classifies it as interstellar because its hyperbolic path is not a closed orbit around the Sun. It is passing through rather than settling into a repeating solar orbit.
How to follow its trajectory
Use NASA’s trajectory visualization
- Open NASA Eyes on the Solar System.
- Find 3I/ATLAS in the interface and inspect its path in relation to the planets and Sun. The visualization helps orient you to the trajectory; it is not a substitute for a timestamped observing ephemeris or a telescope image.
Read a date-specific ephemeris carefully
An ephemeris provides predicted positions for specified dates and times. Before treating coordinates as suitable for finding an object in the sky, check the timestamp or epoch, coordinate frame, update cadence, and whether the values are predictions or observations. The independent tracker’s October 4, 2026 row is date-specific; it should not be described as a live position feed.

Can you see 3I/ATLAS tonight?
The sources here do not establish practical visibility on October 4, 2026, or confirm local observing conditions. NASA’s FAQ said ground-based observations were expected to continue until spring 2026, but that forecast does not establish whether the comet can be seen now. The independent tracker’s predicted magnitude of 12.45 is not enough on its own to promise visibility or recommend binoculars. A useful observing check would need a current ephemeris for your location and time, the comet’s altitude and angular distance from the Sun, sky darkness, available equipment, and a current brightness estimate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When did it pass closest to the Sun?
The Sun encounter is separate from the Earth approach. NASA gives perihelion as around October 30, 2025, at about 1.4 AU (roughly 210 million kilometers). ESA gives October 29, 2025, and about 203 million kilometers. Those are rounded, source-specific figures; the one-day difference should not be read as greater precision than the agencies report.
