Anime popularity has never been measured by one universal scoreboard. A Japanese magazine poll, a worldwide franchise vote, a streaming-era award and decades of cultural recognition all measure different things. The 35 characters below are therefore presented as a curated historical selection, not a definitive ranking from No. 1 to No. 35.
The list spans television pioneers, shōnen heroes, magical-girl icons, antiheroes, supporting characters and recent global breakouts. Where an official poll or award provides useful evidence, it is identified without treating that result as proof of all-time popularity.
How this list defines popularity
A character qualifies through at least one strong signal: repeated success in official franchise polls, a major worldwide character vote, international award recognition, long-term cultural influence or unusually broad reach across generations and countries. Popularity is not the same as writing quality, strength, search volume or universal approval.
Polls also need context. The 2023 NARUTOP99 vote received roughly 4.6 million votes, while the One Piece WT100 uses several voting methods with different weights. Neither can be compared directly with a one-vote-per-person survey or with a current award category.

Foundational icons
1. Usagi Tsukino / Sailor Moon — Sailor Moon
Usagi transformed the magical-girl protagonist into a global pop-culture symbol. Her mixture of comic clumsiness, romance, friendship and cosmic responsibility helped Sailor Moon travel far beyond its original audience. She is best understood as a historical icon rather than the winner of one all-anime popularity poll.
2. Pikachu — Pokémon
Pikachu is one of the most recognizable animated characters in the world and the mascot most closely associated with Pokémon. Its appeal rests on design, sound, merchandising and the anime’s long reach. Pikachu is a principal character and franchise symbol, not the human protagonist of the original television story.
3. Ash Ketchum / Satoshi — Pokémon
Ash was the human lead of the first major Pokémon anime era, accompanying viewers through leagues, regions and generations of companions. His long television run made him a defining anime protagonist for audiences who encountered anime through broadcast television. Current Pokémon series should be identified by era rather than described as continuing to have Ash as its unqualified protagonist.
4. Conan Edogawa — Case Closed / Detective Conan
Conan’s appeal comes from endurance as much as character design: the series has made a child detective, disguised identity and locked-room mystery familiar to several generations. The Japanese title is Detective Conan; English-language releases commonly use Case Closed.

Shōnen legends
5. Son Goku — Dragon Ball
Goku is the template for the modern battle-shōnen hero: cheerful, relentlessly curious and always ready to test himself against a stronger opponent. He won the first worldwide Dragon Ball character popularity poll, “DRAGON BALL THE ONE,” by a wide margin. That is powerful franchise evidence, not an official all-anime ranking.
6. Vegeta — Dragon Ball
Vegeta began as Goku’s enemy and became one of anime’s most durable rivals and antiheroes. His pride, defeats and gradual commitment to his family give him a different emotional register from Goku. He remains a recurring high-profile contender in Dragon Ball popularity discussions and official franchise voting.
7. Monkey D. Luffy — One Piece
Luffy’s elastic powers are less important to his popularity than his stubborn loyalty and expansive idea of freedom. The official One Piece site records six consecutive first-place finishes in the series’ first six Japanese character polls. A later worldwide WT100 poll was still awaiting its final results on August 9, 2026, so Luffy should not be called the current No. 1 anime character.
8. Roronoa Zoro — One Piece
Zoro’s straightforward ambition, comic lack of direction and spectacular swordsmanship make him one of the strongest supporting-character successes in mainstream anime. He finished second in the sixth Japanese One Piece popularity poll and has consistently remained near the top of franchise voting.

9. Naruto Uzumaki — Naruto
Naruto’s story of an isolated child seeking recognition gave the long-running ninja series its emotional centre. He remains one of the best-known anime protagonists of the 2000s and placed prominently in the official NARUTOP99 worldwide poll.
10. Sasuke Uchiha — Naruto
Sasuke is Naruto’s rival, mirror and eventual ally, with a story built around grief, revenge and the burden of inherited conflict. His popularity is distinct from Naruto’s: the NARUTOP99 results identified him as a notable regional favourite, particularly in Japan.

The Death Note grants its user the ability to kill anyone simply by writing down their name on the notebook.
11. Sakura Haruno — Naruto
Sakura’s development from inexperienced student to elite medical ninja made her one of the most discussed female characters in the series. She finished third in NARUTOP99, and creator Masashi Kishimoto specifically commented on her worldwide popularity.
12. Minato Namikaze — Naruto
Minato had comparatively limited screen time before becoming a major fan favourite through flashbacks, legend and the history of Naruto’s family. He won NARUTOP99, the first worldwide Naruto character poll. That makes him the winner of that poll, not the most popular anime character in history.

Ichigo’s appeal lies in the collision of ordinary teenage responsibility with increasingly complicated supernatural identities. As the protagonist of Bleach, he anchors one of the major long-running shōnen franchises. The renewed attention around Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has extended his visibility to a new streaming audience.
14. Tanjiro Kamado — Demon Slayer
Tanjiro combines an unusually gentle personality with the resolve required of a demon hunter. His empathy gives the series a different emotional texture from many revenge-driven action stories. The enormous international reach of Demon Slayer, including major Crunchyroll recognition for the franchise, has made him one of the defining protagonists of the current era.
15. Izuku Midoriya / Deku — My Hero Academia
Deku’s central idea is simple and durable: heroism can be learned, practised and chosen even by someone born without a superpower. He finished second in the published worldwide My Hero Academia popularity poll, a clear example of strong franchise-specific evidence.
16. Katsuki Bakugo — My Hero Academia
Bakugo’s explosive temper initially makes him Deku’s antagonist, but his ambition and gradual self-awareness create a more complicated rival. He won the worldwide My Hero Academia poll with 1,647,611 votes and later received further recognition as a major supporting character.
Modern global breakouts
17. Eren Yeager — Attack on Titan
Eren begins as a furious young soldier seeking revenge and becomes a far more divisive figure as the story expands its political and moral scope. His popularity reflects the worldwide reach of Attack on Titan, although audience recognition should not be confused with approval of his decisions. Miguel Ángel Leal’s 2025 Crunchyroll award for Latin Spanish voice performance is one recent recognition connected to the character.
18. Mikasa Ackerman — Attack on Titan
Mikasa is one of the franchise’s principal characters, defined by exceptional combat ability, loyalty and the struggle to choose her own future. She is not the series’ sole protagonist, and her inclusion here rests on sustained franchise recognition rather than one universal popularity table.
19. Levi Ackerman — Attack on Titan
Levi demonstrates how a supporting character can become a global draw. His controlled manner, battlefield competence and sharply understated humour made him a standout in a cast already built around memorable figures. He is a major supporting character, not the main character of Attack on Titan.
20. Satoru Gojo — Jujutsu Kaisen
Gojo’s blindfold, playful confidence and overwhelming ability made him an immediate modern breakout. He also benefits from the rapid international growth of Jujutsu Kaisen. Claims that he is definitively “the most popular anime character in the world” are fan shorthand, not the result of a verified all-anime survey.

21. Nezuko Kamado — Demon Slayer
Nezuko’s visual design, wordless expressiveness and unusual position as both demon and protector gave Demon Slayer one of its most recognizable figures. Her popularity should be treated as character-level recognition, separate from awards won by the series or by Tanjiro.
22. Anya Forger — SPY x FAMILY
Anya turned telepathy, family secrecy and comic misunderstanding into one of the most immediately shareable character performances of recent anime. Her facial expressions and invented vocabulary travel easily across clips and social media, while her popularity has also received formal support: she won Crunchyroll’s “Must Protect At All Costs” character award in both 2025 and 2026.
23. Frieren — Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Frieren reverses the usual fantasy-adventure timetable: the demon king is already defeated, and the elf mage must confront the meaning of a journey after its apparent ending. Her quiet grief and radically different sense of time made her a major contemporary character. She was nominated for Best Main Character at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, while the series won Best Drama.
24. Maomao — The Apothecary Diaries
Maomao’s practical intelligence, fascination with poisons and refusal to behave like a conventional court heroine distinguish her from many historical-drama protagonists. The character’s popularity crossed from manga and anime audiences into major award recognition: she won Best Anime Main Character at the 2026 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
25. Sung Jinwoo — Solo Leveling
Sung Jinwoo embodies the progression-fantasy appeal of becoming visibly stronger episode by episode. His transformation from the weakest hunter to a commanding supernatural figure helped Solo Leveling connect with a large international streaming audience. He won Best Main Character at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, and the series won Anime of the Year.

26. Edward Elric — Fullmetal Alchemist
Edward’s short stature, quick temper and fierce moral seriousness make him more than a conventional action hero. His journey through equivalent exchange, war and responsibility has kept Fullmetal Alchemist influential long after its original broadcast era. User rankings on MyAnimeList can show enthusiasm within that site’s community, but they are not a universal measure of global opinion.
27. Spike Spiegel — Cowboy Bebop
Spike’s relaxed movements and fatalistic humour conceal a character trapped by his past. Along with the series’ jazz soundtrack and genre-blending direction, he helped make Cowboy Bebop a gateway anime for many international viewers, particularly those who encountered it through late-night television.
28. Light Yagami — Death Note
Light is compelling because the story invites viewers to follow his intelligence while steadily exposing the danger of his self-appointed justice. His popularity does not imply approval of his actions. He remains one of anime’s most recognizable antiheroes precisely because the series turns moral certainty into suspense.
29. L — Death Note
L’s crouched posture, eccentric habits and almost unnerving deductive ability made the detective a phenomenon in his own right. His rivalry with Light gives Death Note its central intellectual contest, but the two characters’ popularity should not be treated as a settled worldwide comparison without a defined poll.
30. Saitama — One-Punch Man
Saitama’s joke is also the premise: a hero who can defeat any opponent with one punch is bored by the lack of a meaningful challenge. His blank expression and mundane concerns turn superhero escalation into satire, giving him recognition well beyond conventional battle-shōnen audiences.

31. Killua Zoldyck — Hunter × Hunter
Killua’s friendship with Gon is central to Hunter × Hunter, but his popularity stands independently. The contrast between his assassin upbringing, sharp tactical mind and growing capacity for tenderness makes him one of anime’s most enduring supporting characters. Gon Freecss is the protagonist; Killua is not a substitute name for him.
32. Asuka Langley — Neon Genesis Evangelion
Asuka’s pride, insecurity and aggressive self-protection made her a landmark in the evolution of anime character writing. The continuity matters: “Soryu” belongs to the original television continuity, while “Shikinami” is used for the Rebuild films.

Rei’s restrained presence, enigmatic identity and visual design influenced decades of anime character archetypes. Her importance is historical as well as contemporary, and should not be reduced to current social-media activity or a single popularity vote.
34. Inuyasha — Inuyasha
Inuyasha helped define the international early-2000s anime experience, combining feudal fantasy, romance, comedy and action. His half-demon identity drives the series’ central conflict. The original Inuyasha story should be distinguished from the later sequel series Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon.
35. Himura Kenshin — Rurouni Kenshin
Kenshin’s vow never to kill again gives the wandering swordsman a moral problem that is more interesting than his technical mastery. He remains a historically prominent anime protagonist, appearing in both the 1996 adaptation and the newer 2023 reboot. Those versions should be named separately when discussing his screen history.
Why there is no definitive No. 1
Goku, Luffy, Naruto, Sailor Moon and Pikachu can all plausibly be described as among anime’s most popular characters, but they represent different kinds of success. One character may dominate a global franchise poll; another may be recognised by people who have never watched the series; another may have shaped later character design or storytelling.

FAQ
Who is the most popular anime character ever?
There is no universally accepted all-anime popularity ranking. Goku, Luffy, Naruto, Sailor Moon and Pikachu are among the strongest candidates depending on whether the measure is an official poll, cultural recognition, franchise reach or international awareness.
Is this an official ranking of the 35 most popular anime characters?
No. It is a curated, unranked selection based on official franchise polls, awards, long-term influence and global recognition. Different polls use different audiences, dates and voting rules.
Did Minato win a worldwide anime popularity poll?
Minato won NARUTOP99, the first worldwide character poll for the Naruto franchise, which received approximately 4.6 million votes. He did not win an all-anime popularity poll.

Pikachu is the Pokémon franchise mascot and a principal anime character. Ash Ketchum was the human protagonist of the original major television era, while later Pokémon series introduced different protagonists and casts.
The Bottom Line
The most defensible way to discuss anime popularity is historically, not as a forced numerical league table. Goku, Sailor Moon, Pikachu, Luffy, Naruto and the newer generation of characters such as Gojo, Anya, Frieren and Maomao became popular through different combinations of audience loyalty, official voting, awards and cultural reach. That variety is what makes anime history more interesting than a single leaderboard.
