For a Mardi Gras manicure, start with purple, green and gold—the traditional New Orleans Carnival colors—and vary the finish and placement to suit your time and tools. These 33 combinations range from simple French tips and dotted accents to magnetic watercolor effects and raised gems. The designs are inspiration concepts, not tested or source-verified trends.
Why purple, green and gold belong in a Mardi Gras manicure
The Rex Organization says its founders selected purple, green and gold for the King of Carnival standard, and that the colors became traditional for New Orleans Carnival. NewOrleans.com gives the customary meanings as purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power, and says Rex proclaimed the colors in 1872. Those meanings are the familiar New Orleans tradition; they need not dictate how you combine the shades.

33 Mardi Gras nail ideas
Magnetic cat-eye and shimmer
- Purple cat-eye with a gold center line. Add a fine vertical gold stripe over the magnetic shimmer for a crisp, simple accent.
- Emerald cat-eye half-moons. Keep the green magnetic finish across the nail and define the cuticle curve with a gold half-moon.
- Gold magnetic shimmer over violet. Use a deep violet base and place gold magnetic polish as a luminous accent layer.
- Watercolor halo around cat-eye. Center a cat-eye highlight and soften its edges with a wash of purple or green watercolor.
- Gold cat-eye accent set. Give one nail the gold magnetic finish; paint the remaining nails solid purple and green.
- Green base with a purple diagonal cat-eye. Contrast a green ground with a slanted violet magnetic highlight.
- Emerald cat-eye accents on purple. Keep the set predominantly purple and add green magnetic shimmer to two nails.
- Green cat-eye with gold foil. Place a few gold foil flakes over one green magnetic accent nail.
Watercolor, ombré and painterly details
- Purple and green watercolor clouds. Blur soft patches of both colors and add a small gold foil accent.
- Three-color watercolor on sheer polish. Let purple, green and gold washes overlap over a translucent base.
- Purple-to-green watercolor ombré. Blend the two shades on a feature nail and keep the other nails simple, with one gold accent.
- Watercolor feather or plume. Paint a loose plume motif in purple and green, then pick out a few details in gold.
- Lilac blooms with gold pinpoints. Create soft lilac watercolor flowers and use tiny gold dots as their centers.
- Green watercolor feature nail. Set one green watercolor nail among mostly purple nails and finish it with a gold gem.
French tips, color blocks and small patterns
- Alternating purple and green French tips. Switch tip colors from nail to nail and outline each smile line in gold.
- Deep-purple tips with gold dots. Add tiny gold dots along the smile line for a minimal celebratory detail.
- Green tips with a purple watercolor fade. Blend violet softly into the green tip rather than making a hard color boundary.
- Gold glitter tips over sheer purple. Keep the base translucent and concentrate glitter at the free edge.
- Mismatched color-blocked set. Assign purple, green and gold to different sections of each nail for a playful mix.
- Purple-and-green checkerboard. Pair the checker pattern with a solid gold accent nail to avoid crowding every nail.
- Fine gold stripes. Paint alternating purple and green bases, then add narrow gold lines for a geometric finish.

Cat-eye polish: use the instructions for your product
Magnetic cat-eye polish contains particles that a magnet shapes while the polish is wet or, for gel, uncured. A wand or styling magnet is therefore part of the effect. Regular magnetic polish and gel cat-eye polish do not share one universal workflow: gel systems may require a compatible UV/LED lamp and curing at specified stages.

Regular magnetic polish
Cirque Colors describes a product-specific method for its regular magnetic polish: build opacity with thin coats, then work one nail at a time with a thicker wet coat and hold the wand over the nail for 30–60 seconds. The maker recommends holding the magnet again after top coat. Those timings are directions for that product, not a universal standard; its page says the polish reaches opacity in two to three coats and that the wand is sold separately. Gel cat-eye polish
Pink Gellac describes moving a magnet over uncured gel while keeping it 3 mm away. ASP’s gel tutorial lists a styling magnet and UV/LED lamp. These are product- and system-specific directions, not interchangeable steps for regular polish. Adding 3D gems without overwhelming the design
Raised embellishments stand out most when the rest of the manicure leaves them room: try one gem-centered nail, a short curved trail or a compact cuticle cluster. OPI’s professional tutorial demonstrates charms and embellishments in a powder/acrylic look, but it does not establish a universal gem adhesive or a home-application method.
