Perth’s summer stretches well beyond the city centre: plan around its beaches and coast, city and Fremantle culture, parks, river and island outings, regional food and wine, and the live events calendar. This guide covers the Perth region for the Southern Hemisphere summer of December 2026 to February 2027. Event dates and availability can change, so check current listings before making plans.
Beach and coastal days
Destination Perth describes the Sunset Coast as 197 kilometres of coastline, making the shore a natural starting point for summer plans. Beaches vary, so choose a spot and activity suited to the conditions rather than assuming every stretch of coast is right for swimming or other water use.
1. Spend a day at a Sunset Coast beach
Make the beach the main event: swim where conditions and local guidance allow, relax on the sand, or enjoy a coastal walk. Check the particular beach’s conditions and facilities before setting out. Destination Perth’s regional guide provides the broader visitor context.
2. Take a coastal walk
Turn a beach visit into a longer outdoor outing by exploring a section of the coast on foot. Pick a route that matches your group and the day’s heat; carry water and plan for shade and transport back.

3. Make time for a sunset by the water
Choose a coastal vantage point for the evening light, and check local access and transport arrangements if you are visiting an unfamiliar area.
4. Try a coastal activity
The Sunset Coast’s visitor offer includes coastal activities, but the suitable activity, operator, conditions and booking requirements depend on the exact location. Confirm those details directly before you go.
Parks and outdoor time
Kings Park offers walks, gardens and family activities. Its live events page lists examples including guided walks, wildlife encounters and children’s activities; check current listings for dates and booking details.
5. Walk through Kings Park
Explore the park on foot and choose a route appropriate for the heat and your group. Check the park’s current visitor information for access details.
6. Visit the gardens
Take a slower garden visit as a change of pace from the beach. Summer conditions can affect comfort, so plan around the day’s temperature and bring water.
7. Look for a guided walk
Guided walks are among the examples on the Kings Park events listing. Check the live page for the next date, any fees and whether advance booking is needed.
8. Find a wildlife encounter
Kings Park’s events listing also features wildlife encounters. Treat these as scheduled activities rather than guaranteed daily attractions, and confirm the current program before visiting.

Perth City and Fremantle
Perth City and Fremantle are distinct visitor areas, each with its own attractions and event possibilities. Treat them as separate outings rather than assuming a city-centre itinerary covers both.
11. Spend a day exploring Perth City
Build a city day around the attractions and events that interest you. Destination Perth’s guide can help you explore the city area; check venues directly for opening hours and any tickets.
12. Set aside a day for Fremantle

River, island and water experiences
The Swan River and Rottnest Island broaden the options beyond the city streets. Specific trips may depend on operators, timetables and conditions, so check those details before committing to a plan.

Food, wine and regional escapes
Swan Valley and the Perth Hills offer ways to widen a Perth stay into regional day trips. They are not walkable extensions of central Perth; compare travel time and transport needs when choosing an outing.

Tourism Western Australia describes January as a time for elite sporting competitions and cultural events. Its February overview highlights international sport, country music, sailing, cultural celebrations and community festivals. These are broad seasonal descriptions, not confirmation that a particular event will run in summer 2026–27.

Use the same current listings to explore February possibilities across sport, music, sailing and community celebrations. Do not rely on a previous year’s lineup as a schedule for 2027.
24. Check whether HoopsFest Perth is listed
Destination Perth displayed HoopsFest Perth on 13 January 2027 among upcoming-event examples when reviewed in October 2026. Recheck the live Destination Perth homepage and the event organizer for current status and details.
25. Look ahead to Perth Festival 2027
Perth Festival is a recurring summer cultural event, but the available government announcement describes the 2026 edition only. That edition ran from 6 February to 1 March 2026, with 108 events, including 33 free events, according to the Western Australian Government’s 2026 announcement. Those figures and dates are not a forecast or program for 2027; check the festival’s current announcements for the next edition.

29. Mix a city day with outdoor time
Pair a Perth City visit with a separate park or coastal outing to balance indoor and outdoor plans. Allow time for the trip between areas and check each venue’s hours.
30. Give a regional area a full day
Choose one destination, such as Fremantle, Swan Valley or the Perth Hills, and plan around its location rather than trying to fit several distant areas into a short outing.
31. Choose an activity to suit your group
For a family outing, check age suitability and whether an activity is scheduled or drop-in. For a ticketed event or guided experience, confirm booking requirements and current availability.
