This editorial list focuses on comic-book abilities supported by DC and Marvel material, and ranks them by conceptual originality, distinctive mechanics, constraints, and story potential—not by raw strength. The available sources substantiate a handful of examples, not 30 separate powers, so this article does not invent entries to meet the headline’s number.
How this ranking works
“Unique” is a judgment, not a measurable property. Familiar abilities such as strength, flight, speed, and elemental control are less distinctive on their own; a power becomes more compelling when its mechanics, limits, or consequences set it apart. The order below weighs four things: originality, what the ability specifically does, its costs or constraints, and the kinds of story problems it can create.

These are comic-book examples, not a definitive ranking across every fictional universe. A character’s abilities may also vary by continuity or change over time.
The most distinctive sourced superpowers
1. Ambush Bug’s multiversal teleportation
DC describes Doom Patrol member Ambush Bug as able to teleport anywhere in the multiverse. The unusual element is the reach: teleportation is already familiar in comics, but movement across the multiverse expands it into a way of crossing between realities. That scale offers unusual narrative possibilities without making the ability simply another form of fast travel. DC’s Doom Patrol feature presents Ambush Bug among the team’s weirdest members.

2. Multiple Man’s kinetic-energy duplicates
Marvel’s profile for Jamie Madrox says he creates duplicates of himself through kinetic energy. The trigger gives the power a more specific mechanism than generic cloning, while the duplicates make it possible to divide one person’s activity among multiple bodies. That naturally raises questions about coordination and identity, though those implications are interpretation rather than a separate claim about the power’s rules. Marvel’s Multiple Man profile describes the ability.
3. Gambit’s kinetic-energy manipulation
Gambit’s power is not merely throwing charged objects: Marvel describes him as manipulating kinetic energy and notes an additional application in which a charged object can interfere with telepathic detection. This makes the ability useful in more than direct combat. Its history also matters: Marvel says Gambit lost an enhanced level of power after his battle with New Sun, so that enhanced state should not be treated as a permanent feature of every portrayal. See Marvel’s Gambit profile.

4. Doom Patrol’s personality-linked powers
DC’s feature on the Doom Patrol’s unusual members includes a character with many personalities associated with different powers. The concept connects a change in personality with a change in capability, making the power’s operation inseparable from character and circumstance. The source identifies this as one example within the team rather than a general rule for every member. DC’s feature provides the supporting description.
5. Jaime Reyes’s alien-scarab power array
For Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes), DC describes an alien scarab that grants an array of abilities, including multiple ways to fly and an energy cannon. This is less a single unusual power than a versatile power source: one piece of alien technology supplies several distinct functions. Its variety makes it a useful contrast with abilities built around one tightly defined mechanic. DC’s Blue Beetle feature covers the scarab’s capabilities.

6. Size manipulation with unsettling consequences
Changing size can sound straightforward, but DC’s discussion of unsettling superpowers draws attention to the uncomfortable implications that can accompany size manipulation. The interest lies in the gap between a power’s appealing surface and what using it might entail. The source discusses the ability in that broader context; it does not establish a single universal set of rules for every character who can change size. DC’s unsettling-superpowers feature explores the idea.
7. Heightened senses with a cost to ordinary experience
Greater sensory range is often framed as an advantage, but DC’s article likewise considers the uncomfortable side of heightened senses. A power that supplies more information may also make the character’s experience of the world harder to manage. The article supports that general point, not a specific medical claim or a uniform limitation shared by all fictional characters with enhanced senses. See DC’s discussion of unsettling powers.

Why there are not 30 entries
The headline’s number cannot be responsibly filled from the documented examples available here. Only these seven distinct concepts are supported: adding familiar abilities or naming characters without evidence for their exact mechanics would turn an editorial ranking into guesswork. Nor does either publisher supply an authoritative cross-publisher ranking or a universal definition of “unique.”
For readers comparing powers, the useful distinction is not simply whether an ability looks strange. Ask what triggers it, what it can do beyond its obvious use, what limits or consequences shape it, and how those rules affect the character’s choices. The examples above illustrate why a power’s mechanics and story implications can matter as much as its spectacle.
