There is no definitive, universal ranking of the best thrillers. This list is an editorial watchlist, weighing sustained suspense, filmmaking craft and influence, critical or institutional standing, and range across eras and national cinemas. It includes psychological, crime, political, spy, and survival thrillers; some sit near horror or action, where those genres overlap with suspense.

How this ranking works

The major reference lists answer different questions. The British Film Institute’s 100 essential thrillers is a curated selection, not a ranked universal canon. The American Film Institute’s 100 Years…100 Thrills ranks American films for heart-pounding impact and includes works near horror, action, science fiction, and adventure. Sight and Sound’s Greatest Films of All Time poll considers films across all genres, rather than ranking thrillers specifically.

Those lists help identify candidates and show how institutions value suspense and cinema, but they do not determine the order below. The ranking is a considered mix of tension, cinematic achievement, influence, and variety—not a shared numerical score or a claim of objective consensus. Plot descriptions are kept spoiler-light.

The 30 best thrillers of all time

  1. Vertigo (1958) — Alfred Hitchcock

A former detective becomes entangled in a woman’s mysterious past. Hitchcock turns obsession and uncertainty into an elaborate visual puzzle, making the film’s suspense linger long after any single revelation. Its lasting esteem reaches beyond the thriller genre: it placed 18th in AFI’s American-only 100 Years…100 Thrills ranking.

  2. Psycho (1960) — Alfred Hitchcock

A woman on the run stops at an isolated roadside motel. Hitchcock’s control of perspective, sound, and expectation made this a landmark of screen suspense. AFI ranked it first on its list of the 100 most heart-pounding American movies.

  3. M (1931) — Fritz Lang

A city is gripped by fear as police and criminals search for a child murderer. Lang makes the manhunt a study in collective panic and moral unease, shaping a template for crime thrillers. The BFI includes it among its essential thrillers.

  4. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) — Jonathan Demme

An FBI trainee seeks help from an imprisoned killer to catch another murderer. The film builds tension through a duel of intelligence and shifting power, anchored by precise performances and controlled point of view. AFI placed it fifth in its American thriller ranking.

  5. North by Northwest (1959) — Alfred Hitchcock

An advertising executive is mistaken for a government agent and pursued across the country. Hitchcock makes mistaken identity a vehicle for wit, chase-driven suspense, and iconic set pieces. AFI ranked it fourth; the BFI also includes it in its curated thriller selection.

  6. The Wages of Fear (1953) — Henri-Georges Clouzot

Men take a dangerous job transporting nitroglycerine by truck. The peril accumulates with each stretch of road, making delay and ordinary obstacles feel as threatening as direct danger. The BFI describes it as a suspense film whose tension escalates throughout.

  7. Rear Window (1954) — Alfred Hitchcock

A photographer confined to his apartment watches his neighbors and suspects a crime. The limited viewpoint turns looking into an act of suspense, while the film keeps asking how much can really be known from a distance.

  8. The Third Man (1949) — Carol Reed

An American arrives in postwar Vienna to investigate the death of a friend. The divided city, moral compromises, and searching camera work give this mystery a shadowy political charge and an atmosphere few thrillers have matched.

  9. Chinatown (1974) — Roman Polanski

A private detective’s investigation into an apparent domestic dispute opens onto a larger web of corruption. Its measured reveal of power and consequence makes the film’s noir mystery feel both intimate and systemic.

  10. Oldboy (2003) — Park Chan-wook

A man abruptly released after years of unexplained captivity tries to discover who imprisoned him and why. Park combines kinetic action with psychological torment and a tightly controlled mystery. The BFI includes the film among its essential thrillers.

  11. High and Low (1963) — Akira Kurosawa

A wealthy executive faces a kidnapping crisis that threatens his fortune and reputation. Kurosawa moves from a pressure-cooker moral dilemma into a meticulous police investigation, widening the film’s view of class and justice without losing suspense.

  12. The Conversation (1974) — Francis Ford Coppola

A surveillance expert becomes consumed by a recording he was hired to make. The thriller’s central uncertainty is not simply what was said, but what the listener can safely infer—a quietly unnerving portrait of surveillance and paranoia.

  13. Notorious (1946) — Alfred Hitchcock

A woman is recruited to infiltrate a circle of former Nazis in postwar Brazil. Espionage, romance, and suspicion tighten around a deceptively simple mission, with Hitchcock turning objects and glances into sources of danger.

  14. The 39 Steps (1935) — Alfred Hitchcock

An ordinary man is pulled into a spy conspiracy and forced to flee. Its brisk pace, escalating pursuit, and resourceful hero helped establish a durable model for the man-on-the-run thriller.

  15. The Hitch-Hiker (1953) — Ida Lupino

Two friends pick up a stranger during a road trip and discover they are in the hands of a dangerous criminal. Lupino turns the open road into a confined space of coercion and fear. The BFI’s curated list recognizes it as an essential thriller.

  16. Army of Shadows (1969) — Jean-Pierre Melville

Members of the French Resistance navigate secrecy, betrayal, and capture under occupation. Melville strips espionage suspense of glamour, finding tension in discipline, silence, and the cost of survival.

  17. The Battle of Algiers (1966) — Gillo Pontecorvo

Set during Algeria’s struggle for independence, the film follows revolutionary and colonial forces through an escalating conflict. Its documentary-like immediacy gives political thriller tension a collective, historical scale.

  18. Touch of Evil (1958) — Orson Welles

A border-town investigation pits a Mexican official against a powerful American police captain. Welles uses expressive camerawork and a murky moral landscape to make the question of who is investigating whom part of the suspense.

  19. Diabolique (1955) — Henri-Georges Clouzot

Two women conspire against an abusive man at a boarding school. Clouzot builds dread from a carefully controlled mystery and an atmosphere of distrust; it is best approached without knowing what follows.

  20. Memories of Murder (2003) — Bong Joon-ho

  21. Le Samouraï (1967) — Jean-Pierre Melville

A disciplined contract killer finds himself pursued after a job goes wrong. Melville’s spare style makes routine, silence, and small deviations carry the suspense, while the film’s cool precision has influenced generations of crime cinema.

  22. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) — John Frankenheimer

A returning soldier’s troubling memories point toward a conspiracy with national consequences. The film fuses political paranoia with psychological suspense, making uncertainty about memory and control central to its threat.

  23. Jaws (1975) — Steven Spielberg

A small coastal town confronts a predator in its waters. Spielberg’s command of anticipation turns an unseen threat into a source of mounting dread. The film also illustrates why thriller lists can overlap with horror and adventure.

  24. Blue Velvet (1986) — David Lynch

A young man’s discovery leads him into a hidden world of violence beneath a seemingly ordinary town. Lynch makes the familiar unsettling, using tonal disorientation and menace to turn investigation into psychological suspense.

  25. The Vanishing (1988) — George Sluizer

After his partner disappears during a trip, a man cannot let go of the search. The film’s calm surface and relentless focus on uncertainty create a distinctive psychological chill. Its impact depends on preserving its carefully built mystery.

  26. Thief (1981) — Michael Mann

  27. Run Lola Run (1998) — Tom Tykwer

A woman has minutes to find money and save her boyfriend. Repeated variations turn a simple race against time into a propulsive experiment in chance, momentum, and cinematic form.

  28. City of God (2002) — Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund

  29. Victoria (2015) — Sebastian Schipper

A young woman’s night in Berlin takes a dangerous turn after she meets a group of men. The BFI identifies the film’s one-shot approach as a distinctive source of tension: the unbroken-feeling progression makes events seem to unfold in real time.

Why no one list can settle the thriller canon

Institutional rankings are useful lenses, not interchangeable verdicts. AFI’s list is explicitly limited to American movies and emphasizes heart-pounding impact; BFI’s selection takes a broader international view but is curated rather than ranked; Sight and Sound asks voters to choose the greatest films across cinema. Its 2022 critics’ poll drew more than 1,600 critics, programmers, curators, academics, and archivists, who voted for 3,800 different films. Almost 600 filmmakers voted in the directors’ poll, which covered 1,700 films. These figures measure the breadth of participation and titles considered, not votes for thrillers in particular.

The category itself has porous edges. A political investigation can be a thriller without a chase; a horror or action film can qualify when suspense is central to its effect. That flexibility is why a strong watchlist should make room for different kinds of pressure, not just plot twists or gunfights.

Where to start watching

  • For classic suspense: Psycho, Rear Window, and North by Northwest.
  • For moral and political pressure: The Battle of Algiers, Army of Shadows, and All the President’s Men.
  • For a slow escalation: The Wages of Fear, whose suspense grows out of a dangerous transport job. The BFI lists a 4K restoration on Blu-ray and DVD: The Wages of Fear 4K restoration Blu-ray and DVD.
  • For psychologically disorienting mysteries: Vertigo, Oldboy, or The Vanishing.

In a 2025 retrospective on the 2022 Sight and Sound poll, BFI Editor in Chief Mike Williams encouraged readers to “watch as many of the films as you can.” That is the most productive way to use any ranked list: as a route into films, not a substitute for seeing them.
