This curated guide brings together 30 films about real musicians and music-making lives across genres and eras. The order is a set of recommendations, not a definitive ranking: critics’ lists such as Rotten Tomatoes’ best-reviewed music biopics and Metacritic’s films ranked by Metascore answer a different question.
How to choose a music biopic
Music biopics vary in what they promise. Some trace a career across decades; others concentrate on a formative stretch, a group’s breakthrough, or one artist’s private and public conflicts. They also differ in how closely they follow the historical record and how much the music itself drives the film. The recommendations below reflect those distinctions, along with genre range and distinctive storytelling—not a measured score.
For a broader view of the genre, Rotten Tomatoes’ list spans rock, country, hip-hop, pop and classical biographies. Metacritic’s 2026 feature orders selections by Metascore, its 0–100 measure of professional critics’ reviews. Neither system makes one universal “best” order.

Don Cheadle co-wrote, directed, co-produced and stars as Miles Davis in a film that takes an unconventional approach to the jazz legend. Release-year references differ by market, so the date is given as 2015/2016 rather than treated as a single worldwide release year.

Where the biopic label gets blurry
Not every film about music belongs in a list of musician biographies. A story may center a fictional performer, use a real musician only as inspiration, or focus on backstage life without substantially telling a real artist’s story. The Rose, for example, has a singer described as Janis Joplin-like rather than Janis Joplin herself; Topsy-Turvy is a backstage story, not a music biopic. Round Midnight sits near the boundary as a dual portrait inspired by real jazz figures. These distinctions matter if you are specifically looking for films about documented people rather than music-world fiction.
For a documentary follow-up
If you want musicians speaking in their own voices rather than actors recreating their lives, Becoming Led Zeppelin is a separate next step, not one of the 30 biopics above. Sony Pictures describes the 2025 documentary as exploring the group’s origin story “told in Led Zeppelin’s own words”; it is offered in 4K UHD, Blu-ray and digital editions.
