Choose an instrument the learner is excited to play, then check that it fits their school or lesson options, body, and budget. If they are undecided, arrange a chance to try a few instruments before committing to a purchase.
1. Start with the learner’s interest
Ask what music they enjoy, which sounds catch their attention, and what they would like to do: blow, bow, play keys, pluck strings, or make rhythm. If possible, let them hear instruments played live and try making a sound themselves. The sound and experience matter more than choosing an instrument because it seems impressive or is popular.
Yamaha’s parent guidance says, “Ultimately, your child should play the instrument that they will enjoy the most.” In a 2013 Teaching Music article, NAfME reported educators’ view that “the decision should ultimately rest with the student.” The article also quotes educator Robert Gillespie saying sound is the most important influence; that is an educator’s perspective, not a universal rule or a measured finding. 2. Find out what is available to try
If the learner is choosing for a school band or orchestra, start by asking the music teacher or ensemble director which instruments the program supports and how selection works. Some schools let students explore options; a director may also guide or assign an instrument based on the program’s needs. Yamaha’s parent guide describes these possibilities. Outside school, ask a music teacher or local music retailer about trying instruments. A brief, hands-on trial can reveal whether the learner likes the sound and feels comfortable handling the instrument. Ask for advice specific to the instrument family: the sizing considerations for a violin, viola, or cello do not apply to every other instrument.
3. Check fit and the practical commitment
Before settling on an option, consider how well it suits the learner physically, what guidance and lessons are available, and what it will take to keep the instrument playable. For student violin, viola, and cello, Yamaha recommends paying attention to size, setup, sound, craftsmanship, case protection, and advice from a teacher or dealer. Use qualified guidance to check sizing rather than choosing by appearance or guessing from age alone. These checks are specific to student bowed strings; ask an experienced teacher or retailer what matters for other instruments.

How to rent or buy
Can you rent at first?
Renting can be useful while a beginner is exploring, particularly if a child may need a different instrument or size later. Yamaha describes renting as a way to try an instrument while keeping options open. Buying may suit a learner who has settled on an instrument, but compare the instrument’s condition and quality as well as its initial price. Where do you get the instrument?
A local music retailer may let the learner try instruments, provide instrument-specific fit advice, and explain rental or repair options. A teacher can help assess whether a particular instrument is appropriate.
