The picks are judged by characterization, importance to the story, distinctiveness, and emotional or comic impact—not by an unsupported popularity ranking. Emilia is a half-elf, not a full elf.
1. Frieren — Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Frieren is a mage and an elf who has lived for more than a thousand years. She fought in the hero party that defeated the Demon King, but her story begins with the aftermath of that victory: Himmel’s death prompts her to try to understand humans and the relationships she once took for granted. She travels with Fern and Stark toward Aureole.
That post-adventure premise makes Frieren distinctive. Her long life gives ordinary human milestones a different scale, while the story’s emotional focus is on how she learns to notice their importance. She stands out as a contemplative fantasy lead whose character arc is built around attention, memory, and connection.
2. Emilia — Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World
Emilia is a half-elf and a candidate in the royal selection. Her kind, caring nature matters to her characterization, while her position places her within the story’s political conflict. Calling her a half-elf is important: she belongs on a list of elf characters, but she is not a full elf.
#1 Best Overall

Emilia brings a different kind of tension from Frieren. Her story role connects personal relationships and values to a public contest for power, making her a strong choice for viewers drawn to character drama within a larger fantasy plot.
3. Nephelia (Nephy) — An Archdemon’s Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride
Nephelia, usually called Nephy, is an elf from the northern sacred land. After Zagan tells her that she is needed, she gradually opens up to him. She is also skilled at cooking.

Nephy’s appeal comes from a relationship-centered arc: the story follows her growing ability to trust and express herself. That gives the series a gentler, more intimate contrast with Frieren’s reflective journey and Emilia’s royal-selection role, with emotional development and comedy at the center.
How these characters differ
| Character | Lineage | Story role | Standout appeal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frieren | Elf | Veteran mage on a journey with Fern and Stark | A long-lived lead learning to value human relationships after the adventure is over |
| Emilia | Half-elf | Candidate in the royal selection | A caring character whose personal story intersects with political conflict |
| Nephelia (Nephy) | Elf | Central figure in a relationship-centered fantasy | Gradual emotional openness, with cooking as a signature skill |
Why there is no objective “best”
These picks use characterization, story importance, distinctiveness, and emotional or comic presence as the comparison criteria. Those qualities do not produce a universal score: a viewer who prefers reflective fantasy may favor Frieren, while someone looking for relationship drama or comedy may connect more with Nephy. Emilia offers a different appeal through her place in the royal-selection plot. The best choice depends on which kind of character arc you want to follow.
