Para escoger un instrumento, empieza por el sonido que disfrutas, comprueba que su tamaño y exigencias físicas te resulten cómodos y piensa si quieres tocar por tu cuenta o con otras personas. Después, verifica que puedas probarlo y encontrar clases cerca. No hay una opción universalmente mejor: escuchar y probar dos o tres instrumentos puede ayudarte a decidir.
1. Elige un sonido que te invite a practicar
Piensa en la música que te gusta escuchar y en qué repertorio te imaginas tocando. Un instrumento cuyo sonido te atrae puede darte una razón concreta para volver a practicar. No hay una respuesta objetivamente correcta entre guitarra, teclado, violín, viento o percusión: tu preferencia es un filtro válido.
La guía del Conservatório de Música de Santarém recomienda escuchar música con el instrumento antes de escoger. La Escuela de Música San José también advierte que imponer a un niño un instrumento cuyo sonido no le agrada difícilmente alimentará su interés.
2. Comprueba el tamaño y las exigencias físicas
Antes de decidir, comprueba si puedes sostener el instrumento, alcanzar sus posiciones y adoptar una postura cómoda. Si estás eligiendo para un niño, o necesitas una escala física distinta, pregunta por tamaños adecuados y prueba el ajuste con un docente o en una tienda especializada.

Algunos instrumentos de cuerda tienen tamaños fraccionados. La tuba, el fagote y el acordeón completo pueden requerir más cuerpo; en algunos casos existen versiones reducidas. 3. Decide si quieres tocar solo o en grupo
Piensa en la experiencia musical que buscas: tocar melodías y acompañamientos por tu cuenta, o formar parte de un conjunto. La guía de Santarém señala que el piano, el órgano, el acordeón y la guitarra pueden asumir tanto melodía como armonía; también describe los vientos y las cuerdas frotadas en contextos como bandas, orquestas y cuartetos.
