This is a look back at three films BGR highlighted ahead of April 2024: Monkey Man, Civil War and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. BGR reported their U.S. release dates as April 5, 12 and 19, respectively. The dates and “most anticipated” label belong to that 2024 preview, not a current release calendar or a verified ranking of audience demand.
What were the three April 2024 picks?
BGR’s March 20, 2024 article selected the films below as April highlights, drawing on Rotten Tomatoes’ anticipated-movies list. The article does not establish a ranking method or comparable audience-demand data, so “most anticipated” is best understood as its editorial framing.
| Film | Date reported by BGR | Genre and premise |
|---|---|---|
| Monkey Man | April 5, 2024 | Revenge action: a low-wage worker in Mumbai turns against criminal and elite forces. |
| Civil War | April 12, 2024 | Political dystopian thriller: war journalists travel through a fractured United States to interview the president before rebel forces reach the capital. |
| The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare | April 19, 2024 | World War II action-comedy about an unconventional British operation, inspired by true events. |
These are the dates and descriptions reported in BGR’s March 2024 preview; release dates may vary by territory.
How do the films differ?
Monkey Man: revenge action
Dev Patel’s directorial debut follows Kid, an ex-con working low-wage jobs in Mumbai who takes on powerful criminal and elite forces. BGR compared its action premise to John Wick. Choose this one if a personal revenge story and action are the draw.

Civil War: a journalist’s journey through a divided country
Alex Garland’s film follows a group of war journalists traveling through a fractured United States in an effort to interview the president before rebel forces reach the capital. The premise centers on political conflict and the journalists’ passage through it, rather than offering a conventional account of a real historical war. BGR quoted Garland at an SXSW panel: “America has an internal concept in its exceptionalism that means it feels it’s immune to some kinds of problems,” and “One of the things history shows us is that nobody is immune. Nobody is exceptional.”
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: wartime action-comedy
Guy Ritchie directed this World War II story about an unconventional British operation. The official film site describes it as an action-comedy based on recently declassified War Department files and inspired by true events; Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson are among the cast. Its historical setting and comic-action approach distinguish it from the other two picks.
