28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is the fourth film in the 28 Days Later franchise and the second entry in a new trilogy that began with 28 Years Later (2025). Its story picks up directly after that film, following Dr. Ian Kelson and Spike as dangers emerge from both the infected and other survivors.
What is 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple about?
The spoiler-light premise follows Dr. Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), a scientist studying the long-term effects of the Rage Virus, and Spike (Alfie Williams), a young boy trying to navigate an unstable world. Sony’s U.S. synopsis says Kelson makes a discovery with the potential to change the world, while Spike’s encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) turns into a nightmare. Sony’s UK synopsis describes Kelson entering a shocking new relationship with potentially world-changing consequences. Sony Pictures’ U.S. film page and its official FAQ provide the character and story details.

Sony frames the conflict as more than a struggle against infected people: the survivors’ capacity for cruelty may be as disturbing as the virus. In a franchise feature, the studio also highlights fear, moral ambiguity, compassion and survival. These are Sony’s descriptions of the film’s themes, not an independent critical assessment.
Is it a sequel to 28 Years Later?
Yes. Sony identifies The Bone Temple as the fourth film in the 28 Days Later franchise and the second installment in a new trilogy following 28 Years Later (2025). Its FAQ says the story continues directly after the preceding film, decades after the original Rage Virus outbreak. It is therefore a direct narrative continuation as well as the next chapter in the franchise.

- Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
How long is the movie, and when did it release?
Sony Pictures United Kingdom lists a runtime of 109 minutes and a UK release date of 3 March 2026 on its UK film page. Those figures are specific to the UK listing. Sony’s U.S. page identifies the film as a 2026 release but does not state a U.S. theatrical date, so the UK date should not be treated as a worldwide release date.
