Spoilers for the ending of 28 Years Later. Jimmy Crystal, the adult leader who appears with the Jimmies in the final scene, is the same character glimpsed as a child in the film’s opening. Jack O’Connell plays him. The ending brings Spike into Jimmy’s orbit after Spike leaves Holy Island, turning the film’s closing moments into a handoff to a new threat as well as a callback to its opening.
How does 28 Years Later end?
After his mother’s death, Spike chooses to leave Holy Island alone. His journey does not end in isolation: he encounters a coordinated group of survivors called the Jimmies, led by Jimmy Crystal. Their bright tracksuits, jewelry and parkour-like movement make the group’s entrance an abrupt tonal shift from the film’s family-centered story. TIME’s account of the ending describes the group’s arrival and the clues that precede it.

The final scene is connected to the opening rather than introducing a wholly unrelated figure. A boy named Jimmy survives the initial outbreak; years later, the adult Jimmy appears as the group’s leader. Earlier clues include an infected man with Jimmy’s name carved into his flesh and a wall inscription. Together, they foreshadow the final encounter.
Who are the Jimmies, and what do they believe?
The Jimmies are more than a rescue party. In its official FAQ for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Sony describes them as a deadly survivor faction led by Jimmy Crystal. It says Jimmy claims to be the son of Old Nick and presents himself as destined to rule after the Rage Virus. The group follows his ideology through a hierarchy shaped by belief, fear and power. This is Sony’s sequel-era framing of the faction, not a full explanation delivered in the first film. Sony’s official FAQ for The Bone Temple

- Decades after the rage virus outbreak, survivors live in isolation. When one leaves his ruthlessly quarantined island sanctuary, he uncovers haunting secrets and mutations in both the infected and the remaining humans. From director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland comes a bold return to the world of 28 Days Later.
What does the ending set up?
The coda shifts Spike’s story from a solitary journey toward a dangerous new community. Sony says The Bone Temple continues directly after the events of 28 Years Later and names both Spike and Jimmy Crystal among its central characters. That makes the ending a direct story handoff: it introduces the Jimmies as a human threat alongside the infected. The scene alone does not explain what Jimmy ultimately wants from Spike or spell out the faction’s beliefs in full.
Does Jimmy Crystal allude to Jimmy Savile?
The Jimmies’ appearance evokes Jimmy Savile, a notorious British television personality. It is best understood as a disturbing visual and cultural allusion, not as a claim that the fictional Jimmy Crystal is literally Savile. The available coverage does not establish a direct statement from Danny Boyle or Alex Garland explaining the specific styling or its intended meaning. TIME’s interview with Boyle discusses British context and the story’s wider reflection on societies after institutional failure, but does not settle the precise intention behind Jimmy’s costume or cult. - Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
Why does the film call them “infected”?
Director Danny Boyle distinguishes the film’s infected from undead zombies: “We had this thing about, ‘No, they’re not zombies. They’re infected,’” he told TIME. He said they behave differently physically, are not undead, and can die. In the film’s setting, the UK remains quarantined decades after the Rage Virus outbreak; Spike lives on Holy Island, which is joined to the mainland by a tidal causeway. “Infected” follows Boyle’s terminology, although viewers may also search for the ending using the familiar word “zombies.”
