What are some fun facts about Valentine’s Day? The most surprising answer is that its romantic origin is much less certain than the later history of cards and chocolate. Here are 25 carefully qualified facts, from the disputed early stories to customs that took shape in Britain and the United States.

Valentine’s Day’s beginnings are murky

1. We can’t confidently identify the original St. Valentine

Valentine’s Day honors a Christian martyr, but the identity and biography of the Valentine behind the feast day are uncertain. Early traditions refer to martyrs with that name; they do not establish one definitive life story. Smithsonian Magazine’s history of the holiday outlines the uncertainty.

2. A direct line from Lupercalia to Valentine’s Day has not been proved

Lupercalia was a Roman mid-February festival, and later accounts have connected it to Valentine’s Day. But Smithsonian says there is no evidence Pope Gelasius deliberately replaced Lupercalia with a celebration of St. Valentine. Treat the replacement story as speculation, not settled history.

3. The familiar secret-wedding story is a legend, not a confirmed biography

A popular tale says a priest named Valentine secretly married couples against Emperor Claudius II’s orders. The available historical account does not establish that story as fact, so it belongs in the category of later legend rather than reliable biography.

4. The feast and its romantic reputation emerged at different times

The feast of St. Valentine existed before the holiday became associated with courtship. Smithsonian’s account places the romantic connection centuries later, in medieval literary culture. That gap is one reason a neat, single origin story is misleading.

Medieval writing helped make Valentine’s Day romantic

5. Geoffrey Chaucer is an early literary link between Valentine’s Day and romance

Smithsonian points to Chaucer’s 14th-century poem Parlement of Foules as an early association between St. Valentine’s day and birds choosing mates. It is evidence of a literary connection, not proof that Chaucer invented every modern Valentine custom.

6. Chaucer’s birds gather to choose their mates

In a modernized spelling, the poem says: “For this was on seynt Volantynys day. Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.” The image of birds pairing off helped give the day a courtship theme.

7. The poem’s spelling looks unfamiliar to modern readers

Chaucer wrote “Volantynys” in the cited lines, an example of how the name appeared in Middle English. The spelling is a small reminder that the holiday’s romantic associations took shape in a very different linguistic world.

8. February’s birds supplied a vivid image for courtship

The bird-pairing idea made seasonal imagery part of the romantic story. Smithsonian describes this literary connection; it should not be mistaken for evidence that people everywhere already celebrated February 14 with the same customs.

Letters and cards turned the holiday into a written tradition

9. Hallmark identifies a 1415 letter as the oldest known Valentine

Hallmark’s history page identifies a letter written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orléans, to his wife as the oldest known Valentine. That identification comes from a greeting-card company’s historical account, so it is best attributed to Hallmark rather than stated as an unqualified consensus. Hallmark’s company history gives its account.

10. The duke wrote while imprisoned in the Tower of London

According to Hallmark, Charles wrote the letter to his wife while he was held in the Tower of London. A message sent from captivity makes for a striking early example of Valentine correspondence, even though the “oldest known” label should remain attributed to the company.

11. One-penny postage helped cards catch on in Britain

The National Park Service says Valentine cards became popular in Britain in the early 1800s, helped by standardized postage that cost one penny per card. Lower, predictable postage made sending a brief message more accessible. The National Park Service’s history of Valentine cards describes the change.

12. U.S. Valentine cards grew popular from the 1840s

The card custom was not initially widespread in the United States. The National Park Service traces its growth from the 1840s, when it began spreading from New York to other cities and rural communities.

13. The NPS calls the U.S. tradition almost 200 years old

The National Park Service writes: “Love it or hate it, sending Valentine’s Day cards has been a holiday tradition in the United States for almost 200 years!” The statement refers to the U.S. card tradition described on its page, not to a universal history of Valentine’s Day.

14. Historic cards could be earnest—and emphatic

A card image credited by the NPS to the Library of Congress includes the line: “So strong’s the flame of love for thee that in my heart doth burn, this world to me were paradise didst thou but love me in return.” Its dramatic appeal shows that the language of romantic cards could be much more direct than a simple greeting.

15. Hallmark entered the Valentine postcard business in 1910

Hallmark says its founder, J.C. Hall, began selling Valentine postcards in 1910. The company says its branded Valentine cards reached stores in 1916, several years later. Those dates come from Hallmark’s own company history.

16. Handmade and teasing cards belong to the tradition, too

Associated Press reporting describes handmade and humorous or teasing Valentine cards alongside earnest romantic messages. The day’s written tradition has never been limited to solemn declarations of love. The Associated Press account also quotes American Folk Art Museum curator Emelie Gevalt saying, “By the 18th century, we start to see something that really begins to resemble modern Valentine’s cards.”

Chocolate became part of the commercial holiday

17. Cadbury’s decorated heart-shaped boxes date to 1861

Smithsonian reports that Richard Cadbury began decorating heart-shaped chocolate boxes with Cupids and rosebuds in 1861. This is a documented milestone in the gift box’s Valentine history—not proof that Cadbury invented all Valentine chocolate.

18. The box itself could become a keepsake

After the chocolates were gone, an attractive box could be reused for mementos such as love letters. The packaging offered a second life beyond the edible gift, helping turn the heart-shaped box into part of the holiday’s symbolism.

19. Chocolate followed the romantic association rather than starting it

The medieval literary link between Valentine’s Day and romance predates Cadbury’s decorated boxes by centuries. The chocolate-box story is therefore part of the later commercialization of an already romantic holiday.

20. Hershey’s Kisses entered production in 1907

Smithsonian’s chocolate history dates the start of Hershey’s Kisses production to 1907. The familiar sweet arrived well after heart-shaped Valentine boxes had entered the holiday’s commercial story. Smithsonian’s account of Valentine chocolate covers both milestones.

21. The name “Kisses” is linked to the sound of production

In Smithsonian’s telling, the candy’s name refers to the smooching-like sound made during manufacture. This is the publication’s explanation of the name, rather than a claim that the word was coined as a Valentine’s Day reference.

Modern customs and figures need context

22. Valentine’s customs extend beyond couples

A Smithsonian Associates overview describes the holiday’s customs as including exchanges involving children, teachers, and other relationships, as well as romantic partners. That broader practice is not identical everywhere; the historical evidence here is weighted toward Britain and the United States. Smithsonian Associates’ event overview describes this wider range.

23. U.S. Valentine spending reached an estimated $23.9 billion in 2022

The U.S. Census Bureau reported the National Retail Federation’s estimate of $23.9 billion in U.S. Valentine’s Day spending for 2022. It is a dated estimate for that year, not a current annual total. The Census Bureau’s 2023 report provides the figure and its attribution.

24. The U.S. card count is an industry estimate, not a government tally

Associated Press reported Hallmark’s estimate that 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually in the United States, excluding classroom exchanges. That number is a company estimate reported by AP, not a government count. It also leaves out the substantial school-card exchanges that the estimate explicitly excludes.

25. The clearest surprise is how uneven the evidence is

The early religious biography and any direct link to Lupercalia remain uncertain; the medieval literary association is identifiable but does not explain every later custom. By contrast, the history of 19th-century postage, U.S. card growth, and Cadbury’s 1861 boxes can be tied to named institutions and dates. Valentine’s Day has a more complicated history than its familiar legends suggest.
