This retrospective brings together 25 films that drew substantial advance attention or stood out on the year’s release calendar; it is an editorial selection, not a definitive ranking. “Most anticipated” depends on how interest is measured: IMDb put Superman first using user page-view rankings, while a Fandango survey of ticket buyers put Captain America: Brave New World at the top.
How this 25-film selection was chosen
The selection draws first on two different snapshots of audience interest, then widens the lens with titles from Rotten Tomatoes’ release calendar. IMDb announced its list on January 2, 2025, based on movies planned for that year that ranked most consistently with IMDb users during 2024 in its weekly IMDbPro MOVIEmeter rankings, which use page views. Its leader was Superman. That measures attention on IMDb, not a representative public poll or expected quality. IMDb’s 2025 movie list

Fandango released a different top ten on December 11, 2024, after asking more than 9,000 ticket buyers what they were looking forward to in 2025. Captain America: Brave New World led that survey. The two lists overlap, but they are not interchangeable: one tracks page-view interest and the other reports ticket buyers’ stated preferences. Fandango’s survey results
The remaining selections add a broader mix of genres and release periods, rather than pretending the calendars produced a single, objective order. Rotten Tomatoes’ calendar was updated March 2, 2026, and The Numbers provides a retrospective North American release schedule. Neither should be mistaken for a global audience poll. Films that appeared on the IMDb or Fandango lists
These 14 titles featured in at least one of the two published top tens. They are grouped here as a high-interest cohort, not ranked against one another.
Superman
Superman topped IMDb’s list, placing the DC hero’s return at the center of that platform’s 2024 attention measure. It did not lead Fandango’s survey, a useful reminder that platform activity and ticket buyers’ stated anticipation produce different results.
28 Years Later
The return to the world of 28 Days Later appeared on both lists. Its presence alongside superhero and adventure franchises showed that horror was also a prominent part of the year’s advance conversation.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Marvel’s Fantastic Four film made both top tens. The title paired a major comic-book property with the promise of a first step for the team in its new cinematic outing.
Captain America: Brave New World
Fandango’s survey placed this Marvel release first, while IMDb ranked it sixth. The contrast between those positions reflects the lists’ different audiences and methods, not a settled verdict on the film.
Rank #2
- Runtime: 126 minutes
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
This installment featured in both lists: second in Fandango’s survey and tenth on IMDb. Its placement put a long-running action series among the year’s most visible theatrical prospects.
Jurassic World Rebirth
Fandango ranked Jurassic World Rebirth third, and IMDb placed the film sixth. It was another shared pick from a major returning franchise.
How to Train Your Dragon
The live-action How to Train Your Dragon appeared fourth on IMDb’s list. Its selection helped give the IMDb ten a family-adventure entry alongside superhero, science-fiction and action films.

IMDb placed Marvel’s Thunderbolts* fifth. The film’s presence illustrates how strongly franchise titles featured in that platform’s audience-attention rankings.
Snow White
Disney’s Snow White ranked seventh on IMDb. Its place on the list broadened that year’s high-interest group beyond action-led franchises.
Rank #3
- Runtime: 93 minutes
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina
Ballerina, a film set in the John Wick world, ranked fourth in Fandango’s survey. Its inclusion is a reminder that a franchise can extend its audience interest through a related story rather than a direct sequel.
Avatar: Fire and Ash
Fandango’s respondents put Avatar: Fire and Ash sixth. It was one of the survey’s major science-fiction selections, alongside The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Wicked: Part Two
The sequel to Wicked ranked seventh in Fandango’s survey. Its appearance made musical fantasy part of a list otherwise dominated by action, superhero and science-fiction properties.
The Accountant 2
Fandango ranked The Accountant 2 eighth, bringing a returning crime-action character into its top ten.
A Minecraft Movie
IMDb placed A Minecraft Movie ninth. Based on a widely known game property, it represented a different route from comics and long-running film franchises to advance audience attention.
Rank #4

- Region Free Blu-ray edition, fully compatible with Blu-ray players worldwide with no playback restrictions.
- High-definition picture and dynamic surround sound deliver immersive race sequences and cinematic visuals.

Eleven more releases that broadened the slate
Rotten Tomatoes’ calendar adds films that help show the range of 2025 beyond the two audience-interest lists. These are calendar selections, not claims that every title ranked among the year’s most anticipated.
Mickey 17
Mickey 17 brings science fiction into the mix as an adaptation of Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7. Readers curious about the story’s source can look for the novel by title and author; editions and current retail availability can vary. Rotten Tomatoes’ film listing
Sinners
Sinners adds an original horror-thriller entry to a slate with several familiar properties. Its inclusion shows why a franchise-only roundup would give an incomplete picture of the year’s varied releases.
Paddington in Peru
The next Paddington adventure supplied a family-film counterpoint to the year’s darker dramas and action titles.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy
This return to Bridget Jones’s story extended the selection into romantic comedy and drama, genres less visible in either audience top ten.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2
The follow-up to a game-inspired horror hit gave the year another genre sequel, distinct from its superhero and fantasy franchises.
Jay Kelly
Jay Kelly contributes a drama option to a list otherwise weighted toward genre entertainment and established series.
The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants
This animated family release adds a familiar character and a younger-audience option to the selection.
The Housemaid
The Housemaid widens the group with a thriller, another example of the calendar’s genre range beyond blockbuster franchises.

To round out the 25, this selection also includes four calendar titles that complement the year’s mix: Warfare, F1, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and Frankenstein. Together with the eight titles above, they bring the calendar additions to eleven. Their inclusion is editorial, not a claim that either IMDb or Fandango ranked them in its top ten. What the anticipation figures do—and do not—tell us
Fandango’s December 2024 survey reported that 89% of respondents hoped to see more movies in 2025 than in 2024; 53% planned to see more than six films in theaters, and 60% planned to watch movies in a premium format. These were intentions expressed before the year began, not measured attendance results. Fandango’s report said: “89% of ticket-buyers are hoping to see more movies in 2025 than 2024, with 53% saying they’re planning to see more than six films in theaters.” Fandango’s December 2024 survey
