24 Very Short-Lived TV Sitcoms: What Counts—and What the Records Show

“Short-lived” may mean a few aired episodes, one season or a brief schedule run. These documented sitcom examples show why the measure and market matter.

“Short-lived” can mean a series that aired only a few episodes, lasted one season, or ended after a short period on the schedule. Those are not interchangeable measures. The available records here verify several examples, but do not establish the intended 24 titles or support a definitive 24-show list. The most useful way to approach the topic is to separate what is documented from what still needs title-by-title confirmation.

How to measure a sitcom’s run

A reliable list needs one consistent yardstick. Episode counts should refer to the original market’s initial broadcast unless a later airing is explicitly identified; season count is a broader measure and can include a substantial run. Production totals also differ from broadcast totals: an unaired episode may later appear in another country or on home media.

  • Few episodes aired: report the original-market count and say whether later episodes aired elsewhere or at another time.
  • One season: state the season count and include episode totals where verified; one season alone does not establish that a run was exceptionally brief.
  • Short elapsed run: give the original dates and explain the metric rather than treating a quick cancellation as equivalent to a one-episode run.

TVLine’s roundup of quickly canceled shows discusses the distinction between episodes produced and episodes aired, but it is not a sitcom-only catalog: TVLine’s short-lived series roundup.

Documented examples—and why the counts need context

Co-Ed Fever (1979)

Mental Floss reports that CBS aired the sitcom’s premiere in February 1979 and canceled it the following day after poor ratings. The same account says six episodes were produced and that the remaining episodes later aired on Canadian television. That makes it essential to distinguish the US broadcast from the production total and later Canadian broadcasts; describing the series simply as having ended after one episode would omit that context. #1 Best Overall

Police Squad! (1982)

TVLine describes the sitcom as canceled after four episodes, with two remaining episodes broadcast months later. The four-episode figure therefore describes the initial run, not every episode eventually shown. Its story also continued beyond the series through The Naked Gun films. The Tick (2001)

Static on the TV includes the Fox sitcom among shows canceled after one season. That supports using it as a one-season example, but the cited account does not establish an episode total here. A season label should not be converted into a precise episode count without a stronger title-specific record. Static on the TV’s one-season sitcom list.

Rank #2

Get a Life (1990–1992)

TVLine describes the Fox sitcom as running two seasons, so it fits a broad short-lived-by-season-count discussion but not a strict one-season list. TVLine also reports that a complete-series DVD was released in 2012. That is a historical release note, not confirmation of present-day stock or streaming availability. TVLine’s sitcoms canceled too soon roundup.

Better Off Ted (2009–2010)

TVLine says the series ran for two seasons and ended in 2010. It can illustrate a comparatively short run under a broad definition, but it does not belong in a list defined as sitcoms canceled after one season or after only a handful of aired episodes. TVLine’s sitcoms canceled too soon roundup.

Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 (2012–2013)

TVLine reports that ABC pulled the series after 26 episodes. That count is a useful reminder that “short-lived” needs an explicit cutoff: a 26-episode series is not comparable to a sitcom whose premiere was its only initial-market broadcast. TVLine’s sitcoms canceled too soon roundup.

Why an exact 24-title list cannot be established from these records

The title promises 24 sitcoms, but the available references do not identify or verify a complete set of 24 entries. They cover examples drawn from lists with different scopes: quickly canceled television series, comedies canceled after one season, and programs canceled after a single episode. Combining those lists without a shared rule would produce a misleading roundup.

A defensible 24-entry version would need, for every sitcom, a title-specific record of the original network or market, original run dates, episodes produced, episodes aired in the initial market, and the status of any unaired episodes or later broadcasts. Until those details are established, the examples above are documented illustrations—not a ranked or complete list of 24.
