24 is in development, but it has not been greenlit. Showrunner Howard Gordon says Disney has not committed to the project, while Kiefer Sutherland has praised Gordon’s idea and said he would like to return as Jack Bauer. Those comments mark progress—not an approved series, a production start, or a release announcement.
What is the status of the 24 revival?
Howard Gordon, the series’ showrunner and executive producer, described a new project as being developed, but made clear that it remains conditional. In a Deadline interview published by Yahoo News on November 12, 2025, he said, “It’s absolutely in process, there’s something we are developing.” He also said Disney had not committed to it: “They, meaning Disney and such, have not committed to it, so it still is a process.” Gordon characterized the idea as promising but not settled: “This feels like it could be, but it’s not formal, it’s not done.”

That distinction matters: development can involve shaping an idea or written material without the studio ordering a show or film. Gordon’s comments support calling the project in development, not approved or in production. Read Gordon’s interview via Yahoo News.
Is Kiefer Sutherland returning as Jack Bauer?
Sutherland has expressed interest, but the available comments do not establish that he is signed or confirmed to star. In remarks reported by TV Insider on November 13, 2025, from a September interview with Montreal radio host Aaron Rand, Sutherland said, “Howard Gordon has come up with an idea that I like.” He added, “Something has been written. I think it’s really good. I think it’s really strong.” He also said he wanted to close Jack Bauer’s story, while noting that the project still had to go through approval channels.

In January 2026, ScreenRant coverage reported that Sutherland would love to play Bauer again if the revival happened. That reinforces his willingness; it does not change the project’s approval status. Read TV Insider’s account of Sutherland’s comments.
What has—and has not—been established?
| Question | What the reports establish |
|---|---|
| Is there a revival idea? | Yes. Sutherland said Gordon had an idea he liked and that material had been written. |
| Is a project in development? | Yes. Gordon described it as in process and being developed. |
| Has Disney approved it? | No approval is established; Gordon said Disney had not committed as of his November 2025 interview. |
| Is Sutherland confirmed to return? | No. He has expressed interest, but the cited reports do not establish a confirmed attachment. |
| Is there a release date or production start? | Neither is established by these reports. |
The reports also do not confirm a platform, cast beyond the discussion of Sutherland’s possible return, episode count, or whether the eventual project would be a series or a film. No later formal approval or production announcement is established by these sources as of October 8, 2026.

Why Gordon is cautious about bringing the series back
Gordon has said he does not want to revive 24 simply because an opportunity exists. He wants an idea that can sustain the return and do right by both the series and its fans. That creative standard helps explain why “in development” is not the same as a firm commitment: the concept still has to satisfy the people developing it as well as pass through studio approval.

A meaningful status change would be a formal announcement from the studio or the people making the project—such as confirmation of an order, production, cast, format, or release plans. Until then, the clearest account is that Gordon is developing an idea, Sutherland is interested, and Disney’s commitment has not been confirmed in the cited reporting.
