The best ’90s romance movies range from witty meet-cutes to aching period dramas, queer love stories, and romances tangled up in other genres. This is an editorial selection of 24 standout films released from 1990 through 1999, chosen for emotional impact, craft, cultural footprint, and variety—not an official or universal ranking. For a light movie night, start with While You Were Sleeping or The Wedding Singer; for yearning, try Before Sunrise; for a more devastating watch, consider The English Patient or Titanic.

Romance in this decade was not limited to conventional Hollywood rom-coms: these films also look at family expectations, race, class, desire, and the ways love crosses genre boundaries. AFI’s romantic-film guide and Criterion’s 1990s catalog are useful reference points, not definitive rankings of the decade’s best. AFI’s guide to films about love includes romances that also work as comedies, dramas, or action films; Criterion’s 1990s collection likewise reflects curation rather than a complete list. Streaming availability changes by service and region, so check your local catalog before settling on a title.

Which ’90s romance should you watch tonight?

If you want… Try… What to expect
A warm, accessible comedy While You Were Sleeping (1995) or The Wedding Singer (1998) Light romantic comedy, with mistaken identity in the first and nostalgic courtship in the second.
Conversation and slow-burn chemistry Before Sunrise (1995) An intimate, talk-driven encounter rather than a plot-heavy courtship.
A romance with a distinctive cultural setting love jones (1997) or Chungking Express (1994) Love shaped by creative community in Chicago or by urban chance and longing in Hong Kong.
Grand, bittersweet melodrama Titanic (1997) or The English Patient (1996) Large-scale romance with tragedy at its center.
Romance folded into another genre Groundhog Day (1993) or True Romance (1993) Love is central, but one is also a fantasy comedy and the other a violent crime story.
A queer love story and family comedy The Wedding Banquet (1993) A comedy of marriage arrangements, family expectations, and concealed realities.

24 standout ’90s romance movies

1. Pretty Woman (1990)

Director: Garry Marshall. A chance encounter between a wealthy businessman and a woman who works as a sex worker becomes a glossy romantic fantasy. Its appeal is the unabashed fairy-tale scale and the leads’ comic rapport; its class and power dynamics are also part of what makes the romance worth discussing rather than accepting uncritically.

2. Ghost (1990)

Director: Jerry Zucker. After a man is murdered, his presence lingers while the woman he loves faces danger and grief. This supernatural romance mixes tenderness with suspense and comedy, giving its love story an unusually literal passage between life and death.

3. Metropolitan (1990)

Director: Whit Stillman. In Manhattan, young members of the upper-class debutante scene spend the holiday season talking, flirting, and negotiating their uncertain futures. It is a dry, observant alternative to the grand romantic gesture: social manners and class distinctions are as important as attraction.

4. Mermaids (1990)

Director: Richard Benjamin. A free-spirited single mother and her two daughters settle into a new town, where the older daughter begins to imagine a life beyond the family. This is a coming-of-age story with romance in its orbit, more interested in a girl’s changing feelings and complicated family than in a conventional couple’s arc.

5. The Age of Innocence (1993)

Director: Martin Scorsese. In 19th-century New York, a lawyer engaged to one woman is drawn to her unconventional cousin. Scorsese turns social rules, glances, and withheld words into the machinery of a richly detailed, restrained romance. Choose it for longing and period atmosphere, not a breezy happy ending.

6. Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Director: Nora Ephron. A widower’s voice on a radio call-in show catches the attention of a woman across the country, although the two have not met. The film makes distance and anticipation part of the courtship, offering a tender, gently comic fantasy for viewers who enjoy the idea of fate doing some of the matchmaking.

7. Groundhog Day (1993)

Director: Harold Ramis. A cynical TV weatherman finds himself repeating the same day in a small town. Romance is part of a broader fantasy comedy about attention, change, and how one treats other people; the relationship works because the story does not treat love as a prize to be won through a shortcut. AFI includes it in its guide to films exploring love, a useful reminder that ’90s romance often crossed genre lines.

8. True Romance (1993)

Director: Tony Scott. A newly married couple is swept into a dangerous flight from criminals after a violent chain of events. This is not a soft-edged date-night comedy: action, violence, and pop-culture-heavy dialogue surround the central love story. AFI’s guide identifies it as an unexpected romance within a film that belongs just as readily to the crime and action traditions.

9. The Wedding Banquet (1993)

Director: Ang Lee. A gay Taiwanese man in New York agrees to a marriage arrangement with a woman to satisfy his parents, setting off a family visit that makes concealment increasingly difficult. Its comedy comes with real emotional stakes: affection, obligation, and parental expectations do not neatly align. AFI describes it as a romantic comedy involving family expectations, while its queer perspective makes it an essential widening of the decade’s romance canon.

10. Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)

Director: Mike Newell. Across a series of social gatherings, a charming but hesitant Englishman repeatedly encounters an American woman. The film’s ensemble comedy and awkward timing make romance feel less like a straight line than a series of missed and renewed chances. It balances sparkling banter with a genuine awareness that love and loss share the same social world.

11. Chungking Express (1994)

Director: Wong Kar-wai. Two loosely connected stories follow Hong Kong police officers moving through breakups, loneliness, and unexpected attractions. The film replaces tidy romantic plotting with restless city rhythms, pop music, and fleeting encounters. It is a strong pick for viewers who want a love story that feels atmospheric and unconventional rather than neatly resolved.

12. Before Sunrise (1995)

Director: Richard Linklater. Two young travelers meet and spend time together in Vienna, with conversation and the passing night at the heart of the experience. Its romance is built from curiosity and presence, not a parade of plot complications. Criterion includes it in its 1990s catalog; it remains an especially inviting choice when you want intimacy and possibility more than a conventional happily-ever-after.

13. Sense and Sensibility (1995)

Director: Ang Lee. After a family’s financial circumstances change, two sisters face different expectations and prospects in love. Emma Thompson’s adaptation of Jane Austen combines wit, social observation, and restrained emotion, making the romantic payoffs feel earned by the characters’ growth as well as by circumstance.

14. While You Were Sleeping (1995)

Director: Jon Turteltaub. A lonely transit worker is mistaken for the fiancée of a man in a coma and is drawn into the warmth of his family. This is a comfort-watch comedy whose central deception carries a real ethical complication. Its appeal lies in the affectionate ensemble and the heroine’s gradual recognition of what she actually wants.

15. The English Patient (1996)

Director: Anthony Minghella. In the final days of World War II, a nurse cares for a badly burned patient whose memories reveal a consuming affair. This sweeping romantic drama is nonlinear, elegiac, and tragic; its scale and emotional intensity suit a deliberate watch more than a light movie night.

16. Jerry Maguire (1996)

Director: Cameron Crowe. A sports agent’s professional crisis prompts a new start with a small group of colleagues, including a single mother who becomes his partner. The romance is entwined with work, ambition, and self-reinvention, so it is as much about learning how to value people as it is about falling in love.

17. Romeo + Juliet (1996)

Director: Baz Luhrmann. Shakespeare’s doomed young lovers are transplanted into a heightened modern setting, with the original language retained amid contemporary imagery and frenetic style. It is a deliberately theatrical, tragic romance—an energetic choice for viewers who want passion and visual invention, not a happy ending.

18. Titanic (1997)

Director: James Cameron. A young woman from an upper-class family and a working-class artist meet aboard the ill-fated liner. The romance gives a massive historical disaster a personal emotional center, contrasting social constraint with an intoxicating sense of freedom. Its ending is tragic, and the spectacle is part of the film’s design rather than a substitute for the relationship.

19. love jones (1997)

Director: Theodore Witcher. Poet Darius and photographer Nina meet in Chicago’s 1990s Black creative scene, connecting through literature and jazz while testing their own ambivalence about commitment. The setting is not decorative: the film gives its romance a particular artistic community and sense of place. Criterion describes the U.S. film as 109 minutes and lists a director-approved Blu-ray special edition with a 4K restoration, commentary, interviews, and an essay. Criterion’s film page for love jones provides those edition details.

20. My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

Director: P. J. Hogan. When a woman realizes she has feelings for her longtime friend, she tries to disrupt his impending marriage. The film turns the familiar pursuit-of-the-beloved plot inside out: the heroine is not simply rewarded for wanting someone, and the comedy draws force from her selfishness as well as her vulnerability.

21. The Wedding Singer (1998)

Director: Frank Coraci. A wedding singer whose own engagement has collapsed develops feelings for a waitress who is planning her wedding to someone else. The 1980s setting gives the movie a playful soundtrack and look, while its central appeal is the sweet, low-pressure chemistry between two people whose current plans do not fit their feelings.

22. Shakespeare in Love (1998)

Director: John Madden. A fictionalized Shakespeare finds inspiration and romance while working on a new play. This witty period comedy imagines how love and theatrical invention might feed one another, using the stage’s disguises and conventions to complicate the lovers’ choices.

23. You’ve Got Mail (1998)

Director: Nora Ephron. Two business rivals develop a tender correspondence online without knowing each other’s identities. The film’s particular pleasure is the contrast between guarded real-world encounters and openness in private messages; its small-bookshop setting also makes the romance a comedy about changing commercial life.

24. All About My Mother (1999)

Director: Pedro Almodóvar. After a devastating loss, a mother returns to Barcelona and reconnects with people tied to her past, building new bonds along the way. This is not a conventional couple-centered romance, but it belongs on a generous decade list because it treats love, family, identity, and care as expansive forms of attachment. Its emotional territory is intense rather than light.

What counts as a ’90s romance?

Here, the decade means films released from 1990 through 1999 inclusive. Romance is treated as a major thread, not necessarily the only genre a film belongs to: a fantasy, crime film, family drama, or Shakespeare adaptation can also be a romance. “Best” is a matter of judgment, so this selection favors variety of tone, form, perspective, and cultural footprint rather than pretending to settle a universal league table. Neither AFI’s love-themed guide nor Criterion’s decade collection claims to be a complete ranking of ’90s romances.
