“21st Century Philippine Literature Module 1” usually refers to a Grade 11 or 12 learning resource for the DepEd core subject 21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World. The title alone does not identify a single edition. In the DepEd Learning Portal’s listing, the Module 1 PDF asks learners to identify the geographic, linguistic, and ethnic dimensions of Philippine literary history from pre-colonial to contemporary periods. Check the subtitle and issuing division or region on your copy before assuming it has the same lessons as another Module 1.

What Module 1 covers

The DepEd Learning Portal lists a self-learning PDF titled “SHS 21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World Module 1,” published September 30, 2024, for Grade 11 and Grade 12 learners. Its stated objective is to identify the geographic, linguistic, and ethnic dimensions of Philippine literary history from pre-colonial to contemporary periods. View the DepEd Learning Portal record.

That objective provides a useful way to approach the subject: literature is shaped by where it is created, the languages in which it is written or performed, and the communities and histories connected to it. The national curriculum frames the course as appreciation and critical study of literature’s dimensions, genres, elements, structures, contexts, and traditions. It emphasizes the literature of the region where a school is located in relation to writing from other Philippine regions. Read the DepEd curriculum guide.

Why different Module 1 copies may not match

“Module 1” is not enough to identify a particular set of lessons. The DepEd portal listing is one resource; a separate copy hosted by StudyLib carries the subtitle “Understanding the Literary History and Appreciating the 21st Century Literatures of the Philippines.” That copy describes a broader introduction involving regional literature, historical periods, representative writers and texts, analysis, genre comparison, and multimedia adaptation. Those details describe that specific copy, not necessarily every resource bearing the Module 1 label. See the StudyLib-hosted copy.

To identify the version assigned in class, compare its title and subtitle, regional or division attribution, publication date, and stated competencies with the teacher’s instructions or learning portal listing. A school resource index, for example, separates regional literary history from later modules on texts and contexts, creative representation, and adaptation; module sequencing can vary by resource library. See DepEd Marikina’s e-Modules index.

How the module fits the wider subject

The curriculum is regional and comparative, rather than a survey that treats Philippine literature as a single uniform tradition. Learners consider local texts and writers alongside works from other regions, and relate those works to national literary traditions. The official curriculum guide allocates 40 hours to the subject in Quarter I; that is planned instructional time, not a measure of student outcomes.

Across the course, students are expected to interpret literary works through their form and themes and connect meaning to relevant contexts. Depending on the assigned materials, the work can include identifying representative authors and texts, tracing literary periods, comparing genres across periods, and adapting a literary text into another creative form using multimedia. These are broader course aims and activities; they should not all be assumed to appear in every Module 1 edition.

A practical way to study Philippine literary history

When reading a work or preparing a comparison, keep the dimensions distinct, then consider how they interact:

Rank #3
  • Region: Where does the work come from, and what local literary tradition does it represent?
  • Language and ethnic context: What language or languages shape the work, and what community or cultural context is relevant?
  • Historical period: Where does the work fit in the span from pre-colonial to contemporary literature? Use the period labels and evidence given in your assigned materials.
  • Genre and form: What kind of work is it, and how do its structure or conventions affect the reader’s experience?
  • Theme: What ideas or concerns does the work explore, and how are they expressed through its form?
  • Context: What literary, biographical, linguistic, or sociocultural information helps explain the work’s choices and meaning?

For a comparison, use the same questions for each text rather than judging them by different standards. Note similarities and differences in region, language, period, form, and theme, then explain how context helps account for what you observed. The curriculum calls for critical interpretation in terms of form and theme, informed by context and research.

Who should use this module

The DepEd portal identifies its listed PDF for Grade 11 and Grade 12 learners. If you are a student, use the version specified by your teacher; if you are reviewing the subject independently, begin with the portal record and confirm that its stated objective matches your copy. The course is built around regional literary study, so readings and examples may reflect the school’s locality as well as other Philippine regions.
