What happened at the 2025 Tony Awards?
Hamilton reunited for its 10th Broadway anniversary
The original Hamilton company, including creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, reunited for a medley marking the show’s 10th Broadway anniversary. The performance included “My Shot,” “The Schuyler Sisters,” “History Has Its Eyes on You” and “The Room Where It Happens.” The telecast also featured performances from the Best Musical and Best Revival of a Musical nominees.
Cynthia Erivo opened with a new song
Erivo began her first Tony-hosting turn with “Sometimes All You Need Is a Song,” an original number written by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. During the In Memoriam segment, she and Sara Bareilles performed “The Sun Will Come Out” from Annie. Erivo also told the audience, “Broadway is officially back,” as reported by the AP; the remark was her expression about the season, not an independent measure of the industry’s finances.
Harvey Fierstein received a lifetime achievement honor
Harvey Fierstein received a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. He dedicated the award “to the people in the dark,” describing his gratitude to the audience and the importance of live theatre in his acceptance speech, as reported by the AP.
How many people watched the 2025 Tonys?
The Associated Press reported that the CBS telecast averaged 4.85 million viewers, based on Nielsen data, making it the broadcast’s largest audience in six years. For comparison, the 2024 telecast drew 3.53 million viewers according to the same AP report. CBS said the 2025 broadcast audience was up 38% year over year.
CBS also said the ceremony drew its largest Paramount+ streaming audience to date, up 208% from the previous year, according to the AP. CBS did not disclose a streaming viewer count. That percentage describes year-over-year growth, not a total that can be compared directly with the Nielsen broadcast audience.

The eligibility period for the 78th awards ran from April 26, 2024, through April 27, 2025. Legitimate theatrical productions opening during that season in one of 41 eligible Broadway theatres could be considered. An independent committee of 54 theatre professionals selected nominees across 26 competitive categories, and 840 designated Tony voters cast ballots. These are counts of the awards process, not audience figures, as stated in the official nominations announcement.
The Associated Press’ ceremony recap covers the reunion, performances and acceptance moments; its audience report attributes the television figure to Nielsen and the streaming growth claims to CBS.
