Why Emilia Pérez’s 13 nominations stood out
The Associated Press described Emilia Pérez as a Spanish-language film made in France and reported that its 13 nominations set a record for a non-English-language film. It moved past Roma, which had received 10. The AP also noted that only All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land had received more Oscar nominations overall.
The film’s nominations crossed major categories, from Best Picture, directing and original screenplay to lead and supporting performances and two original songs. Director Jacques Audiard said, “This recognition is a celebration of the global world we live in,” in a statement reported by the AP on January 24, 2025.

Both The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez appeared in the Academy’s Best Picture slate; Wicked was also among the 10 nominees. The full lineup was:

- The Substance
- Wicked
The list was published by the Associated Press and included in the Academy’s February 11, 2025 announcement.
How wildfires changed the announcement schedule
The nominations had originally been expected on January 17. After wildfires began in the Los Angeles area on January 7, the Academy extended voting and postponed the announcement twice; it released the nominees on January 23. The Academy later scheduled the 97th Oscars ceremony for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre. These dates describe the 2025 awards calendar, not current viewing information.
The Academy said there were 220 individual nominees across 23 categories, excluding the five country nominees in International Feature Film. That official count covers individual nominees and is different from the film-by-film nomination totals above.
