Before the ceremony, Associated Press writers favored Severance for drama series and The Studio for comedy series, while both AP and the Guardian expected Seth Rogen and Jean Smart to win their comedy lead-acting races. Those were forecasts, not results—and the AP noted that the field had clear favorites but few sure things.
What the 2025 Emmy predictions were about
The ceremony was the 77th Emmy Awards, as designated in the Television Academy’s 2025 nominees-and-winners database. The Academy announced the telecast for Sunday, September 14, 2025, from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. Eastern on CBS, with live and on-demand streaming on Paramount+ announced at the time. Those details describe the event’s 2025 arrangements, not current streaming availability.
In its July 2025 announcement, the Academy reported 27 drama nominations for Severance and 23 comedy nominations for The Studio. It said The Studio tied the single-year comedy-category nomination record set by The Bear in 2024. A large nomination haul showed breadth across categories; it did not guarantee a win in any one of them.
Which series were favored to win?
In its September 9, 2025 preview, the Associated Press (AP) presented forecasts by Alicia Rancilio and Andrew Dalton. Both picked Severance for drama series and The Studio for comedy series. The Guardian’s September 13 predictions also pointed to those two programs as the likely winners in their respective series categories.

The overlap made the shows prominent favorites in the pre-ceremony coverage, but it was not proof of a settled outcome. AP characterized the awards as having “clear favorites but few sure things,” a useful distinction when reading any predictions list: a pundit’s best guess is not a guarantee.
Who did forecasters expect to win in acting?
AP’s Rancilio and Dalton both forecast Seth Rogen to win comedy lead actor and Jean Smart to win comedy lead actress. The Guardian’s September 13 preview also named Rogen and Smart as its predicted winners in those races.

The sources did not present every acting category as a shared consensus. AP’s ten-category forecast included points of disagreement between its two writers, while the Guardian offered its own picks across categories. Their forecasts therefore show both where pundits aligned and where an individual prediction remained uncertain; they should not be mistaken for a single, definitive expert ballot.

The Guardian explicitly separated “Will win” from “Should win” in its September 13, 2025 predictions. The first label described its forecast; the second expressed the writer’s preference. Those answers can match, but they answer different questions: one is a prediction of voters’ choice, the other a judgment about who deserves recognition.

In the Guardian’s forecast, Colin Farrell was its pick to win limited-series lead actor, Michelle Williams its pick for limited-series lead actress, and Last Week Tonight its scripted-variety prediction. Its separate “Should win” selections made clear that the critic’s preferred outcome did not necessarily have to match the predicted one.

How to read the predictions in retrospect
- Keep the date attached. AP published its forecasts on September 9, 2025; the Guardian published its preview on September 13, one day before the telecast.
- Separate nomination momentum from a category pick. Severance’s 27 drama nominations and The Studio’s 23 comedy nominations were Academy-reported totals, while the outlets’ winner selections were editorial forecasts.
- Compare the same kind of claim. A “will win” forecast is not interchangeable with a “should win” preference, and one writer’s prediction is not the same as broad agreement.
- Do not infer final results from a preview. The nomination leaders and pundit favorites described the pre-show race; the Academy’s database is the reference for the event’s nominee and winner records.
