The 81st Golden Globe Awards honored film and television released in 2023. Oppenheimer won motion picture drama, Poor Things took motion picture musical or comedy, and Barbie received the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award. On television, the leading program winners were Succession, The Bear, and Beef.
2024 Golden Globes: the major winners
The ceremony took place on January 7, 2024. The Golden Globes’ official results list the winners for the year ended December 31, 2023; the Associated Press winner list independently corroborated the headline results.
| Category | Winner |
|---|---|
| Motion picture — drama | Oppenheimer |
| Motion picture — musical or comedy | Poor Things |
| Television series — drama | Succession |
| Television series — musical or comedy | The Bear |
| Limited series, anthology series, or motion picture made for television | Beef |
| Cinematic and Box Office Achievement | Barbie |
These are distinct categories, not a single contest between all the film or television titles. In particular, the two film winners came from separate drama and musical-or-comedy races.
How the night was framed
The Associated Press characterized the ceremony as a blend of silliness, serious moments, historical moments, and jokes. It also described the outcome as an early round in the awards-season contest between Barbie and Oppenheimer, with Oppenheimer favored in that round. That is AP’s framing of the night, rather than an official category or a final verdict on the wider awards season.
New awards categories in 2024
The ceremony introduced the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award and a television stand-up comedy category. Barbie won the former. TIME described audience response to the new categories as mixed; that is the outlet’s assessment, not a measured audience result.

The Golden Globes’ official results are the clearest record of the winners. ABC News’ live recap reports on Barbie’s win and remarks by Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, but a specific speech quotation should not be inferred from a recap summary. The official video archive includes clips; it does not, on the information available, establish that the complete 2024 telecast is currently available to stream.
