How Blake Shelton introduced the tribute
Before Aldean performed, Blake Shelton spoke fondly about his friend Keith, according to the Academy’s recap. The tribute paired Shelton’s remarks with a song that had a personal connection for Aldean: he said Keith’s music was among the first he played in clubs early in his career.
In a statement reported by the Associated Press, Aldean also recalled sharing a stage with Keith in Oklahoma the previous year. He said it meant a lot to honor Keith and celebrate his career and legacy.

When and where were the 2024 ACM Awards?
The 59th ACM Awards took place Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, the Dallas Cowboys’ world headquarters. Reba McEntire hosted the two-hour ceremony, which streamed live internationally on Prime Video. The Academy’s advance announcement listed an 8 p.m. ET start time.

Why the tribute mattered
Keith died on February 5, 2024, at age 62, following a stomach cancer diagnosis, according to Good Morning America and the Associated Press. AP reported that Keith had won 14 ACM Awards, including Entertainer of the Year twice. Before the ceremony, ACM CEO Damon Whiteside said the popularity, influence and love for Keith remained immense and that the Academy looked forward to welcoming Keith’s family, AP reported.
