How the 2020 AMAs selected nominees and winners
The American Music Awards said winners were voted entirely by fans. Nominees were selected using fan-interaction measures reflected in Billboard charts: streaming, album and digital song sales, radio airplay, and social activity. Billboard and its data partners, MRC Data and Next Big Sound, tracked those measures from September 27, 2019, through September 24, 2020. Those metrics informed nominee selection; they were not the final vote for winners. The AMA’s November 22, 2020 results announcement describes the voting and measurement process.

Major winners and event context
Dan + Shay, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd each received three awards, according to the AMA’s results release. Bad Bunny, BTS, Doja Cat, and Nicki Minaj each received two. Taylor Swift’s Artist of the Year win was her third of the night; ABC News reported on November 23, 2020, that her career total then reached 32 American Music Awards—the most in AMA history at that time.
The Los Angeles ceremony was hosted by Taraji P. Henson and broadcast on ABC. The AMA release described the event as socially distanced and said the broadcast reached more than 200 countries and territories. These are details of the 2020 event, not a statement about present-day broadcast or replay availability. The official AMA event release and ABC’s October 26, 2020 preview provide the event context.
