These 20 series draw on real people, events, memoirs, reporting, or historical settings—but “based on a true story” does not mean every character or scene is literal. The list is an editorial selection across crime, war, politics, business, religion, sports, and biography, with notes on each show’s real-world anchor and how much it fictionalizes.

How to read a “based on a true story” label

Some series adapt nonfiction accounts or memoirs; others dramatize documented events while combining people into composite characters, or use historical figures as the basis for fictional ones. The distinctions matter, especially when a series portrays crime, trauma, or living memory. Treat the shows below as dramatizations unless you are watching a documentary, and consult the underlying reporting or history for a fuller record.

This is a curated selection, not an objective ranking: the source list does not provide a reproducible scoring method. The order is for browsing, not a claim that one show is definitively better than another.

20 TV shows based on real events, people, or books

1. American Crime Story

This anthology dramatizes high-profile American cases. Its seasons include the O. J. Simpson trial, the murder of Gianni Versace, and the Clinton–Lewinsky scandal. Each season has a different cast and subject, making it a flexible choice if you want one case at a time rather than a long-running single story. The people and events are real, but scene-by-scene accuracy should not be assumed. Best Life’s roundup listed Hulu in 2024; that dated listing does not establish present availability.

2. Band of Brothers

HBO’s 2001 miniseries follows Easy Company, a U.S. Army unit, through its World War II service, from its D-Day parachute operation toward the war’s end. It is based on Stephen E. Ambrose’s nonfiction book of the same name, giving it a direct source-book connection. Choose it for a sustained military story focused on a unit and its members rather than a single battle.

3. Boardwalk Empire

This five-season crime and political drama is set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City and draws on Nelson Johnson’s nonfiction book. Its central figure, Nucky Thompson, is loosely based on a real political boss, not presented as a one-to-one biography. It suits viewers who want an expansive period drama in which political power and organized crime overlap.

4. Chernobyl

The 2019 miniseries dramatizes the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and features Jared Harris as Soviet scientist Valery Legasov. It combines the crisis and its human consequences with dramatized scenes and characters; its reputation for historical detail is not proof that every exchange or event is documented exactly as shown. It is a tense, concentrated watch for viewers interested in institutional failure and a major disaster.

5. The Crown

This six-season drama follows Queen Elizabeth II’s life and reign, with different actors playing the monarch across the series. Its real royal figures and historical settings are rendered through scripted scenes, not documentary evidence or a transcript of private conversations. The long commitment makes it a better fit for viewers who want a sweeping royal and political drama than a short case study.

Rank #2
Jesus Freaks Movie, Christian Drama Based on True Story from 1972, Spiritual Journey Film
  • HISTORICAL DRAMA: Set in 1972 during the Jesus Revolution on a college campus, this faith-based film tells a compelling true story of unexpected romance and spiritual awakening
  • ROMANTIC STORYLINE: Chronicles the relationship between two unlikely companions from different backgrounds who find love while experiencing spiritual transformation
  • SUPERNATURAL ELEMENTS: Features encounters with divine experiences and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, showcasing powerful spiritual moments within the narrative
  • CULTURAL CONFLICT: Portrays the tension between traditional religious establishments and new spiritual movements during a pivotal time in American history
  • PROPHETIC FINALE: Concludes with a forward-looking scene depicting challenges faced by the church, adding a prophetic dimension to the historical narrative

6. Dopesick

Hulu’s limited series examines the opioid epidemic. Many of its characters are composites rather than direct portrayals of single historical people, so it is best understood as a dramatized account of a broader crisis, not a cast of individually interchangeable real-life counterparts. Its subject matter is intense; the focus is on the epidemic and the forces surrounding it.

7. The Dropout

Amanda Seyfried stars as Elizabeth Holmes in this drama about Holmes and Theranos. The central figure and company are real, while the series shapes their history into a scripted narrative. It is a compact option for viewers drawn to business scandals and the rise and collapse of a company.

8. I, Claudius

The BBC’s 1976 miniseries stars Derek Jacobi as Claudius and adapts Robert Graves’s 1934 historical-fiction novel. It is not straightforward biography: its starting point is a literary interpretation of ancient Rome. Watch it as a character-driven historical drama, not as a factual account of every event in the imperial court.

9. Mindhunter

This Netflix crime drama follows the early FBI Behavioral Science Unit and its study of serial killers, including real offenders Ed Kemper and Richard Speck. It mixes real cases and figures with scripted investigators and scenes. The series ended after two seasons, so viewers should expect an unfinished run rather than a complete multi-season resolution.

10. Narcos

This Netflix drama depicts Pablo Escobar, the Medellín Cartel, and efforts by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to pursue them. Actors portray real agents alongside other historical figures. It offers a crime-and-law-enforcement perspective on the subject, but remains a dramatization rather than a documentary reconstruction.

11. The Offer

This Paramount+ series dramatizes the making of The Godfather, not the fictional crime story told in the film itself. Its subject is the film’s production history and the people involved in bringing it to the screen. It is the pick here for viewers more interested in Hollywood and filmmaking than in the story of a historical crime.

12. Unbelievable

This Netflix miniseries is adapted from the 2015 ProPublica and Marshall Project article “An Unbelievable Story of Rape.” It follows a woman accused of falsely reporting rape and a later investigation. Because the story concerns sexual violence and real people, it is a particularly sensitive dramatization; the original reporting provides the fuller journalistic account.

13. Under the Banner of Heaven

Adapted from Jon Krakauer’s book, this Hulu limited series connects fundamentalist Mormon history with a 1984 double murder. Andrew Garfield plays detective Jeb Pyre, a fictional character created for the story. The series blends a real crime and religious history with an invented lead investigator, so it should not be read as a literal record of the investigation.

14. Under the Bridge

This 2024 Hulu series dramatizes the 1997 murder of Reena Virk and adapts Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 book. Its real-world anchor is a specific murder case; its television form necessarily shapes the account into drama. Viewers seeking the underlying account can turn to Godfrey’s book rather than treating the series as a documentary.

15. Unorthodox

This four-episode Netflix miniseries is inspired by Deborah Feldman’s 2012 memoir about leaving an ultra-Orthodox community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It is primarily in Yiddish. “Inspired by” is the important qualification: the series draws on Feldman’s experience but is not presented as a scene-for-scene memoir.

16. Shōgun

The 1980 and 2024 television adaptations draw on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, whose fictionalized characters were shaped by historical figures around the beginning of Japan’s Edo period. Both are historical fiction, not literal accounts. If you want a period epic with historical inspiration rather than a faithful biography, either adaptation may appeal; the 2024 version is the newer one.

17. The Staircase

HBO’s dramatization concerns Kathleen Peterson’s death and the trial of her husband, Michael Peterson. The case was also the subject of an earlier documentary series with the same title. Watching the documentary alongside the scripted drama offers a useful contrast between documentary filmmaking and dramatic interpretation.

18. Waco

This 2018 miniseries dramatizes the 1993 siege involving the Branch Davidians and stars Taylor Kitsch as David Koresh. The event’s human cost and contested history call for care: the series is a dramatic account, not a neutral substitute for historical records. Its subject is exceptionally heavy, making it a poor fit for casual or light viewing.

19. When They See Us

Ava DuVernay’s four-part Netflix miniseries follows the Central Park Five—the five young men wrongfully convicted in connection with the Central Park rape case—and their exoneration. The real people at its center make precise language and chronology especially important; it is a dramatization of a case, not a legal record. Its four-part format offers a focused commitment, but the subject matter is distressing.

20. Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty

HBO’s series dramatizes the Los Angeles Lakers of the 1980s and the people around the team. It is a sports-and-business story built around real players and a real franchise, shaped for television rather than presented as documentary footage. It was canceled after two seasons, so its story does not run to a full conclusion.

Choosing what to watch next

  • For war and catastrophe: try Band of Brothers for a unit-focused World War II story or Chernobyl for a disaster drama.
  • For crime and investigations: consider American Crime Story, Mindhunter, Narcos, Unbelievable, The Staircase, or Under the Bridge, keeping in mind their different relationships to real people and cases.
  • For politics, power, and institutions: The Crown, Boardwalk Empire, Dopesick, and The Dropout range from royal history and Prohibition politics to a public-health crisis and corporate scandal.
  • For shorter commitments: the four-part Unorthodox and When They See Us are concise; Dopesick, The Dropout, and Under the Banner of Heaven are limited series.
  • For historical fiction rather than direct biography: start with I, Claudius or Shōgun, both rooted in fiction that engages with real history.

Where to stream these shows

Streaming catalogs vary by country and change over time. A service named in a 2024 article is not reliable evidence of current availability. JustWatch’s U.S. guide offers filters for service and subscription plan; check the title and your country directly before subscribing or planning a watch. The U.S. guide should not be treated as a catalog for other regions.
