This is a curated memory jogger, not a universal list: what children played with varied by country, age and household. Some dated milestones below come from UK toy-trade records, so they should not be read as a global popularity ranking.
1990s toys that made play feel like an event
1. Game Boy
The monochrome screen, chunky buttons and familiar chiptune turned waiting rooms and car rides into gaming sessions. The Toy Retailers Association’s UK chronology names Game Boy its 1991 Toy of the Year; that is a UK trade-history marker, not a worldwide sales ranking. Toy Retailers Association
2. POGS
Small cardboard discs became a playground competition: stack them, slam the heavier “slammer” down, and see which pieces flipped. The same UK chronology records a POGS craze and Toy of the Year recognition in 1995. Toy Retailers Association
3. Buzz Lightyear
With a space-ranger catchphrase, pop-out wings and buttons to press, Buzz was a toy built to replay the make-believe of Toy Story. The UK trade chronology describes him as a 1996 sensation. Toy Retailers Association

4. Teletubbies
Bright colors, antennae and the screen on each character’s tummy gave these soft figures an instantly recognizable look. The UK trade chronology places Teletubbies among its 1997 toy highlights. Toy Retailers Association
5. Tamagotchi
A small egg-shaped device made looking after a digital pet a recurring task: check in, feed it and keep it company. Bandai dates the first Tamagotchi release to 23 November 1996 in Japan. It has continued through later generations: Bandai says the line reached 100 million units shipped worldwide through the end of July 2025, a company-reported cumulative shipment figure rather than retail sales. 6. Beanie Babies
Soft, palm-sized animals invited collecting as much as cuddling: kids could pick a favorite, trade with friends or keep a tag carefully attached. The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures includes Beanie Babies among the 1990s toy crazes in its retrospective. National Museum of Toys and Miniatures
7. Furby
Part plush, part interactive gadget, Furby blinked, moved and spoke in its own Furbish language. The V&A says the Tiger Electronics toy was released in 1998 and could communicate with another Furby by infrared. The museum reports that more than 40 million were sold during the first three production years. Victoria and Albert Museum

8. Tickle Me Elmo
Squeeze Elmo and he giggled; squeeze him repeatedly and he shook with laughter. The V&A describes the toy’s 1996 shortage-fueled pre-Christmas shopping frenzy. The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures says at least one million were sold that year. Victoria and Albert Museum National Museum of Toys and Miniatures

9. Yo-yos
Few toys made practice so visible: a smooth “walk the dog” or a successful loop-the-loop earned instant attention, while a tangled string sent you back to the start. The UK Toy Retailers Association lists a yo-yo trend in 1998, a reminder that an old-fashioned toy could become a new playground craze. Toy Retailers Association

10. Bratz dolls
With bold makeup, oversized heads and fashion-forward outfits, Bratz offered a distinctly different doll aesthetic. The V&A dates their launch to 2001 and reports more than 125 million dolls sold by 2005. Victoria and Albert Museum
11. Cranium
This party game made a tableful of players draw, sculpt, act, spell or solve clues rather than rely on one kind of trivia. The V&A says its popularity rose around 2000 and reports global sales above 44 million by 2008. Victoria and Albert Museum
12. Bop It!
“Bop it,” “twist it” and “pull it”: the handheld game barked instructions and challenged players to react before the next command. The Strong says it debuted in 1996, combining electronic game play with physical interaction and free play. The Strong National Museum of Play
13. Pokémon playthings
Pokémon crossed between screen and playroom: trading cards could be collected and swapped, while figures and plush made favorite creatures tangible. The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures includes Pokémon among the 1990s crazes in its retrospective. National Museum of Toys and Miniatures

14. Polly Pocket
A compact case that opened into a tiny world made imaginative play portable. The appeal was the reveal: pop it open, arrange the miniature scene and invent a story small enough to fit in a bag.
15. Power Rangers action figures
Color-coded heroes made it easy to assign roles, stage a team-up and act out a battle between school and home. Their play value was in the shared story as much as the figures themselves.

Lightweight and foldable, the scooter turned a short trip outdoors into a chance to cruise, practice balance and meet up with friends. It was a different kind of toy: play happened in motion, not just on the floor or at a table.
17. Yu-Gi-Oh! cards
Decks, duels and card trades gave collecting a competitive structure. The ritual of building a deck and learning what each card could do made the cards both a game and a social currency among players.
18. Zhu Zhu Pets
These battery-powered toy hamsters scurried, squeaked and explored plastic playsets, offering a lively pet-like performance without a real animal. They were a late-2000s entry in the interactive-toy tradition.

19. Building toys
Bricks and construction sets endured across both decades because they could become anything: a spaceship one afternoon, a house the next. Their lasting appeal was the freedom to rebuild rather than follow a single script.
20. Collectible mini-figures and small toys
Small figures and accessories were easy to carry, trade and fold into pretend worlds. Whether lined up on a shelf or brought out at recess, they made collecting part of everyday play.

A toy’s place in childhood depends on where someone grew up, their age, and what their family could buy. Even a dated “Toy of the Year” label reflects a particular record, not proof that every child owned or remembers the item. The Toy Retailers Association describes its chronology as UK-focused and notes that accuracy is not guaranteed for all historical content. Toy Retailers Association
Figures attached to particular toys also measure different things. Bandai’s Tamagotchi total is units shipped worldwide through July 2025; the V&A’s Furby and Bratz figures are sales milestones over specified periods; the Cranium number is a global sales milestone by 2008. They are not directly comparable and do not establish which toy was most popular overall.
