This ranked list follows WatchMojo’s editorial selection, not an objective measure or audience consensus. Spoilers for all 20 films follow.
What makes a teen-movie ending satisfying?
WatchMojo describes its picks as films with “the most gratifying and enjoyable conclusions in adolescent films.” Its ranking is a matter of editorial taste, and the list treats satisfaction broadly: a payoff might resolve a romance, recognize someone who was overlooked, repair a friendship, or deliver justice. That range matters because some endings are bittersweet or morally complicated rather than conventionally happy.
The list below preserves WatchMojo’s order and explains the particular payoff each ending offers. For perspective, Rotten Tomatoes’ 2021 comparison of high-school movies used other measures—including critic and audience scores, box office, memorable moments and characters, and a wildcard. Those measures offer different ways to compare films; they do not establish which ending is most satisfying. Rotten Tomatoes’ high-school-movie comparison.

-
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)
After Charlie’s hospital stay, a tunnel ride with Sam and Patrick gives the ending its lift: he is beginning to embrace life again. The film’s treatment of trauma and mental health makes this a moment of emotional recovery, not a claim that healing is simple or complete.

-
A Cinderella Story (2004)
Austin follows Sam in the rain; meanwhile, Sam discovers her father’s will and begins a new life connected to the diner and Princeton. Romance is only part of the payoff: she also recovers a legacy and a route out of someone else’s control.
-
Cruel Intentions (1999)
Sebastian dies, but Annette exposes Kathryn’s wrongdoing through his diary and leaves with his car and journal. The reversal echoes the film’s opening and delivers a justice payoff, making this a morally complicated ending rather than a happy one.
Why this ranking isn’t a universal verdict
The ranking reflects one publisher’s editorial judgment, not a viewer poll, formal scoring system, or consensus. Its strongest shared idea is that closure can take different forms: a romance resolved, a friendship repaired, a character recognized, or wrongdoing exposed. Those outcomes are not interchangeable, and a tragic ending can still feel emotionally complete.
There is also a historical lens worth keeping in view. In discussing the 1980s American teen-film landscape, BFI’s Nikki Baughan notes that adolescent protagonists were overwhelmingly white, straight, and male. That context helps explain the limits of a canon that includes prominent films from the era; it does not erase what individual films mean to viewers. BFI’s overview of the 1980s teen-film landscape.
