From chasing cheese down a Gloucestershire hill to racing snails in Norfolk, these competitions turn local customs, endurance tests and everyday objects into unforgettable spectacles. This is a selection, not an official ranking: “bizarre” is in the eye of the beholder, and the events range from community traditions to organized sporting contests.
What makes these competitions unusual?
The surprises lie in how varied the challenges are. Some demand speed, balance or teamwork; others revolve around a pancake, a wool sack or a horse collar. The list spans different countries and traditions, so the events are not directly comparable—and the sources do not establish a definitive worldwide top 20.
20 unusual competitions around the world
1. Land diving — Pentecost Island, Vanuatu
In this traditional practice, jumpers leap from high wooden platforms with vines tied around their legs. National Geographic describes it as both a rite of passage and a spectator event. The vine lengths and platform heights are part of the practice; the spectacle should not be reduced to a dare or treated as an invitation to imitate it. National Geographic
2. Medieval football — United Kingdom
In local versions played in places including Ashbourne and Atherstone in England and Jedburgh in Scotland, large groups try to move a ball from one side of town to the other. The rules vary from place to place, making each contest a local event rather than one standardized game. National Geographic

National Geographic
4. Cresta Run skeleton racing — St Moritz, Switzerland
Riders race head-first down a natural ice track in this demanding form of skeleton racing. National Geographic dates the Cresta Run’s origins to 1885. Its appeal is inseparable from the stark contrast between the elegant winter resort setting and the exposed, high-speed descent. National Geographic
5. Face slapping — Russia
Competitors exchange open-handed strikes in a contest built around enduring the blows. It is a violent spectacle, not a sport to try casually: National Geographic’s description supports the basic format, but not a broader claim about safety or medical risk. National Geographic
6. Ear pull — World Eskimo-Indian Olympics, Alaska, United States
Two competitors pull against one another using a piece of sinew looped around an ear. The cited guide describes a best-of-three format, with the ears alternated. The contest belongs to a broader cultural athletic gathering; its name and setting matter as much as its unusual mechanics. National Geographic

National Geographic
8. Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake — Gloucestershire, England
Participants chase a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down Cooper’s Hill. VisitBritain reports that the cheese can reach 70 mph and warns that participation is at one’s own risk. A 2026 Countryfile account says the cheese gets a one-second head start and that the first participant past the finish wins the prize; it does not mean the cheese is guaranteed to be caught. 9. Wife carrying — Finland and North America
The modern event began in Finland in 1992, according to the North American championship organizer, and international competitors were admitted in 1995. Finland’s World Championship takes place in Sonkajärvi. Rules vary: the North American organizer specifies a 254-metre course with two dry obstacles and one water obstacle, and a five-second penalty if a teammate is dropped. The organizer also says World Championship rules require the carried competitor to wear a helmet. North American Wife Carrying Championship / Sunday River Resort
10. World Bog Snorkelling Championships — Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales
Competitors swim lengths of a peat bog while wearing a snorkel and keeping their faces down, using a doggy-paddle style rather than conventional strokes. VisitBritain gives the course as around 110 metres total on one listing and describes a 60-metre swim on another, so those figures should not be treated as a single fixed course specification. The available listings do not establish current equipment rules. VisitBritain · VisitBritain

Tourism listings provide useful leads, but dates are volatile: some entries are scheduled for 2026 or 2027, while others were marked to be confirmed. Course details and rules can also differ between local versions, as the bog-swimming and wife-carrying examples show. Confirm the latest information with event organizers before travelling or entering, and do not assume that a spectator description supplies complete safety or participation requirements.
