These 20 New Year’s Eve party games cover low-prep conversation starters, trivia, creative challenges, active countdown activities, and digital options for family, friend, and hybrid parties.

The best New Year’s Eve party games are short, easy to explain, and flexible enough for guests who want to play intensely, casually, or not at all. Choose two or three from this list rather than scheduling one long activity for the entire night: begin with a conversation game, add a trivia or guessing round, then use an active countdown game as midnight approaches.

Below are 20 ideas organized by preparation, energy, and equipment. Every game can be adapted for alcohol-free participation, mixed ages, different mobility levels, and guests who prefer not to share personal information.

How to choose New Year’s Eve games

  • For almost no preparation: Try Two Truths and a Lie, Would You Rather?, Most Likely To, or the Resolution Guessing Game.
  • For a group that enjoys questions: Use Year-in-Review Trivia, Name That Tune, or a Trivia Showdown.
  • For movement and laughter: Choose Charades, Pictionary, Minute-to-Win-It challenges, or a Mission Hunt.
  • For large or drop-in parties: Bingo, a photo scavenger hunt, and rotating digital games let people join without committing to a full evening.
  • For families and mixed ages: Keep prompts nonalcoholic, offer easy and difficult versions, and use nonalcoholic prizes.
  • For privacy-conscious groups: Make personal questions optional and establish a no-posting rule for photographs.

A good host also leaves room for food, conversation, music, and the countdown. A game that lasts 10 to 20 minutes is often easier to sustain than an elaborate activity that occupies the entire party.

Low-preparation conversation games

1. Resolution Guessing Game

Ask each guest to write one genuine, humorous, or completely fictional resolution on a slip of paper. Collect the slips in a bowl, read them aloud one at a time, and have everyone guess who wrote each one. Give one point for every correct identification.

  • AUTHENTIC VINTAGE COMPONENTS & PLAY: Experience nostalgic gameplay with materials modeled after classic retro editions, including wooden pawns, classic tile sets, vintage-style cards, dice, and full-sized or folding game boards with integrated component storage. (Catch Phrase requires 2 AAA batteries; Taboo requires 2 AA batteries; not included).
  • UNMATCHED GIFT VALUE FOR ALL AGES: Delivers an all-in-one entertainment solution for toddlers to adults (Ages 3+ to 12+). Offering exceptional bundled value, this set makes an unforgettable luxury gift for holiday giving, housewarmings, weddings, or milestones that will be treasured for years.

You need: Paper, pens, and a bowl or container.

Best for: Close friends, families, and reflective gatherings.

Allow anonymous or fictional resolutions. That small rule makes the game more comfortable for guests who do not want to disclose a personal goal. For larger groups, read several resolutions together and let players submit guesses on paper.

2. Prediction Jar

Before midnight, guests write predictions for the coming year. Read them aloud and let the group vote for the funniest, boldest, most plausible, and most unlikely prediction. Seal the entries in a jar or envelope and reopen them at the next New Year’s party.

You need: Paper, pens, and a jar or envelope.

Offer categories such as personal life, travel, sports, culture, and deliberately absurd predictions. Guests can choose a category instead of being pressured to make a personal prediction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Two Truths and a Lie: Year Edition

Each guest states two true things that happened to them during the year and one invented event. Everyone votes on the lie, then the speaker reveals the answer and tells the story behind the true statements.

You need: Nothing.

This works especially well when guests know one another reasonably well. With a large group, divide players into teams or appoint a rotating scorekeeper. A “pass” rule is useful for guests who would rather not discuss private experiences.

4. Most Likely To: New Year’s Edition

Read prompts such as “most likely to travel somewhere unexpected,” “most likely to keep a resolution,” or “most likely to fall asleep before midnight.” Players point, nominate themselves, vote anonymously, or move to a marked side of the room.

You need: A prompt list and optional voting slips.

Keep the prompts affectionate rather than humiliating. Avoid questions about money, health, relationships, employment, or anything that could embarrass a guest. Include a pass option and never make drinking the consequence of a vote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. New Year’s Would You Rather?

Present paired choices involving travel, food, entertainment, imaginary futures, or New Year’s traditions. Guests can move to one side of the room, raise colored cards, or vote in a chat. For a competitive version, award a point to anyone who correctly predicts the majority answer.

You need: A prompt list or slides.

Prepare separate family-friendly and adults-only prompt sets if the group calls for it. Keep the family-friendly set available throughout the party rather than assuming every guest wants the more personal version.

6. Resolution Mad Libs

Write a short story about the coming year and remove key words, leaving blanks for nouns, verbs, adjectives, destinations, foods, and absurd predictions. Ask guests for words without showing them the story, then read the completed version aloud.

You need: Printed templates and pens.

This is a particularly easy choice for children and families. Prepare several templates so late arrivals can join without interrupting the first round.

  • POLYGON: “One of the best party games we’ve ever played.”
  • NYT WIRECUTTER: Featured in “The best board games”
  • Works in groups from 2-12+ people. Great for large parties, offsites, family gatherings, and anywhere you need instant fun.
  • 5 seconds to set up, 1 minute to learn, 30 minutes to play

7. Time Capsule Challenge

Have each guest contribute a note, drawing, photograph, prediction, or small nonperishable item. Before sealing the container, players guess which item belongs to whom or write a question for next year’s group to answer. Label the opening date clearly.

You need: A box or envelope, paper, pens, and optional photographs.

Do not store valuables, identity documents, or anything that could be damaged by long-term storage. This game is especially rewarding for families or friends who meet for New Year’s Eve every year.

Trivia, guessing, and creative games

8. Year-in-Review Trivia

Prepare questions about the past year, mixing entertainment, music, films, sports, news, local events, and personal milestones from the group. Use teams for larger parties, and keep a bonus question or tie-breaker ready.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need: Questions, answer sheets, pens, and an optional timer.

Refresh the questions for the calendar year in which the party occurs. Avoid building the entire game around controversial news or facts that guests may not have followed. A mixture of easy, medium, and personal-but-optional questions keeps the round accessible.

9. New Year’s Charades

Write prompts related to memorable events, songs, films, resolutions, personal moments, and New Year’s traditions. Players act without speaking while teammates guess against a short timer.

You need: Prompt slips, a bowl, and a timer.

Create separate easy and challenging piles so children and adults can play together. Guests with limited mobility can act from a chair, give prompts, or join as guessers; the game does not need to require running or exaggerated movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Taboo: New Year’s Edition

Use the commercial Taboo party game as supplied, or make a homemade New Year’s deck. One clue-giver tries to make teammates guess a target word without saying the forbidden words printed on the card. Teams race against a timer, and using a forbidden word costs the team the point.

You need: The commercial game or homemade cards, a timer, and a score sheet.

The standard Taboo game is listed by Hasbro for four or more players ages 13 and up and includes cards, a squeaker, sand timer, score pad, die, and guide. Do not confuse it with Taboo Uncensored, which Hasbro identifies as an adults-only version for ages 17 and up. Check the edition before using it with teenagers or a mixed-age family.

A homemade deck can use targets such as “midnight,” “fireworks,” “resolution,” “champagne,” “calendar,” and “countdown,” with three to five forbidden clues for each. For alcohol-free play, simply replace drink-related prompts with food, music, travel, or party traditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. New Year’s Pictionary

Players draw resolutions, holiday objects, songs, places visited, or major moments from the year while teammates guess. Run short rounds and permit a pass when a prompt is too difficult, too personal, or inaccessible to draw.

Merchant Ambassador 100 Classic Games Set with 5 Double-Sided Boards

  • Full instructions for every game included
  • The widest set of family games available
  • Fun for children ages and adults alike!
  • Never have another predictable game night!

You need: Paper or a whiteboard, markers, prompt slips, and a timer.

Use large paper or a shared digital whiteboard for a remote gathering. Pairing a confident artist with a guest who prefers guessing can make the game more inclusive.

12. Heads Up! Year-in-Review

One player holds a phone or card above their head while teammates give clues. Create categories for celebrities, songs, films, viral moments, traditions, or events from the year. Rotate the phone-holder frequently so the activity stays quick.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need: The Heads Up! app or a physical prompt deck and a timer.

Keep categories age-appropriate and do not require guests to share personal photographs without permission. This format is best used as a short, energetic activity between longer rounds.

13. Name That Tune: Year Edition

Play a few seconds of songs released or popular during the year. Teams identify the title, artist, or both. Use instrumental versions, humming, or a simple “name the artist” round for an alcohol-free and family-friendly format.

You need: A prepared playlist, music source, speaker, answer sheets, and optional timer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include several genres and age groups instead of relying only on chart hits. You can also add a “song from a guest’s favorite decade” bonus round to broaden the playlist.

14. New Year’s Trivia Showdown

Build a game-show format with categories such as music, films, local memories, food, resolutions, and “guess the host.” Teams answer in rounds, wager points, or save a final answer for a last-round prediction.

You need: A question deck, score sheet, timer, and optional presentation screen.

This differs from ordinary year-in-review trivia because the host can mix factual questions with party-specific prompts. Begin with easy questions, then use a final wager as midnight approaches. Keep the scoring simple enough that the host can continue serving food and welcoming guests.

Active countdown games

15. New Year’s Bingo

Create bingo cards filled with predictions and likely party moments, such as “someone mentions a resolution,” “a song from the year plays,” “someone takes a group photo,” or “a guest talks about travel.” Guests mark squares as events occur; the first completed line wins.

Hasbro Gaming Taboo Classic Game, Party Word Guessing Game for Adults and Teens, Board Game for 4+ Players Ages 13 and Up
  • FAN-FAVORITE TABOO BOARD GAME: It's the classic Taboo game of unspeakable fun with trendy topics for a modern twist
  • AVOID TABOO WORDS: In the Taboo card game for adults, family and teens, race against time as you get teammates to say the Guess word without saying the Taboo words on the cards
  • MODERN AND EXCITING CARD CONTENT: The Taboo word game features fresh cards infused with pop culture, trends, and more -- includes 212 cards with 848 total Guess words for repeat gameplay
  • ONLINE TOOLS ENHANCE GAMEPLAY: Players have the option to use the web-based timer, buzzer & scorepad -- or they can stick with the included sand timer, squeaker, and scorepad
  • GREAT FOR PARTIES AND NIGHTS OUT: Break out this group game for get-togethers and family game nights. It’s a super portable party game for bachelorette parties, road trips, and more. Going to brunch or grabbing a bite with friends? Just take the card box and your smartphone to play on the go

You need: Printed cards, pens or markers, and small prizes.

Mix objective squares with predictions, but do not include squares that require unsafe, embarrassing, or unwanted behavior. Bingo is ideal for drop-in parties because guests can play while eating or talking.

16. Countdown Balloon Pop

Put a harmless challenge or conversation prompt inside each balloon and label the balloons by time. At scheduled intervals, guests pop the next balloon and complete the activity, building toward midnight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need: Balloons, paper slips, a marker, and a cleanup bag.

Do not use balloons around unsupervised young children or guests with latex sensitivity. Envelopes or paper bags make safer substitutes. Keep the prompts optional and avoid challenges involving food allergies, physical risk, or forced disclosure.

17. Photo Scavenger Hunt

Give guests safe photo prompts such as “something sparkly,” “the funniest party detail,” or “a group recreating a pose from the year.” Award points for completing prompts, but make both participation and photo sharing optional.

You need: A prompt list, phones, and an optional timer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Agree on a no-posting rule unless every person pictured gives permission. Do not hide clues in private messages, personal devices, unsafe areas, or rooms that guests should not enter. A non-photo version can ask teams to find objects and show them to the host instead.

18. Minute-to-Win-It Countdown Challenges

Set up one-minute contests such as stacking plastic cups, moving cotton balls with a spoon, transferring candies with chopsticks, or bouncing ping-pong balls into cups. Run several stations and award points by placement.

You need: Plastic cups, cotton balls, spoons, ping-pong balls, bowls, and a timer.

Use lightweight, nonbreakable objects and leave clear walking space. Guests with mobility limitations can be scorekeepers, referees, strategists, or station hosts, or you can adapt each challenge to a seated version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because one timer can support charades, Taboo, trivia, and these challenges, a party game timer is a useful general-purpose supply rather than a purchase needed for only one activity.

19. Midnight Mission Hunt

Hide numbered clues around the party space. Each clue leads to the next and ends with a small prize, group photograph, or final countdown toast. Guests can complete the hunt individually or in teams.

You need: Clue cards, tape, and optional small prizes.

Keep clues away from stairs, candles, breakable objects, private rooms, and areas where food or drinks could spill. For a family version, color-code clues by difficulty and make the final reward a shared activity rather than a prize for only one person.

20. Jackbox Party Pack

For a digital or hybrid party, host a Jackbox game on a visible screen while players use their phones as controllers. Jackbox Party Packs contain multiple games, but player counts vary by title. Many titles also allow audience members to participate or vote even when they are not active players.

You need: A compatible host device, a display, an internet connection, and phones for the players.

A Jackbox Party Pack works well when remote guests are joining by video call or when a large group needs a rotation system. Check the specific game’s active-player limit, audience capacity, content settings, and language before the party. Do not assume that every title supports the same number of players.

For a hybrid gathering, designate one person to operate the host device and another to watch the video call. Ask remote players to join early enough to test audio, screen sharing, and the game room code. Keep a non-digital backup game ready in case the connection fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical New Year’s Eve game schedule

You do not need to play all 20 games. This flexible sequence uses different energy levels and lets guests opt in or out:

  1. As guests arrive: Set out New Year’s Bingo, Would You Rather?, or Two Truths and a Lie.
  2. During the first major gathering: Run the Resolution Guessing Game, Year-in-Review Trivia, or a Trivia Showdown.
  3. When the room needs energy: Switch to Charades, Taboo, Heads Up!, Pictionary, or Minute-to-Win-It challenges.
  4. During the final hour: Use the Prediction Jar, Countdown Balloon Pop, or Midnight Mission Hunt.
  5. After midnight: Open the Time Capsule Challenge, compare predictions, share approved photos, or play a short Jackbox round.

This schedule is a planning recommendation, not a fixed itinerary. Short rounds make it easier to accommodate dinner, conversation, late arrivals, children’s bedtimes, guests who do not drink, and people who prefer to watch rather than compete.

Host checklist: safety, access, and comfort

  • Keep drinking optional. None of these games needs alcohol as a mechanic. Use points, stickers, snacks, small prizes, or bragging rights instead.
  • Check ages and content. Standard Taboo is listed for ages 13 and up; Taboo Uncensored is listed for ages 17 and up. Separate adult-only prompts from family games.
  • Provide alternatives to movement. A guest can draw, referee, keep score, give clues, or answer from a chair.
  • Protect privacy. Personal resolutions, photographs, phone content, and relationship questions should always be optional.
  • Plan for noise. Use written answers, colored cards, or a quieter trivia round if neighbors, sleeping children, or noise-sensitive guests are a concern.
  • Use safe equipment. Prefer plastic cups and lightweight objects. Keep balloons away from young children and people with latex sensitivity.
  • Prepare a backup. Have paper prompts available if a digital game, speaker, internet connection, or screen stops working.

Which New Year’s Eve games work for families?

Resolution Mad Libs, Pictionary, New Year’s Bingo, Prediction Jar, Charades, and Minute-to-Win-It challenges can work well for families when prompts are age-appropriate. Use nonalcoholic prizes and avoid adult-only editions or questions.

New Year’s Bingo works for drop-in participation, while Jackbox can work for digital or hybrid gatherings. Check the individual Jackbox title because active-player and audience limits vary.

The Bottom Line

For most parties, choose one easy arrival game, one structured competition, and one countdown activity. A combination such as New Year’s Bingo, Year-in-Review Trivia, and the Prediction Jar gives guests different ways to participate without turning the evening into a nonstop schedule.
