20 Million Miles to Earth is a 1957 science-fiction monster film directed by Nathan Juran, with Ray Harryhausen credited for its technical effects. After a spacecraft returning from Venus crashes near Sicily, a strange life-form escapes and grows as the story moves toward Rome.

What is 20 Million Miles to Earth about?

A U.S. spacecraft returning from an expedition to Venus crashes off the coast of Sicily. A capsule containing a gelatinous organism reaches shore, and the creature hatches and grows rapidly. As authorities try to contain the danger, the action shifts from the Sicilian coast toward Rome, where the creature takes refuge atop the Coliseum.

The premise turns a spaceflight accident into a creature feature: the threat is not an invading army but a single unfamiliar organism whose growth makes it harder to control. Sony’s official film page summarizes the returning rocket, recovered container, and creature’s growth; the AFI Catalog entry records the Sicily-to-Rome story.

Release, runtime, and production

AFI dates the film’s release to July 1957 and classifies it as a U.S., English-language, black-and-white production. Its catalog records three runtime figures—82, 84, and 86 minutes—so there is no single runtime to quote without identifying a particular source or edition.

Production included location work in Rome in September 1956, followed by U.S. production from October 30 to November 9, 1956. The Rome setting is integral to the final stretch of the story, rather than simply a backdrop for the initial crash near Sicily. These production details and the runtime range are from the AFI Catalog record.

Black-and-white or colorized versions

The original presentation is black and white. A specialist listing for Indicator’s dual-format release in The Wonderful Worlds of Ray Harryhausen, Volume One: 1955–1960 describes both black-and-white and colorized versions, along with supplements. Those details apply to that listed package, not automatically to every disc or digital edition. The edition listing is the basis for the package description.

If choosing a version, check the specific release for its presentation, region compatibility, and included extras. A listing that mentions both versions does not establish that every edition offers the same choice.
