This is an editorial list, weighing story impact, character development, contributions to Green Lantern mythology and cultural recognition—not just ring power. It covers the mantle broadly, from Alan Scott’s distinct Golden Age legacy to the Corps and its many ring-bearers. The order is necessarily debatable, especially among characters whose importance comes from very different eras and kinds of stories.
How this ranking works
“Greatest” is not the same as “most powerful.” A character can rank highly through a defining effect on the mythology, a memorable arc, or a distinctive contribution even without being the strongest ring-wielder. DC’s own pages document characters and milestones, but do not establish an all-time order; independent rankings also apply their own criteria (CBR; Comicon.com). The placements below are editorial judgments, not official DC standings.
The 20 greatest Green Lanterns
1. Hal Jordan
Hal is the defining modern Green Lantern for many readers: a test pilot whose stories helped establish the Corps as a galactic institution. His fall after Coast City was destroyed in 1993 and his eventual return in Green Lantern: Rebirth (2004) make his record unusually consequential. DC’s historical account traces Kyle Rayner’s arrival as the last ring-bearer in the aftermath of Hal’s fall and the events around Green Lantern #50. Hal ranks first for the scale of his influence on the franchise, not because every Lantern story revolves around him.
2. Alan Scott
Alan Scott is the first character to bear the Green Lantern name, debuting in All-American Comics #16 (1940), according to DC’s character profile. His green flame and Justice Society roots belong to a mystical, Golden Age tradition distinct from the later spacefaring Corps. His foundational place in the mantle’s history earns him a top spot even though his origin and powers differ from those of most entries here.

- For kids, fans, and collectors ages 7+
3. John Stewart
John began as a relief or alternate Lantern and grew into a leader whose discipline and architectural eye give his constructs a recognizable character. DC dates his first appearance to 1971 and calls him “DC’s first African American superhero” in its Green Lantern Corps history. His arc helped make the Corps feel broader than a single hero and brought a distinctive voice to its stories.
4. Kyle Rayner
After Hal’s fall, Kyle received the last ring and had to carry the role without the long history or confidence of his predecessors. His identity as an artist shaped his imaginative approach to constructs, a quality DC highlights in its feature on Green Lantern constructs. Kyle’s importance lies in making a new era feel possible while giving the ring a different visual and emotional sensibility.
5. Guy Gardner
Guy was another candidate to receive Abin Sur’s ring, and his abrasive temperament makes him a useful counterpoint to more measured Lanterns. DC’s Guy Gardner profile presents him as unruly but repeatedly capable of proving himself as a hero. His volatile voice and persistence have kept him a distinctive part of the Corps rather than simply another substitute for Hal.
6. Jessica Cruz
Jessica’s place in the franchise comes from a character story that makes fear and courage central rather than incidental. In DC’s 2016 Green Lanterns series, she was paired with Simon Baz, allowing the book to build its feature around two contrasting experiences of the ring. Her ability to work through fear gives the Lantern ideal a particularly personal expression.
Rank #2
- Featuring heroic figures: 2.5” scale Silver as Green Lantern and 5” scale Green Lantern for play and display
- Silver as Green Lantern has 5 points of articulation and Green Lantern has 27 points of articulation for ultimate poseability
- Quintessential pairing of 2 heroic characters
- The perfect gift for fans of DC and Sonic the Hedgehog, plus the hit crossover comic book series!
- Suggested for ages 3 years and up
7. Simon Baz
Simon’s strongest claim is the way he broadened the contemporary cast and worked in tandem with Jessica. Their 2016 series treated them as partners rather than isolated replacements for established heroes, a shift documented in DC’s franchise history. He ranks below Jessica here because his individual legacy is less clearly established in the sources considered for this list, while his contribution to the partnership remains meaningful.
8. Jo Mullein
Jo brings a detective’s perspective to the Lantern role, making investigation and judgment as important as confrontation. DC named her among the leads in a 2021 series feature, which also distinguishes her approach from the familiar Corps template (DC’s series announcement). Her ranking reflects the fresh angle she adds, while recognizing that her place in the longer history is still developing.
9. Keli Quintela
Keli, also known as Teen Lantern, is a younger and less conventional addition to the Green Lantern world. DC’s 2021 series feature notes her unstable weapon, a detail that sets her apart from ring-bearers whose powers follow familiar Corps rules. She earns a place for expanding what a Lantern story can look like, though her body of franchise-defining stories is not yet as extensive as the names above her.
10. Abin Sur
Abin Sur’s most lasting importance is the handoff that begins Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern story: he is the dying alien Lantern whose ring seeks a successor. That origin makes him indispensable to the franchise’s foundation, even if his role is more often remembered through its consequences for Hal than through a long run of stories of his own.

11. Kilowog
Kilowog is one of the Corps’ most recognizable mentors, associated with training new recruits and giving the institution a sense of lived-in history. His value is not simply as a formidable Lantern; he helps stories communicate what it means to join a corps with duties, standards and comrades.
12. Sinestro
Sinestro’s importance comes from opposition: he turns the idea of order enforced through power into a personal and ideological challenge for the Green Lanterns. His long-standing connection to Hal gives the conflict an intimate edge. He is not a hero in the usual sense, but his place in the Lantern mythology is too central to omit from a list of its greatest figures.
13. Arisia
Arisia represents the breadth of the Corps beyond its most frequently spotlighted human members. Her stories help make the Green Lantern Corps feel like an interstellar community rather than a succession of Earth heroes. Her placement recognizes that contribution while reserving the top tier for characters whose franchise-wide impact is more clearly documented here.
14. Soranik Natu
Soranik stands out as a Lantern whose identity and loyalties connect her to the Corps’ complicated history, including its relationship with Sinestro. Her story offers a perspective shaped by duty and inheritance rather than a straightforward hero’s journey. That tension makes her a compelling supporting figure in the wider mythology.

15. Tomar-Re
Tomar-Re is among the classic alien members who give the Corps its scale and variety. His presence reinforces the idea that Green Lantern service is a shared responsibility across many worlds, not merely a human institution with a cosmic backdrop.
16. Ch’p
Ch’p’s small, unusual appearance is a reminder that the Corps’ range is part of its appeal. The character brings a striking contrast to the monumental space-opera setting and helps make the Lantern universe visually and tonally distinct.
17. Mogo
Mogo stretches the notion of a Lantern farther than almost any other member: a living planet whose place in the Corps makes the organization feel genuinely cosmic. The concept itself is a memorable contribution to the mythology, even if Mogo is not typically framed as a conventional lead hero.
18. Larfleeze
Larfleeze is a singular, often comic presence whose possessiveness makes him an unusual foil to the Green Lantern ideal of shared duty. His importance is less about serving as a model Lantern and more about showing how emotionally and morally diverse the wider spectrum of ring-bearers can be.

19. Jade
Jade connects Green Lantern legacy to the Justice Society and to Alan Scott’s family history. Her place highlights that the mantle’s influence extends beyond the Corps’ standard ring-and-sector structure, linking generations of heroes and different traditions within DC’s larger universe.
20. Salaak
Salaak rounds out the list as a dependable Corps veteran and administrator, the kind of figure who makes the institution function between headline-making crises. He is not as central to the franchise as the figures above him, but a ranking of the broader Lantern legacy benefits from recognizing the characters who embody the Corps as a working organization.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why there is no single official order
DC’s histories and character profiles establish appearances, roles and milestones, not a definitive top twenty. The ranking therefore blends documented importance with judgment about character arcs and lasting storytelling value. Another list might place Alan Scott first for historical priority, or elevate a Corps member for a favorite run; those would be different editorial choices, not corrections to a DC canon list.
Where to start reading
For a focused introduction, begin with stories tied to the turning points in this ranking: Alan Scott’s Golden Age debut in All-American Comics #16, the events around Hal Jordan’s fall and Kyle Rayner’s arrival in Green Lantern #50, the 2004 return in Green Lantern: Rebirth, or the 2016 Green Lanterns pairing of Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. These entry points show how the mantle has changed across eras without suggesting that one version replaces all the others.
