There is no authoritative ranking of every horror film released from 2000 through 2025. This curated list instead brings together 20 films that show the genre’s range and achievement: from international vampire stories and claustrophobic cave horror to screenlife scares, social horror, and experimental filmmaking. The ordering is editorial, weighing critical recognition alongside craft, originality, influence, range, and what each film offers a viewer.

How this list is chosen

The available critics’ selections use different time windows and methods, so no single score or source can settle a top twenty. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2000s guide, for example, places Let the Right One In first among its decade choices; its 2020s guide ranks Certified Fresh films by Tomatometer. The BFI’s selections add a different emphasis, discussing formal choices and themes as well as scares. Those guides inform this list, but the order below is this article’s judgment—not a consensus ranking.

The selection gives weight to distinctive direction, performances, tension, formal invention, and cultural resonance, while making room for different national cinemas and subgenres. The evidence is strongest for candidates in the 2000s and 2020–2024; it does not establish a comprehensive basis for ranking 2010–2019 or a settled retrospective view of 2025. For that reason, the list ends in 2024 rather than presenting 2025 placements as final.

The 20 best horror movies of the 21st century

  1. Let the Right One In (2008, Sweden)

Tomas Alfredson’s vampire film makes loneliness and childhood cruelty as unsettling as its supernatural premise. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus says it “reinvigorates the seemingly tired vampire genre by effectively mixing scares with intelligent storytelling.” Its chilly restraint and emotionally complicated bond between its young leads make it an essential international horror film.

    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Get Out (2017, United States)

Jordan Peele turns a visit to a girlfriend’s family into a tightly controlled thriller about race, politeness, and bodily autonomy. Its sharp shifts between discomfort, humor, and fear make its social argument part of the suspense rather than a separate lesson. Rotten Tomatoes’ retrospective identifies it as a key example of socially engaged horror in the genre’s resurgence.

  3. The Descent (2005, United Kingdom)

Neil Marshall’s cave expedition uses darkness, cramped passages, and the geography of the underground to make the setting feel hostile before the creatures fully emerge. The BFI highlights its claustrophobic tension and spatial craft. The U.S. release softened the original’s downbeat ending, so viewers comparing versions should check the edition and territory rather than assume the endings match.

  4. Pan’s Labyrinth (2006, Spain/Mexico)

Guillermo del Toro entwines a child’s dangerous fantasy world with the brutality of postwar Spain. The result moves between fairy-tale imagery and human cruelty without treating either as an escape from the other. Its place among the international standouts in Rotten Tomatoes’ 2000s guide reflects how much the decade’s horror extended beyond Hollywood.

  5. The Babadook (2014, Australia)

Jennifer Kent builds supernatural dread around a mother and son under mounting emotional strain. Rather than relying only on a creature’s appearances, the film lets grief, exhaustion, and a storybook presence press on the same domestic space. Rotten Tomatoes’ retrospective cites it as a low-budget success, and its tightly focused approach helped make it a defining horror film of its decade.

  6. The Host (2006, South Korea)

Bong Joon Ho’s monster movie combines a riverside creature attack with family panic and institutional failure. Its shifts in tone—between spectacle, dark comedy, and grief—keep it from becoming a conventional creature-feature. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2000s selection also underscores the importance of South Korean horror and genre filmmaking to the period’s international range.

  7. His House (2020, United Kingdom)

Remi Weekes places a refugee couple in a new home that becomes a site of supernatural terror and painful memory. The haunting is inseparable from displacement and the pressures of resettlement. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus describes the film as a terrifying treatment of the refugee experience, while its premise gives familiar haunted-house elements a distinct human context.

  8. The Devil’s Backbone (2001, Spain)

Del Toro’s ghost story uses a remote orphanage during the Spanish Civil War to connect childhood fear with the violence adults leave behind. Its atmosphere comes from both the haunting and the damaged world around it. Alongside Pan’s Labyrinth, it shows how Spanish horror could use supernatural storytelling to carry historical weight.

  9. Talk to Me (2022, Australia)

Danny and Michael Philippou give a familiar possession story a contemporary social rhythm: a supernatural game becomes a dangerous performance for peers and cameras. The film’s practical effects and old-fashioned horror foundations were singled out in Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus. Its appeal lies in how quickly a reckless thrill turns into something the characters cannot control.

  10. Session 9 (2001, United States)

Brad Anderson turns an abandoned asylum and a hazardous cleanup job into a slow-burn study of isolation and fraying trust. The BFI highlights the film’s industrial atmosphere: the building feels less like a backdrop than a pressure system bearing down on the workers. It is a strong pick for viewers who value unease that accumulates rather than constant shocks.

  11. Host (2020, United Kingdom)

Rob Savage’s screenlife horror traps its characters in a video call during a séance gone wrong. Its pandemic-era format makes ordinary webcam frames and connection failures part of the film’s grammar. The BFI’s discussion of the title places it among the original horror films of 2020–2024, representing a period when digital communication could be a setting, not merely a prop.

  12. The Innocents (2021, Norway)

Eskil Vogt’s film observes children whose emerging powers turn play and curiosity into something morally dangerous. Its focus on childhood gives the supernatural premise an unsettling intimacy: the adults are often outside the most important exchanges. Both the BFI and Rotten Tomatoes include it among notable recent horror, with the BFI drawing attention to its treatment of childhood power.

  13. May (2002, United States)

Lucky McKee’s offbeat film recasts the Frankenstein idea through a lonely young woman who struggles to connect with other people. The BFI identifies it as a female-centered variation on the classic creation story. Its blend of awkwardness, sympathy, and grotesquerie gives it a different emotional texture from more familiar monster films.

  14. Nope (2022, United States)

Jordan Peele uses the spectacle of an unexplained threat to ask who gets to make images, who profits from them, and what it means to turn danger into entertainment. The BFI points to the film’s attention to race and the history of image-making. Its scale and visual ambition make it a useful example of horror working through spectacle as well as fear.

  15. The Empty Man (2020, United States)

David Prior’s film moves from a chilling opening into a story of urban legend, investigation, and cosmic horror. Its shifting scale can feel deliberately disorienting, but that instability is part of its appeal for viewers drawn to paranoia and the unknowable. The BFI’s discussion treats it as one of the original recent titles pushing beyond straightforward supernatural formulas.

  16. Censor (2021, United Kingdom)

Prano Bailey-Bond’s period horror follows a film censor whose work begins to blur with a personal search. The BFI highlights its engagement with censorship and memory. Rather than simply revisiting old horror aesthetics, it turns the policing of images into a source of psychological unease.

  17. Bug (2006, United States)

William Friedkin’s chamber piece confines much of its paranoia to a motel room, where two people’s suspicions feed on one another. The BFI singles it out as a study of paranoia. Its small scale is the point: the tightening focus makes uncertainty and intimacy increasingly difficult to separate.

  18. Skinamarink (2022, Canada)

Kyle Edward Ball’s experimental film uses partial views, darkness, and long stretches of atmosphere to evoke a child’s fear inside a house that no longer feels safe. The BFI includes it among recent original horror and discusses its experimental atmosphere. It is a deliberately demanding choice, best suited to viewers willing to sit with ambiguity instead of expecting a fast-moving plot.

  19. Inside (2007, France)

Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s home-invasion horror is a confrontational entry from France’s intense strain of 2000s genre filmmaking. The BFI’s selection emphasizes its home-invasion premise. This is among the list’s more challenging choices: viewers seeking a gentler introduction to horror may prefer to start elsewhere.

  20. The Thing (2007, United States)

John Hillcoat’s Australian Western horror turns an outback journey into a confrontation with human violence and a landscape that offers little refuge. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2000s guide includes it among the decade’s notable horror choices. Its position here broadens the list beyond supernatural hauntings and creature features to include horror rooted in the collapse of safety and trust.

Choosing a starting point

For a first watch, match the film to the kind of horror you want rather than beginning at number one. Get Out and The Babadook offer accessible entry points through character-driven stories; Let the Right One In and The Host are strong choices for international genre cinema. For formal experimentation, try Host or Skinamarink. Inside is explicitly a confrontational home-invasion film, while Skinamarink favors sustained, unconventional atmosphere. The evidence cited here does not establish current streaming, rental, or disc availability, which varies by territory and date.

Why there is no definitive top twenty

Critics’ lists disagree because they measure different things: one may rank by an aggregator score, another select for originality or historical importance. The BFI’s decade-spanning choices and Rotten Tomatoes’ guides help identify films with critical recognition, but neither provides a single, complete ranking for 2000–2025. The 2010s candidates here are representative rather than exhaustive, and 2025 does not yet have a settled retrospective assessment in the sources used for this list.
