Netflix is still useful for documentaries, but it is not the only place to find serious nonfiction. The better alternative depends on what you watch: science and history, independent film, British factual television, true crime, nature, anime, live sports documentaries, or free ad-supported programming.
This list uses U.S. direct-billed prices and plan details from 2024. Prices, catalogs, and availability can change, and third-party billing through Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, cable providers, or libraries may differ. Several services below are not general Netflix replacements; they are specialists that may be more valuable to a documentary viewer.

For documentary viewers, the strongest starting points are CuriosityStream for science and history, Max for investigative and prestige nonfiction, MUBI for carefully selected documentary films, and Kanopy for independent and educational cinema. If the budget is zero, check Tubi, Kanopy, and Hoopla before signing up for another monthly service.
1. Amazon Prime Video
Best overall paid alternative. Standalone Prime Video cost $8.99 per month in 2024. Amazon Prime cost $14.99 per month or $139 per year and included Prime Video alongside its other membership benefits. In the U.S., Prime Video introduced limited ads in early 2024; removing them cost an additional $2.99 per month at launch.

Prime Video has a broad mixture of original documentaries, licensed films, rentals, purchases, and channel add-ons. That breadth is useful, but it creates a common source of confusion: a title visible in the Prime Video interface is not necessarily included in the subscription. Check whether the listing says included, rent, buy, or subscribe through a channel before assuming you can watch it.
2. Disney+
Best for nature, science, history, and family viewing. Disney+ cost $7.99 per month with ads or $13.99 without ads in 2024. Its documentary value comes largely from National Geographic, Disney, Pixar, and related factual programming, including nature and exploration titles that work well for family viewing.
Disney+ is not just a children’s service, but parental controls and family-friendly discovery are important parts of its appeal. Catalog availability differs by country, so a National Geographic title available in the U.S. may not appear in another region.
3. Hulu
Best for current-season television and documentary series. Hulu was $7.99 per month with ads or $17.99 without ads in 2024. It combines Hulu Originals with programming from networks such as FX and, in some cases, next-day access to current television.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Hulu is a better choice for viewers who want documentaries alongside news, scripted series, and network programming rather than a dedicated documentary library. The ad-free plan also does not make every Hulu Live TV stream commercial-free; live channels and certain programs can still contain advertising.
4. Max
Best for HBO documentaries and investigative nonfiction. Max’s 2024 U.S. plans were Basic with Ads at $9.99 per month, Standard at $15.99, and Ultimate Ad-Free at $19.99. Its documentary offering includes HBO investigations, biographies, sports documentaries, social-issue films, crime programming, and nonfiction from the wider Warner Bros. ecosystem.
Max was the service’s name in 2024; “HBO Max” was the former branding. Max is particularly strong when you want a polished documentary series with substantial reporting and production value, though its catalog also includes scripted television, films, reality programming, and children’s content.
5. Paramount+
Best for CBS, sports, and general factual programming. Paramount+ Essential cost $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year in 2024. Paramount+ with Showtime cost $11.99 per month or $119.99 per year.
The service draws on CBS, Paramount films, MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and Showtime. That can make it worthwhile for viewers who want documentaries mixed with news-related programming, sports coverage, and entertainment specials. Essential included ads and did not provide the same Showtime and local-CBS benefits as the higher tier. Showtime was integrated into Paramount+, not a separate standalone streaming service.

6. Peacock
Best for sports documentaries and NBCUniversal programming. Peacock raised its prices in July 2024. Premium became $7.99 per month, while Premium Plus became $13.99 per month. The service includes NBC, Bravo, Universal films, Peacock Originals, WWE, Premier League coverage, and other live sports.
Its documentary appeal is strongest for sports, celebrity, and network nonfiction rather than specialist documentary film. Premium Plus is described as reduced-ad, not absolutely ad-free: live sports, live channels, sponsored material, and certain programs can still contain commercials.
7. Apple TV+
Best for high-profile original documentaries. Apple TV+ cost $9.99 per month in late 2024. Its catalog was smaller than Netflix’s and centered mainly on Apple Originals, but the service invested heavily in polished documentary films and series alongside shows such as Severance, Ted Lasso, and Slow Horses.
Do not confuse the Apple TV+ subscription with the complete Apple TV app. The app also rents and sells films, but those transactions are separate from the subscription. Apple TV+ is most compelling if you prefer a smaller selection of heavily promoted originals over a huge back catalog.
8. Crunchyroll
Best for anime and animated nonfiction. Crunchyroll’s Fan tier remained $7.99 per month in 2024. After a May price increase, Mega Fan cost $11.99 and Ultimate Fan cost $15.99.
This is a genre specialist rather than a conventional Netflix replacement. It is useful for Japanese animation, anime-related cultural programming, simulcasts, and Crunchyroll Originals. The higher tiers primarily added simultaneous streams, offline viewing, and member perks; they did not simply unlock entirely separate catalogs. The transition from the Funimation service also made 2024 a period of catalog and app changeover.
9. BritBox
Best for British factual television. BritBox cost $8.99 per month or $89.99 per year in the U.S. in 2024, generally with a seven-day trial. Its programming comes primarily from the BBC, ITV, and related British providers.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For documentary viewers, BritBox is especially useful when the target is British history, nature, public affairs, travel, or long-running factual television. It should not be judged by Netflix’s scale: its value is access to a particular national television tradition. The U.S. catalog is not identical to the U.K. catalog.
10. Shudder
Best for horror documentaries. Shudder cost approximately $6.99 per month in the U.S. in 2024. The service focuses on horror, supernatural films, thrillers, cult cinema, and original programming.
Its documentary selection is narrower but more targeted than a general service’s. Expect filmmaking documentaries, true-crime material, genre history, and behind-the-scenes features aimed at horror fans. A small catalog is not necessarily a weakness here; Shudder’s value comes from concentration rather than volume.

- Fire TV Ambient Experience lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.
11. MUBI
Best for curated independent and international documentary films. MUBI cost approximately $14.99 per month or about $119.88 per year in the U.S. in 2024.

Its selection emphasizes independent, international, arthouse, and classic films, including documentaries that may be difficult to find on broad commercial platforms. Titles rotate frequently, so a film mentioned in an older recommendation may no longer be available when you subscribe.
12. AMC+
Best for AMC, SundanceTV, IFC, and related nonfiction. AMC+ was a premium bundle in 2024 covering AMC, BBC America, IFC, SundanceTV, and associated programming. Pricing varied depending on whether you subscribed directly or bought it as an add-on through Prime Video Channels, Apple TV Channels, Roku, or a cable provider.
Its documentary appeal comes from independent film, cultural programming, horror, and factual titles connected to those networks. Treat AMC+ as a bundle rather than simply “the AMC app”; the catalog and terms could differ by billing platform.
13. STARZ
Best for premium films and documentary specials. STARZ commonly advertised a $9.99-per-month direct subscription in 2024, with frequent introductory promotions.
STARZ is primarily a premium movie and original-series service, so it is not a documentary-first replacement for Netflix. It can nevertheless suit viewers who want nonfiction specials alongside premium films. Pay attention to the renewal price: an introductory promotion is not the same as the regular monthly rate.
14. CuriosityStream
Best dedicated service for science and history. CuriosityStream plans started at about $5 per month or $40 per year in 2024, while higher tiers were needed for features such as 4K, additional content, or more simultaneous streams.
This is one of the clearest choices for viewers who mainly want science, technology, history, nature, engineering, and educational documentaries. It is not a broad scripted-TV service, and the cheapest plan should not be described as providing the entire catalog in 4K. Check the tier details before subscribing if image quality matters to you.
15. Discovery+
Best for nature, true crime, history, food, and reality documentaries. Discovery+ pricing in 2024 generally ranged from about $4.99 per month with ads to $8.99 without ads, depending on the plan and promotion.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
The service brings together Discovery, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, and related factual programming. It is particularly strong in true crime, home, food, nature, and reality formats. Because Max also carried some Discovery programming, compare the specific titles you want on both services before paying for Discovery+ separately.
16. Tubi
Best free on-demand alternative. Tubi is free, requires no subscription or credit card, and is supported by advertising. It offers thousands of movies and television programs, including a changing selection of documentaries.
Tubi is closer to a free, ad-supported video library than a premium curated service. Its catalog changes as licensing agreements expire and new titles arrive. It is available through the web, mobile devices, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and selected smart TVs.
17. Pluto TV
Best free live-TV-style experience. Pluto TV is free and ad-supported, combining live channels with on-demand programming. Its appeal is channel surfing: viewers can move through themed channels covering news, movies, classic shows, reality programming, and factual content.
Recommended Free Tools
Pluto TV does not primarily behave like Netflix. If you want to search for one specific documentary and start it immediately, an on-demand service may be less frustrating. If you enjoy discovering programs through a schedule and watching a channel in the background, Pluto is a better fit. Availability varies by country.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.18. The Roku Channel
Best free Roku-centered option. The Roku Channel offers free ad-supported movies, television programs, Roku Originals, and live channels. Roku advertised more than 350 live TV channels in 2024.
You do not necessarily need a Roku device: the service was also available through its website and mobile app, although the interface and catalog could differ by device. On Roku hardware, free programming could be found through paths such as Home → Free or Featured Free. It is a useful single starting point for free documentaries and live factual channels, but it is not one uniform on-demand catalog.
19. Kanopy
Best free option for independent and educational film. Kanopy is free through participating public libraries, colleges, and universities. Your institution determines whether it offers Kanopy and how many monthly viewing tickets or plays you receive.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Kanopy is often more valuable to documentary viewers than a typical free streaming app because its selection emphasizes independent cinema, documentaries, classics, and educational material. A library card alone does not guarantee access: the specific library must participate, and usage limits vary.

20. Hoopla
Best library option for mixed media. Hoopla is free with a participating library card and includes movies, television, audiobooks, e-books, comics, and music.
Documentaries are borrowed like digital library materials rather than kept permanently in a subscription catalog. Loan periods, title availability, and monthly borrowing limits depend on the library. Many titles can be downloaded to supported mobile devices, but features are not identical for every title or device.
How to choose the right Netflix alternative
- Start with your documentary subject. Choose CuriosityStream for science and history, Discovery+ for reality-led factual programming, BritBox for British television, MUBI for independent cinema, and Shudder for horror.
- Check free access first. Search Tubi, Kanopy, Hoopla, Pluto TV, and The Roku Channel before adding another paid subscription.
- Verify that the title is included. Prime Video and the Apple TV app mix subscription titles with rentals and purchases. A search result does not automatically mean free access.
- Check the ad wording. “Ad-free” or “Premium Plus” can still allow commercials in live sports, live channels, sponsored programs, or other exceptions.
- Compare the exact catalog in your country. Streaming rights are regional and change regularly. A recommendation from a U.S. list may not apply elsewhere.
- Cancel after the event or series ends. Documentary catalogs rotate, and a specialist service can be excellent for one month without being worth keeping year-round.
Outdated alternatives to avoid listing as current
Freevee should not be treated as a current standalone recommendation. Amazon announced in November 2024 that it was sunsetting the Freevee service and integrating its free content into Prime Video. Likewise, Peacock’s old $4.99 or $5.99 prices were outdated after its July 2024 increase, and “HBO Max” was no longer the product name in 2024.
FAQ
What is the best Netflix alternative for documentaries?
For a documentary-first subscription, CuriosityStream is the clearest choice for science, history, technology, and nature. Max is stronger for investigative and prestige nonfiction, MUBI for independent documentary films, and Kanopy for free library-based access.
What is the best free Netflix alternative in 2024?
Tubi is the strongest free on-demand option, while Pluto TV is better for live channels. Kanopy and Hoopla can be better for independent and educational documentaries if your public library or university participates.
Does Amazon Prime Video include every title shown in its app?
No. Prime Video combines subscription-included programs with rentals, purchases, and channel add-ons. Check the title page for the payment method before assuming it is included.
Are Netflix alternatives available in every country?
No. Catalogs, plans, prices, and even service availability vary by country because streaming rights are regional. Confirm the service’s local catalog and current price before subscribing.
The Bottom Line
There is no single Netflix replacement that is best for every documentary viewer. CuriosityStream is the most focused paid choice for science and history; Max is stronger for investigative and prestige nonfiction; MUBI suits independent-film audiences; and Kanopy is often the best free option when a library provides access. For a zero-cost starting point, combine Tubi for on-demand viewing with Pluto TV or The Roku Channel for live channels.
Use the prices above as a 2024 snapshot, not a promise of current pricing. Streaming services change plans, rename products, remove titles, and adjust regional catalogs regularly.
